差 Bad

The story is about the discovery of the American continent. It tries to convey historic fact of the journeys of Columbus (Gerard Depardieu) and his crew to the New World. It could have been a good film. However, the editing was horrible. Perhaps the poor editing is due to the publisher's need to condense the whole film onto 2 discs. Some part of the film is missing as a result. This makes it very difficult to understand the story.

良 Good

Gerard Depardieu (Columbus) is a not-so-famous actor. His acting is good enough in this film, but his look makes him difficult to be a big star. Sigourney Weaver (Queen Isabel) does not have a lot of chance to show her talent, but in her limited appearance in the film, she has done a good job.

The obvious fault of the production is that the sequence of the 2 discs are reversed. This is not a forgivable mistake.

The video quality is also poor. The original must have come from dubbed films. Also, both contrast and brightness of your TV need a lot of adjustment in order to get an acceptable video quality. Chinese sub-titles are also hard to read.

Like I said above, this could have been a good film. However, poor editing and poor video quality ruined the whole thing. I think it is not worth to spend even $35 to watch the VCD set (although its VHS version could be a different story).
