鄱陽湖的內島湖光山色，候鳥飛舞，是一個遠離都市的地方，但是因為交通不便，生活條件十分艱苦。一天，一個上海姑娘顧曉霖來到鄱陽湖小島，她說來拜訪一位女知青，在這裏教了一輩子書的劉老師。實際上她是來憑弔大學時的戀人潘嶽，也就是劉老師的兒子，當年因為畢業時潘嶽要回到這裏，他們才分手的。自從唯一的兒子死後，劉老師就一病不起，已經好久沒來學校上課了。縣裏曾派過幾個老師來這裏，但都因條件太苦而先後離去。村長騙她留下來等劉老師，順便代課，好應付縣教委檢查農村教育工作的事。她的留下使學校終於開課了。在代課的這段時間裏，她隱隱地感悟到了潘嶽為何放棄都市，放棄愛情的選擇，感悟到了他母親劉老師為何在這裏三十多年教書的選擇，也理解了孩子們渴望老師，渴望知識的願望，最終，她選擇了他們的選擇，代替了他們成為了一名鄉村教師，成為了殉道者的後來者。

The Substitute Teacher
The interior island of Po Yang Lake is a beautiful place that is far from the city. Because of the inconvenience of transportation, the living conditions there are rather poor. One day, a Shanghai girl, Gu Xiaolin, comes there to visit Ms Liu, a teacher who dedicates her life to this poor area. Actually, Gu comes there to condole her ex-boyfriend, Liu's son. Gradually, Gu begins to understand why Liu has been teaching here for more than 30 years and why her ex-boyfriend left the city and came here. She also realizes how eagerly the children here need teachers. Finally, she decides to stay and be a country teacher.
