英 國 密 探 " 眼 睛 " （ 伊 雲 麥 葵 格 飾 演 ） 奉 命 追 查 涉 嫌 勒 索 一 政 府 高 官 之 子 的 女 子 祖 安 娜 艾 莉 絲 （ 艾 絲 莉 茱 迪 飾 演 ） 。 在 追 蹤 過 程 中 ， 因 艾 莉 絲 的 美 貌 及 艾 莉 絲 與 其 失 蹤 已 久 女 兒 極 之 相 近 的 背 景 關 係 ， " 眼 睛 " 被 迷 倒 之 餘 還 產 生 憐 愛 之 心 。 縱 使 " 眼 睛 " 一 一 目 睹 艾 莉 絲 的 暴 行 ， 但 亦 只 一 直 繼 續 監 視 及 追 蹤 她 的 去 向 ， 沒 有 將 她 逮 捕 。 最 後 ， 他 們 在 最 後 目 的 地 " 世 界 之 盡 頭 " 相 遇 ， 一 起 面 對 命 運 的 安 排 ……

此 片 是 澳 洲 作 家 兼 導 演 史 提 芬 伊 利 安 繼 其 出 名 的 " 風 塵 三 絕 " 之 後 第 四 套 電 影 。 這 次 找 到 " 星 戰 前 傳 之 魅 影 危 機 " 的 伊 雲 麥 葵 格 ， " 盜 火 線 " 的 艾 絲 莉 茱 迪 ， 電 視 連 續 劇 " 90210 " 的 Jason Priestly 及 歌 手 k. d. lang 等 人 主 演 。

自 99 年 的 亡 命 追 凶 後 ， 艾 絲 莉 茱 迪 久 久 未 有 新 戲 。 這 次 她 飾 演 的 角 色 頗 為 複 雜 ， 她 既 是 一 美 麗 孤 兒 但 又 是 凶 殘 的 勒 索 者 ， 而 且 亦 是 一 位 偽 裝 專 家 。 故 此 ， 在 戲 中 大 家 可 欣 賞 到 她 千 變 萬 化 的 造 型 。 喜 歡 艾 絲 莉 茱 迪 的 影 迷 實 不 容 錯 過 。 對 向 這 高 難 度 挑 戰 的 艾 絲 莉 茱 迪 而 言 ， 她 在 此 片 中 的 演 出 已 達 到 了 導 演 所 要 求 的 了 。

基 於 伊 雲 麥 葵 格 在 此 片 飾 演 一 位 沈 默 的 監 視 者 ， 他 的 對 白 相 對 較 少 ， 而 側 重 內 心 戲 。 這 與 伊 雲 麥 葵 格 以 往 常 飾 演 活 潑 多 言 的 角 色 有 極 大 分 別 。 對 他 來 說 可 說 是 一 個 新 嘗 試 。 但 因 導 演 史 提 芬 伊 利 安 欠 缺 功 力 ， 令 " 眼 睛 " 的 性 格 較 為 模 糊 及 毫 無 目 標 。 伊 雲 麥 葵 格 並 未 能 藉 此 機 會 而 成 功 轉 型 。

導 演 史 提 芬 伊 利 安 雖 塑 造 了 祖 安 娜 這 殘 暴 殺 手 的 角 色 ， 但 他 想 觀 眾 同 情 及 憐 憫 祖 安 娜 ， 因 而 在 片 中 安 排 祖 安 娜 由 片 首 的 兇 殘 無 良 漸 變 為 片 末 的 軟 弱 溫 和 。 過 程 自 然 ， 導 演 這 點 可 算 是 成 功 了 。

此 外 ， 史 提 芬 伊 利 安 刻 意 用 迷 幻 的 表 達 方 法 去 拍 攝 此 片 ， 但 當 中 又 加 入 了 暴 力 元 素 。 縱 使 暴 力 與 迷 幻 是 風 牛 馬 不 相 及 的 東 西 ， 導 演 將 之 融 合 為 一 但 又 能 令 觀 眾 不 覺 突 兀 ， 這 亦 是 此 片 的 一 大 特 色 。

不 過 ， 此 片 雖 是 一 套 驚 慄 片 ， 但 故 事 線 薄 弱 ， " 眼 睛 " 的 動 機 雖 明 顯 但 欠 缺 說 服 力 。 可 能 導 演 實 在 想 表 達 太 多 東 西 ， 這 反 而 令 此 片 沒 有 其 明 顯 的 著 眼 處 。 其 實 ， 若 功 力 不 夠 ， 執 導 時 只 專 注 某 一 兩 項 元 素 ， 這 反 倒 容 易 使 之 成 為 經 典 。

McGregor, playing a British intelligence agent The Eye, was assigned to put surveillance on a blackmailer Joanna Eris, played by the beautiful Ashley Judd, of a British Official's son. In the process of tailing Eris, The Eye witnessed more deaths in the hands of the murderess. Instead of arranging for an arrest, The Eye became obsessive with Eris and continued to follow and watch her roaming across the country. To The Eye, an arrest meant he would lose her forever. In the end, they met in the final destination -- the end of the world -- where they would face their destiny.

Here is Stephan Elliot, the Australian writer and director for the famous "The Adventure of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" back in 1994 making his 4th picture using the talented Ewan McGregor and Ashley Judd as his main characters. The support artists include 90210 idol Jason Priestly, singer k.d. lang and Genevieve Bujold.

The Eye's obsession was clear but not convincing. Apart from captured by her beauty, The Eye saw something in Eris that resembled his lost daughter, of which he was torturing himself everyday for the loss due to his job nature. His wanting to watch over Eris became so obsessive that he began to get closer physically to her life. Eris, on the other hand, was an orphan and a victim of some tragic event that was not fully explained. Eris gradually felt that she was being watched over by some guardian angel as she was "helped" out of trouble. Finally the 2 hurt soul met and a fantasy turned into a tragedy.

Since the Phantom Menace, Episode 1 of the Star Wars series, where Ewan McGregory played the young apprentice Obi-Wan, McGregor had only played in 2 films, Nora and Moulin Rouge, neither of them had been shown in Hong Kong. In this film, McGregor has been cast as the silent watcher, so his lines are few. This is new for McGregor given almost all of his previous roles were more flamboyant and active. However, the director has not been effective enough to draw McGregor's magic into the role. As a result, The Eye became an obsessive yet aimless and vague character.

We have not seen Ashley Judd since her 1999 film Double Jeopardy opposite Tommy Lee Jones. In this film, she plays the vicious and merciless murderess Eris. However, as though the director wanted the audience to sympathize and accept her, Eris has been made milder and weaker as the film progresses. For this gradual and convincing change the director was quite successful. In this aspect Judd had demonstrated effectively what the director had wanted.

Another point worth mentioning is the director's artistic use of imagery in each scene. The result is the whole film is mesmerising and enigmatic. For the audience it felt like a dream, from one scene to another. The success in here is perhaps the ability to blend violence into the dream without making the audience feel awkward of 2 extreme worlds.

The story line is weak, albeit a thriller. This is certainly an example of a director wanting to do too much in a film that in the end no aspects became substantial enough to be a classic. It is obvious what Elliot wanted but somehow he just could not reach it. It is annoying because only if he had aimed fewer, this could have been a good film.
