故事概要
《生日快樂》故事改編自劉若英的最新作品《我想跟你走》其中一篇短篇小說《Happy Birthday》，故事中的小米（劉若英飾）都坐立不安的等待著一封風雨不改的電郵，一封從小南（古天樂飾），一個她從來無法忘記的人寄來的生日電郵。一年一次的連繫，讓彼此知道對方的關心，然而他們之間藏著一個秘密……守護著彼此也傷害了彼此……
這次，滂沱大雨之下，這封電郵遲了42個小時。

也許，現在…
每年的生日，小米（劉若英飾）都坐立不安的等待著一封風雨不改的電郵，一封從小南（古天樂飾），一個她從來無法忘記的人寄來的生日電郵。這次，滂沱大雨之下，這封電郵遲了42個小時。
小米與小南被大學同學公認為會是最早結婚的一對。小米是個從沒安全感的女孩，因為害怕失去，那夜她竟在小南懷中要求只作比好朋友好的朋友；小南是個受歡迎的男孩，他一心愛著小米，然而他從不能搞懂小米的想法。
他們就像是兩種奇怪的生物，如此的相互需要、相互吸引，卻又是如此的不能共存。小南往外國升學後，二人分手了，卻仍然保持著相互取暖、比好朋友好的朋友關係。無論小米和小南身邊出現多少情人、無論小米怎麼口口聲聲的說她不會嫁給小南，身旁朋友都深深感到，小米只愛小南，小南也只愛小米，總有一天他們會名正言順的走在一起。
然而畢竟，他們盼望的都沒有來臨，一天，小南竟說自己將要結婚。小米這才醒覺，這一次，她是真真正正的失去小南。唯有……
每一年，小米都會收到小南的一個生日電郵，一年一次的連繫，讓彼此知道對方的關心，然而他們之間藏著一個秘密……守護著彼此也傷害了彼此……

Adapted from Rene Liu's short story "Happy Birthday"…
Since then, a date is changed forever. Perhaps, now…
Every year on her birthday XIAOMI (played by Rene Liu) will wait impatiently for an email that arrive punctually no matter what from someone she would never forget; XIAONAN (played by Louis Koo). However on this day with pouring rain, the email arrives 42 hours late.
All their university schoolmates think they are the first couple to get married. However XIAOMI is a girl severely lacking security and freaked out by the idea of loss. So on that fateful night in XIAONAN'S embrace, she merely asked him to be her very best friend. XIAONAN could not figure out what was on her mind. He might be the most popular guy in the campus, but he loves XIAOMI devotedly.
The two of them are such peculiar beings; despite mutually attracted to and in need of one another, they never really get together. After XIAONAN went abroad for further studies, they broke up. And yet they still maintained an interdependent relationship of best friends. Numerous lovers came along. XIAOMI repeatedly declared she would never marry XIAONAN. Nonetheless, everybody still believes that they are deeply in love with each other and one day they will finally get together.
To everybody's disappointment, this day never comes. Instead XIAONAN announces he is going to get married one day. It suddenly dawns on XIAOMI that she is really going to lose XIAONAN once and for all. In the last resort, she…
Every year, XIAOMI will receive a birthday email from XIAONAN. This annual connection keeps the two together. And yet between them there lies a secret; they are safeguarding one another while hurting one another as well.
