SYNOPSIS

THE GO MASTER, the long-anticipated new film by acclaimed 5th Generation Chinese director Tian Zhuangzhuang (Horse Thief, The Blue Kite, Springtime in a Small Town), is based on the true-to-life story of the world's most renowned master of the ancient game of Go, Wu Qingyuan. Go, a table game requiring intense stamina, energy, emotions, strategy and intellect from its players, was developed in ancient China but found a new home in post-Meiji Japan, where its adherents treated its rules and regulations in a fashion far stricter and more disciplined than that of its Chinese roots.

Wu, a native of China, emerged as a prodigy who, at a young age, moved to Japan and rose to prominence as the top Go player in the world. In Japan, Wu overturned the established traditions and strategies of this ancient game, earning multitudes of fans and enemies along the way. Set against the backdrop of the tumultuous Sino-Japanese history of the 20th century, he remained in Japan in spite of the politics and continued his passion for the game. Wu never returned to live in China again, making him a controversial figure in both countries. Now well into his 90s, he continues to reside in Japan playing Go, writing strategy books and living the life of THE GO MASTER.

With a multinational cast that includes Taiwan's Chang Chen as Wu (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Eros, Happy Together), Sylvia Chang (Eat Drink Man Woman, 20:30:40), Xin Baiqing (Springtime in a Small Town), Keiko Matsuzaka (Fall Guy, Dr. Akagi), Akira Emoto (The Eel, Dr. Akagi) and Ayumi Itou (Swallowtail Butterfly, Hana and Alice), the film employs the talents of cinematographer Wang Yu (Suzhou River, Delamu, Purple Butterfly) and Oscar-winning production and costume designer Emi Wada (Ran, Dreams, Hero, House of Flying Daggers).

TIAN ZHUANGZHUANG
Director of The Go Master

"Tian Zhuangzhuang is one of the most prominent filmmakers of China's Fifth Generation, along with Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige." - Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

"one of the best and brightest of the Fifth Generation of mainland Chinese filmmakers" - Scott Foundas, LA Weekly

"one of my favorite living Chinese filmmakers… That Tian can finally work again is a blessing" - Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

"Tian's movie seems to be among the finest expressions of the Chinese new wave." - J. Hoberman, Village Voice

Awards and Acclaim:

Horse Thief (1986)

"The Best Film of the Decade." - Martin Scorsese

#1 film of 1987. "a breathtaking spectacle in 'Scope and color, perhaps the most personal of all the "Fifth Generation" Beijing films to have emerged from the People's Republic of China. Tian's originality and mastery of sound and image communicate directly…expressing an environmental and ecological mysticism that suggests a new relationship between man and nature. Tian had said that he made this for the 21st century, yet even today it's a film of the future." - Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

"... At once a corrective to Han-chauvinist representations of national minorities and an affront to the stylistic conventions of the traditional Chinese cinema ... Horse Thief is the movie that should put the new Chinese cinema on the world map." - J. Hoberman, Village Voice

"An intoxicating masterpiece, and the very best film to come from China's Fifth Generation." - Jeffrey M. Anderson, San Francisco Examiner

Li Lianying, the Imperial Eunuch (1991)

Awards:

Special Mention, Berlin International Film Festival Competition

The Blue Kite (1993)

Awards:

Springtime in a Small Town (2002)

Awards:

"One of the best films of the year." - Richard Corliss, Time

"For Tian, who was banned from directing by Chinese authorities for a decade, it marks a triumphant return; for those who have loved the filmmaker's work in the past, few resurrections have seemed as welcome." - Manohla Dargis, Los Angeles Times

5/5 "What a wonderful movie this is. It is the kind of deeply intelligent, humane cinema with heart and sinew, and it dwarfs everything else around." - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian UK

"it came as no surprise that the director of Horse Thief and The Blue Kite made such a strong film, but the novelty was its delicacy and exquisite aestheticism." - Phillip Lopate, Film Comment
