After the Cultural Revolution, millions of educated teenagers went sent to rural areas to develop the sparsely populated areas. Many of them did not come back. This film portrays the story of some of the unlucky teens who had to betray themselves to get back their freedom.

Xiu Xiu (Lu Lu) lived in Chengdu. She was sent-down, like other educated teens, to work in Tibet in a flour factory. She was picked to learn to raise horses in the the plateau from her Tibetian mentor -- Jin (Lopsang). She was supposed to be there for six months, but she was never received by the officials after the period. She was then lured by a young official who suggested she was attracted to him. They had sex. Xiu Xiu was hoping that he would come back. He never did. Afterwards, she slept was a number of officials, hoping that with the sexual favors, she could be sent back to Chengdu. Different officials kept coming, but she was still there. Then she got pregnant. She learned in the hospital that she could be sent home if she was disabled, such as losing a toe. She tried to dismember a toe of hers with a rifle, but she could not do it without the help of Jin. Jin, instead of pointing the rifle to her foot, pointed the rifle at her body. Xiu Xiu did not stop him, but tidied up herself and waited for her death. She was killed, and Jin killed himself, too.

The film is surely a film more than a commercial one. It potrays well how corrupt officials of China at that time were. The story also brings up the question about values of life. What is more important? Chastity? Freedom? Life? Clearly, there is a difference in choice by the two main characters. Xiu Xiu thought that freedom is most important, and so she tried to use sex to exchange for her freedom. Jin did not agree. He valued chastity more, and so he chose to kill her instead of letting her lead a life that is so impure. Perhaps Xiu Xiu was not sure, and that was why she did not struggle when Jin was trying to kill her. It was not an easy choice for her, or for anybody who was in her position, like other sent-down educated teenagers...

At the beginning of the film, the pace was a bit slow, making it a bit boring. However, after watching the whole film, I actually think that it was paced right to contrast against the peiod when the pace was more intense where Xiu Xiu was not the innocent girl any more. It was a sad story, and the director has conveyed the sadness effectively into the heart of every person who sees the film. A tremendous effort by Joan Chen. Lu Lu has earned herself two awards in this film. With her acting in this film, she deserve any award. Lopsang also had very good performance in the film, and earned himself one award. Two fine actors for this great film.
