Based on an RPG (which was a board game more than 15 years ago), Dungeons and Dragons is a better one of its kind.

Profion (Jeremy Irons) wanted to control the Golden Dragons so that he can steal the throne of Izmer from the very young Empress Savina (Thora Birch). But the Empress had the scepter that controls the dragons, thus stalling Profion's plan. Meanwhile two small time thieves Ridley (Justin Whalin) and Snails (Marlon Wayans) were robbing the magic school. At the same time, Damodar (Bruce Payne), Profion's general, was there killing the Empress's advisor, and his student Marina (Zoe McLellan) joined Ridley and Snails to flee from the threat of Damodar. To free the commoners of Izmer, the group searched for the Rod of Savrille, which controls the Red Dragons. Eventually, the Rod fell into the hand of Damodar, which was then in the hands of Profion. So, the war between the Golden Dragons and Red Dragons began.

Unlike other films based on a game, the storyline of D&D is complicated and reasonable enough and the language is simple enough to please both the D&D fans and the non-D&D players. It is not just a film trying to exploit the popularity of the game without presenting a good product to the audience. The film was well above my expectations, considering it is a film of its type. Visual effects are plenty. Some computer-generated scenes were quite fake. The images of the extremely tall and thin building (which are structurally impossible to build in real life) make you feel you are watching a cartoon, and the unsmooth and overly smooth movements of the dragons may make you think the film was made in the early nineties. However, that kind of enhances the feel of the film, considering that the setting is kind of a "legend". In any case, I think the special effects are a bit overused.

All in all, if you think all films based on popular games suck, this film is going to change your mind. I give this film a "good" rating.
