Elliot Richards (Brandon Fraser) was an unpopular person in his company. He had a crush on Alison Gardner (Frances O'Connor) who was in the same company as his for 4 years. However, Alison did not even recognize him. He liked Alison so much that he would do anything to win her heart. The Devil (Elizabeth Hurley) offered Elliot 7 wishes. In return, he had to surrender his soul to the Devil after his 7th wish was realized. Realizing that he could use his wishes to win Alison's heart, he accepted the offer. In the first six wishes, no matter what he wished for, he got something that sounded like what he wanted but were totally something that he did not want. He had been a drug dealer, the most sensitive man in the world, the best professional basketball player, the most eloquent man, the American President (as in Lincoln). All sounded too good but it never turned out to be. At last, he used his last wish to hope the best for Alison. Because of his unselfish wish, he did not have to surrender his soul.
The film is entertaining. However, the story is too simple and too predictable. And once the first (or second) wish was twisted, the whole audience basically knows all the following wishes would be twisted, too. More demanding viewers may find the film boring. The film tries to convey 2 values. One is that a lot of people trade their souls for the things they want, which is not "right" and that we do not own our souls but god. The other is that heaven and hell are both present on earth, so it is up to us to choose to live good or live bad. In conveying these messages, I feel that the film is too hard-selling. After his made his 6th wish, Elliot was thrown into jail. There, he met a black guy who preached to him the first value discussed above. And after he made his 7th wish, the Devil preached to him again, this time the second value. The preaching makes the whole film too odd for a comedy.
In the 21st episode of the 7th season of the X-Files, "Je Souhaite", a similar theme was used. In this episode, some people were given 3 wishes by a jinniyah. Like in this film, the person who made a wish always got something different than the original intent. The common theme of these film and episode is that people do not know exactly what they want, which is pretty true in real life. Also, when we wish for something, we often forget that we have some other more important things in life than what we wish for.
The make up and visual effect is quite impressive. The sensitive Elliot and the basketball player Elliot are particularly interesting. Elizabeth Hurley is very attractive in the film with her enormous amount of different costumes in the film. Girls may find their boyfriends' hearts pounding when they watch Elizabeth just walking around in the film.
All in all, if you are looking for some laughs, you will get it from the film, but this film is not going to be a film that you will remember half a year from now.
