Billy Brown (Vincent Gallo), born in 1966 in Buffalo, betted $10,000 on the Buffalo Team in the Super Bowl final. In the decisive field goal kick, the kicker, Scott Woods (Bob Wahl), missed. The Buffalo Team lost. Billy had no money to pay the bookie and had to go to jail for somebody else's crime to serve as a payment for his debt. 5 years later, he was discharged. He planned to visit his parents, kill Scott Woods, and then kill himself. He told his parent that he worked in the government before he went into jail, and that he was now married. Billy, having no wife to show his parents, kidnapped Layla (Christina Ricci), and asked her to help him by pretending to be his wife. During that day, Layla began to like Billy, but Billy was leaving her to kill Scott...
The film is not a big budget film, and clearly it is not the commercial type. There is very limited visual effect. However, it does not mean that it is not good. In fact, in some major US film web sites, Buffalo '66 receives very high ratings. The way that Vincent Gallo handled the film is interesting. For example, at the table where the Browns and Layla sat, Gallo used 4 different angles to shoot. Also, Layla's dance, the instant photo shooting... The effect is quite interesting. You can smell art from it. (Don't get me wrong, Ricci did not dance well...)
The plot makes me feel that Billy would definitely kill Scott. In the end, the film tries to enlighten the audience by revealing that hatred often blinds us and makes us think our lives are worthless, but actually we could be having a lot that we should cherish. Also, it tells us that we often blame others instead asking ourselves what we have done to get ourselves into the mess we are in. Is Scott to be blamed for Billy getting into jail? Or is Billy's own silliness to blame? Why should Billy kill Scott? All these questions are answered in the end.
