Cruella De Vil (Glenn Close) was released from jail for probation after her treatment for suppressing her cruelty towards dogs. She now preferred to be called Ella instead of Cruella with her love towards canine. However, her treatment was not perfect, because subjects with her treatment would turn back to their original states when they hear things like the banging of the Big Ben. And, she heard it. She now wanted to complete her dalmation coat project, only that now she needed 102 dalmations instead of 101 because she changed the orginal design which now needed an extra dalmation to make a hat. Is she going to succeed?
In the preview show that I went to, half of the audience was kids. Well, this film is a kids' film. Perhaps I am too old for this film, I did not find the film exciting. But the kids should be the best judges in this case. I heard their laughter from time to time. So, I believe other kids would love it.
Since I believe kids are not going to read my review, let me spend more time to talk about something that would tickle the accompanying adults.
This film is well made. Visual effect is so good I almost did not remember that some dalmations were digitally created. Glenn Close, of course, did a very good job in conveying the evilness of Cruella to the audience.
The film seems to suggest that people don't change. In the film, Chloe did not believe that Cruella has changed after Cruella went to jail. It seems to be not a good idea to let the kids think that all people never change. Does it mean that if a kid has made a mistake then s/he does not have to change because s/he would not be able to change and the people around him/her will never believe that s/he can change? This may be something the parents need to talk to their kids after watching it.
The version that I watched was the Cantonese dubbed version. I realized that some scenes are missing from the original version, such as Cruella trying to prove herself fit for probation by showing her love towards dogs in the court. I believe the English version should have that part. If you want to watch an uncut version, perhaps you have to choose the English version.
All in all, it is a fun film for the kids and I suggest parents to choose this film over the others if they are to take their kids to watch a film during the Chinese New Year holiday.
