To get things straight, this film is not "Chocolate" (CHOK-o-lit). It is "Chocolat" (shok-o-LA). The word is French and the whole story happened in France.

The North Wind brought Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche) and her daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol) to the peaceful village of Lansquenet. She opened a chocolaterie near the office of the mayor Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina). Everything in the village was so old-fashioned that Vianne soon became an outcast, although she managed to win the trust of a few villagers with her confection. The mayor, who was almost the most old-fashioned in the village, especially dislikes Vianne because he thought she was going to destroy the serenity of the village. One day, a riverboat of travelers, including Roux (Johnny Depp), came to the riverbank near Lansquenet and stayed in the village. Being regarded as lower class people, they were rejected by many villagers. Vianne dared to befriend with them and that invoked more troubles for her. In the end, she was accepted by the village, and she decided to stay in there.

The story is like Pleasantville, or Beautician and the Beast, Footloose, or even The Sound of Music, where an outsider comes into a new place and changed the old-fashion culture there. And of course, in every case, the newcomer always changes the town. The story is not the most drawing part of the film. Perhaps it was the acting of Juliette Binoche, a Frenchwoman herself, that makes the film special.

Juliette Binoche's performance is exceptional in the film. Her acting was so natural in the film that it made her look like she was really Vianne, not an actress. No wonder she got nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role in Oscar. Judi Dench, also an Oscar nominee for her role as Armande Voizin, was also very good in portraying the old woman who failed to maintain a good relationship with her daughter Caroline (Carrie-Anne Moss). Johnny Depp, although played pretty well in his role as the riverboat wanderer Roux, was outshone by Juliette Binoche.

Although the producers tried very hard to make the everything look French, including having French titles for the people used in the speeches (e.g. Madame), the pronunciation of the names French, and the words written on the windows of the bar and other shops French, it stunned me when I saw a public notice posted and it was written in English. Like I said, all names were pronounced French, but the name "Paul" (which sound like "ball" in French) was pronounced totally English. It is always this kind of tiny little speckles that ruins the perfection of a good film.

On the whole, Chocolat is a good one, and is probably one of the best shown in March in Hong Kong. With 5 nomination in Oscar (and numerous other nominations), you almost can't go wrong to watch it.

帶 著 女 兒 隨 處 流 浪 的 美 麗 寡 婦 慧 安 （ 茱 麗 葉 庇 洛 仙 飾 演 ） ， 來 到 一 個 寧 靜 、 保 守 、 安 於 現 狀 的 小 鎮 朗 斯 納 鎮 ， 開 了 一 間 朱 古 力 專 門 店 。 她 所 烹 調 的 朱 古 力 深 深 吸 引 鎮 上 居 民 ， 唯 鎮 上 握 權 派 雷 伯 爵 （ 艾 佛 莫 連 拿 飾 演 ） 認 為 她 在 破 壞 鎮 上 的 安 寧 與 百 多 年 的 傳 統 習 俗 （ 因 鎮 上 居 民 在 守 齋 期 亦 品 嚐 朱 古 力 ） ， 處 處 予 以 針 對 ； 此 時 ， 浪 人 陸 克 （ 尊 尼 特 普 ） 亦 來 到 鎮 上 ， 基 於 志 趣 相 投 ， 逐 一 起 對 抗 雷 伯 爵 ， 幾 經 辛 苦 之 下 ， 慧 安 的 朱 古 力 亦 將 雷 伯 爵 冷 冷 的 心 溶 掉 。

導 演 萊 塞 荷 斯 朗 以 往 拍 的 " 狗 臉 的 歲 月 " 、 " 不 一 樣 的 天 空 " 及 " 總 有 驕 陽 " 都 是 一 些 溫 馨 感 人 的 電 影 。 這 次 執 導 情 迷 朱 古 力 ， 除 充 滿 感 性 外 ， 亦 加 入 了 喜 劇 元 素 ， 令 人 看 得 開 懷 。 此 片 對 多 位 角 色 均 有 深 刻 描 述 ， 並 不 只 集 中 在 一 兩 個 演 員 身 上 ， 筆 者 欣 賞 導 演 能 在 兩 小 時 內 讓 觀 眾 對 多 位 角 色 都 有 一 定 程 度 上 的 了 解 ， 又 再 一 次 顯 示 其 善 於 描 述 人 物 的 才 華 。

演 員 方 面 ， 茱 麗 葉 庇 洛 仙 飾 演 一 位 到 處 飄 泊 的 美 艷 寡 婦 ， 憑 她 的 獨 特 氣 質 與 美 貌 ， 外 觀 已 極 為 適 合 ， 再 加 上 茱 麗 葉 懂 得 做 戲 的 眼 神 ， 觀 眾 已 像 她 在 戲 中 所 做 的 朱 古 力 般 被 她 迷 住 了 。 尊 尼 特 普 在 此 片 中 其 實 佔 戲 不 多 ， 但 以 其 俊 朗 面 孔 來 扮 演 一 個 浪 蕩 不 羈 的 人 物 ， 則 缺 少 了 一 份 粗 獷 感 覺 。 至 於 蘭 娜 奧 蓮 所 飾 演 的 被 丈 夫 虐 待 婦 人 ， 在 面 對 丈 夫 時 ， 表 情 過 於 平 淡 ； 筆 者 認 為 她 應 該 加 添 驚 恐 表 情 ， 這 才 切 合 受 虐 者 的 心 態 。 此 片 最 搶 戲 的 ， 要 算 是 艾 佛 莫 連 拿 所 飾 演 的 雷 伯 爵 ， 他 既 可 演 出 了 伯 爵 的 威 嚴 ， 但 在 伯 爵 不 知 所 措 時 ， 單 看 其 兩 顆 大 大 的 眼 睛 ， 已 可 令 觀 眾 捧 腹 大 笑 。 其 亦 正 亦 邪 ， 既 可 莊 嚴 又 可 攪 笑 的 可 塑 性 ， 筆 者 認 為 他 是 一 位 不 可 多 得 的 演 員 。 期 望 他 可 再 帶 給 觀 眾 新 驚 喜 。

故 事 方 面 ， 此 劇 以 朱 古 力 這 種 美 味 食 品 作 為 調 解 人 與 人 之 間 的 種 種 誤 會 與 隔 膜 ， 題 材 新 穎 。 戲 中 描 述 每 個 朗 斯 納 鎮 的 鄉 民 也 被 慧 安 的 朱 古 力 所 迷 倒 則 略 嫌 誇 張 。 此 外 ， 筆 者 預 期 可 看 到 慧 安 在 廚 房 烹 調 朱 古 力 的 秘 技 ， 但 看 到 的 只 是 她 用 棒 子 攪 拌 濃 濃 的 朱 古 力 熱 漿 ， 有 點 兒 失 望 。

戲 中 有 一 幕 朱 古 力 宴 會 ， 當 畫 面 出 現 演 員 將 朱 古 力 漿 淋 在 雞 ， 牛 排 等 主 菜 上 時 ， 戲 院 內 不 少 人 在 嘩 然 ， 或 許 大 家 都 沒 有 像 朗 斯 納 鎮 上 居 民 那 樣 " 情 迷 朱 古 力 " 吧 ！
