Surprises? There are none, but bring your Tempo. Not a packet, but a carton.
This latest script writing and directing effort by Raymond To starring Sylvia Chang, Josie Ho and Chris Lee and a handful of lesser famed artists is (in an overused cliche?) worth seeing. Although Chang's behind the scene contribution is less apparent, her signature is everywhere.
What is going to happen is let known in the start of the film, so the audience have had no chance to hope for a miracle. Some may consider it to be a waste of time seeing the film if the ending is declared in the beginning, but it is because of this very reason that the audience can devote their concentration in admiring the outstanding acting by the three lead artists.
The film nutured 2 concurrent story lines. In one line, Chang's son, played by Lee, was diagnosed with haemophilia at infancy. While the mother and son had fought in his entire life in ensuring a healthy and safeliving environment, the tragedy doubled by having Lee contracting the HIV virus during a blood transfusion. In the other line, we have Ho, who had been diagnosed also with HIV a few years after Lee's death. Chang tried to draw on her experience with her son to help Ho come to the end of her life. Since both story lines are at different time frames, the audience is led back and forth between the past and the present. To's efforts are to be commended as the switch is clean and unambiguous.
The focus of the film is seen in Lee's attitude towards his illness and how he had dealt with his relationship with his mother, and how the mother dealt with the eventual loss of the son. The cheerfulness of Lee (apart from moments of melancholy and hopelessness) magnified the tragedy because it increased the contrast between happiness and sadness. Lee had never lost hope. The acceptance by the readers towards his book was a miracle in his miracleless life. His final departure was not unaccounted for: he taught his mother and everyone how to live stronger. Chang would recall her moments of worry, devastation, frustration, and disappointment even after Lee's death, but yet she became. The strength she had found in her son's book also helped Ho live stronger. This is the miracle.
It is not easy to explain why the film is sentimental or tear drawing. There is nothing that forced your tears. It is rather the deep emotional concentration of the artists that did the magic. There is no reservation regarding Chang's performance, as she has kept a high standard in her films. Lee's acting is extremly clean and fresh while Ho has displayed her best effort and skills since she began the acting career.
If your heart is not as hard as a rock, you will be moved. Gentlemen, don't worry about letting people know you have cried, it is worth it. And don't forget to call your mum.
