About Sad Movie Sad Movie... A story of all the world's separations A foretold separation, resulting in a more beautiful love All the main characters in Sad Movie go through a separation. As is implied in the film's title, the film ends in painful separation, and the film's 8 characters all have their own stories and reasons. However, the plotline which moves towards separation is filled with tenderness such that it remains a bright and warm story. The film shows the various kinds of separation we can experience in our own life, and highlights the tragic but beautiful moments of love which precede it. The particular strength of the film is that it makes us appreciate the people around us more through the stories of separation between family, friends, and lovers. A separation story dreaming of love, the separations in Sad Movie are love by another name. I was cleaning up in anticipation of moving, and found my home filled with various things brought in from all sorts of places. Things that were broken, out of fashion, or which I never used, but which I couldn't quite bring myself to throw away. More than the object itself, it was because of the time and stories stored within those items... I remember the day when I had to part from my first car, Tico, which has grown old and didn't work well. If it's so hard to part from such objects, I wondered about those people with whom we shared so many emotions. There are so many movies about people who meet and start to love. However, I realized that it's hard to find films about people who separate. Actually, as we live our lives, we are forced to separate from so many precious objects and loved ones, parents, and friends, for so many different reasons. I wondered how it would be to make a film about people who break up with kind words. I wanted Sad Movie to depict not only separation between men and women, but the most sad and beautiful separations among all those that we encounter throughout our lives. By Eom Ju-young (development, original concept) Sad Movie... a film about sadness told with a new form Eight main characters, four kinds of separation, one heartbreaking emotion The four breakups experienced by Sad Movie's eight main characters are intercut to form a distinctive, unusually structured film. The stories about characters who resemble us, who love, break up, and go their separate ways, are untied and woven together into a single, detailed heartbreaking emotion. The new form attempted by Sad Movie not only gives viewers various kinds of enjoyment, but also allows them to recognize characters who share their own feelings. Sad Movie, the story of all our loves and separations, combines all the feelings of sympathy that we felt in other movies into one upgraded structure. The process of putting diverse characters into one narrative, and using multiple actors to tell a single story, is in itself a new experience. The film carries a different structure from ordinary features, however I didn't want to create a film by binding together disparate pieces. I feel that, more than the individual stories of how the characters meet and what coincidences bring them together, the overall sense of emotion in the film is most important. In Sad Movie I made efforts to show the emotions felt by all the different couples, but I concentrated more on making all of the emotions in the film fit together to form a single tone. Against the backdrop of the sadness and anxiety created by separation, I tried to depict the warm and bright image of people living on after separating. I hope that viewers of this film are able to encounter a character in which they may discover themselves, or a moment in which a precious memory of their own life is reflected. By Director Kwon Jong-kwan The structure of the screenplay was so accomplished that it helped to clear away the actors' anxieties. It beautifully brought together the stories of painful separation and the lingering feelings of love and longing into a unified sadness at the end. The film's title and plot can be seen as another kind of love story, and is greatly moving. Up until the very moment of separations, the couples' love is presented in a realistic and pure way. By Jung Woo-sung In this screenplay there are stories of regret-filled separations, but the love we see is made more beautiful by those separations. Amidst the sadness expressed by different kinds of separation one can also discover smiles, happiness, and contentment. The film contains stories of the sort of couples that we often see around us, and seeing the efforts of the various actors made me anticipate a more beautiful movie. I wanted to become one of those characters. By Im Soo-jung Synopsis Like a short spell of rain under the bright sunlight … Separation came upon us suddenly... 'I want to save a man who's fallen in love.' - Jin-woo The hot-blooded fireman Jin-woo (Jung Woo-sung), so that he can be forever with his much-loved girlfriend Soo-jung (Im Soo-jung), tries to prepare an impressive wedding proposal. However, being awkward at love, he keeps missing the chance to do it. At the same time a sense of apprehension continues to grow for Soo-jung, who prays every day for rain on behalf of her boyfriend who is always jumping into fires. 'I can't take it any longer... Every time I hear the siren, my heart drops.' -Soo-jung 'It's frustrating, unnerving, scary, sad, and futile. Let's break up.' -Sook-hyun Ha-seok (Cha Tae-hyun) is a pathetic new-generation man who has been unemployed for three years, and who is reduced to working part time as a boxing partner to earn money for dates. One day his girlfriend Sook-hyun (Son Tae-young) tells him coldly that she wants to break up. To win back the heart of Sook-hyun who has grown weary of being poor, Ha-seok starts up a 'separation agency' whereby he delivers breakup messages for people who have trouble saying the words themselves. By helping other couples to break up, can he save his own relationship? 'I started a separation agency so as not to separate from her.' -Ha-seok 'Tell my son thank you... for drawing me so prettily.' -Ju-young The extremely busy mother Ju-young (Eom Jung-hwa) is worried that her elementary school-aged son Hwi-chan (Yeo Jin-gu) is turning into a problem child. His teacher even calls her in due to a picture diary in which Hwi-chan tells lies. Then one day, she learns that she does not have much more time left to spend with her son. At this time the mother who was unable to do much for her son and her troublesome son begin a late but beautiful reconciliation. 'It's great that I can see her whenever I want. I wish that she would keep being sick.' -Hwi-chan 'I want to draw her just once.' -Sang-gyu The deaf woman Su-eun (Shin Min-ah) who carries a burn on her face gets to know her first love Sang-gyu (Lee Ki-woo) at an amusement park. Without being able to speak or show her face, she merely hangs around in front of him, unable to leave his presence because of her infatuated heart. Without knowing her situation, Sang-gyu becomes curious about her face and starts to approach her... Will Su-eun have the courage to show him? 'Thank you anyway for saying it. But I don't want to hear any more.' -Soo-eun We love each other so much, but now we must separate. Character & Cast 'Today, I'm going to make her the happiest woman in the world.' Jin-woo_A hot-blooded fireman filled with a sense of duty, a man who has fallen in love. Jin-woo in the words of Jung Woo-sung Jin-woo is a firefighter with a strong sense of duty. He's an ordinary man whose instincts push him to accept Soo-jung's love and to consummate their relationship in marriage, but his reasoning causes him to hesitate because of the danger of his profession. After realizing the extent of Soo-jung's love, and at the moment he takes a step toward furthering their love, they encounter a painful separation. Korea's top male actor, who moves the heart with his rich emotion Jung Woo-sung in the words of Im Soo-jung I could learn a lot from Jung Woo-sung, both in terms of film and on a human level. It was only a short time, but during the film's shooting I learned from the way he treated the crew and the way he prepared for his acting. I could understand the reason why he has remained a top star for ten years. As we would act together he would absorb 100% of the emotions I expressed, and return even more of his own. Occasionally he would discard the acting that he had prepared and improvise on the spot to match my emotions. He is truly an actor who is rich in sensitivity and expressiveness. 2004 <A Moment to Remember> / 2003 <Mutt Boy> / 2001 <Musa> / 1999 <Phantom, the Submarine> <Love> <Our Sunny Days>/ 1997 <Beat> / 1997 <Motel Cactus> / 1996 <Born to Kill> 'Every day I hope for rainshowers, for his benefit' Soo-jung_A beginning sign language interpreter working at a TV station Soo-jung in the words of Im Soo-jung Soo-jung is an ordinary woman in love, an interpreter of sign language who is about the same age as me. She always feels uneasy because she is in love with a man who works in the dangerous job of a fireman, but she loves Jin-woo a great deal. The couple of Soo-jung and Jin-woo love each other deeply and sometimes act like friends, sometimes like lovers. While acting the role I began to feel quite warm-hearted, so it's all the more painful when they had to break up. Soo-jung's worry in the scene where she asks before the start of the news if there will be rain is a memorable one. An adorable-looking actress who can move anyone to tears with her heart-rending acting. Im Soo-jung in the words of Jung Woo-sung An open-hearted actress who could sense and respond to my emotions well. She carries a purity about her, and is a woman who makes you want to love and protect her. A person who you want to see and stay in touch with over a long time, like a younger sister. 2005 <Sugar Cube> in production / 2004 KBS drama <I'm Sorry But I Love You> / 2003 <…ing> / 2003 <A Tale of Two Sisters> / 2002 <The Romantic President> / 2001 KBS drama <School 4> 'If only I could win her back, I don't care if everyone else in the world separates.' Ha-seok_ In his third year of studying for the public service exam. He gets by with money from boxing or from his girlfriend's spending money, and has opened a "separation agency" to help couples break up. Ha-seok in the words of Cha Tae-hyun A poor, unemployed man studying to be a public servant. In order to earn a few dollars he takes part in boxing practice as a side job, getting beaten up for money, and later he experiences a painful breakup, but he is a instintively optimistic person. Even though his girlfriend declares to him that she wants to break up, he believes that he can win her back, and tries his best to do so. In order to save his own relationship he starts a strange business known as a "separation agency" to help other couples break up. While acting, it seemed like a really poor thing to do. It is such a cruel profession, but he continued at it, so while acting the part I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. A new effort from the actor with a delicate sensibility behind his pleasant smile. Cha Tae-hyun in the words of Son Tae-young An always cheerful person. Usually at the start of shooting everything feels awkward, but thanks to his loosening of the atmosphere I was able to enjoy the shoot. Unlike the other couples, Sook-hyun and Ha-seok break up right at the beginning, so in that sense it was more difficult. However, because of Tae-hyun I was able to laugh while shooting. In that sense he had a great deal of concern for his acting partner. He would always joke around, but as soon as the shoot sign was given he would transform into his role, so it seems like he's a very instinctually talented actor. 2005 <My Girl and I> in production / 2004 <Two Guys> / 2004 MBC ??? <First Love of the Prince> / 2003 <Happy Naked Christmas> / 2003 <Crazy First Love> / 2002 <Lovers Concerto> / 2001 <My Sassy Girl> / 2000 SBS drama <Juliet's Man> / 1999 SBS drama <Happy Together> / 1999 MBC drama <Into the Sunlight> / 1999 MBC drama <I Love You> / 1998 MBC drama <Sunflower > / 1998 MBC drama <Shy Lover> / 1998 MBC drama <Ready Go> / 1997 <Halleluia> 'I no longer believe the words that you can love without anything else.' Sook-hyun_a part time cashier at a discount retail mart, a realist with a calm exterior Sook-hyun in the words of Son Tae-young A woman who, tired of being poor, gives up on love. She decides to break up for realistic reasons, but because she still loves him, it is difficult for her to do it. Repeating the same work day after day in a retail mart, she loses sight of the future and hits a brick wall. Although on the surface she seems cold to Ha-seok, who is trying everything to win her back, but inside I think she is hurting a lot. A beautiful woman with an innocent and quiet sadness Son Tae-young in the words of Cha Tae-hyun Although our paths had crossed briefly earlier, Sad Movie was the first time we worked together. Luckily the slight feeling of distance actually helped in acting the part of separating lovers. Tae-young is a genuinely nice person. She listens to other people extremely well, and so she watched over me while acting and made me feel comfortable. It's a shame that we only had a short time to work together. 2005 short film <Hearing a Memory> / 2004 <Ghost House> / 2003 KBS series <Shameful Rose> / 2002 MBC drama <Remember> / 2001 KBS drama <Purity> 'I'm the world's busiest mother, so to my son I'm a bad mother.' Ju-young_ An interior designer renowned for her abilities. A busy mother who has never once been able to volunteer directing traffic in front of the school. Ju-young in the words of Yeom Jung-ah A mother who always feels guilty towards her son because of her busy schedule. Because I've never been married or had a son, I had to act by using my imagination. Although I talked to some people I know, before shooting I was really at a loss. But ultimately when we started shooting, it was easy to become absorbed in the role. This story of a mother and son who can't humanly help but to part really touched my heart. Though it was me acting, I felt that the separation between Ju-young and Hwi-chan was the saddest moment in the film. An actress who emanates charisma with her mature acting skills and strong concentration. Yeom Jung-ah in the words of Yeo Jin-gu I called her Mom on the set, and it was really nice to have such a pretty mother with big eyes. When she acted like she was sick, I became worried because it really did seem like she was sick, and when she acted angry at me I was so scared that I almost cried. Having two mothers as we shot the film was both good and bad at the same time. 2005 <A Boy Goes to Heaven> in production / 2004 <Lovely Rivals> / 2004 <The Big Swindle> / 2004 MBC drama <Tell Me You Love Me> / 2003 <A Tale of Two Sisters> / 2003 SBS drama <Lover> / 2002 <H> / 2001 KBS drama <Purity> / 2000 KBS drama <Wang Gun> / 1999 <Tell Me Something> / 1997 SBS drama <Model> / 1996 <The Terrorist> / 1992 <Jazz Bar Hiroshima> …/ 1991 MBC drama <Our Heaven> 'I know that it's bad to lie. But it's worse that Mom is never home.' Hwi-chan_ A second-year elementary school student. A boy who does well on his own, but who keeps getting angry when his mother isn't around. Hwi-chan in the words of Yeo Jin-gu Jin-gu is a first-year elementary school student who always gets angry. His mother never comes to get him even when it rains, and at home he eats meals alone. That's probably why he has a bad temper. In the film he keeps a picture diary where he lies that his mother does bad things. Later he gets along better with his mother and he starts to behave, but he is forced to separate from her. Since I needed to look sad and cry for my acting, I thought of many sad thoughts. When I thought of separating from my mother, the tears came out by themselves. If I had to do that, it really would be sad. I feel sorry for Hwi-chan. A child actor chosen in an audition of 150 applicants, who can hold his own among a cast of Korea's top stars. Yeo Jin-gu in the words of Yeom Jung-ah After he was chosen in auditions from such a huge pool of applicants, I was curious about what kind of boy he would be. When I first met him, he really did seem to be the innocent Hwi-chan from the film. I worried at first because he had no acting experience, but Jin-gu's purity turned out to be his greatest weapon. As time passed his honest portrayal of innocence became deeper and more natural. We only spent a short time together, but thanks to Jin-gu's innocence I was quickly drawn to him. 'Could he really feel my gestures in his heart?' Su-eun_ A participant in a parade in an amusement park, a deaf woman with a bright and cheerful personality. Su-eun in the words of Shin Min-ah Su-eun is a deaf woman who carries a palm-sized burn on her face, but contrary to expectations she is a bright and cheerful girl. Actually it seems that she purposefully tries to act more cheerful in order to hide her wound. She works in an amusement park, wearing a doll costume that hides the burn on her face and her disability, and spends happy times there. So as I acted out the role of Su-eun experiencing her first love with Sang-gyu, I felt even more brokenhearted. With the fresh feeling of first love, an actress who projects shining potential. Shin Min-ah in the words of Lee Ki-woo I think that Min-ah is somewhat similar to the character of Su-eun that appears in the film. She shares the tendency not to talk a lot, there is a lot about her that is unknowable, and she perfectly fits the image of someone in love for the first time. In her pretty smile there is a purity but also a vulnerability and a determination to face the world cheerfully that seems similar to Su-eun. 2005 <Beast and the Beauty> in production / 2005 <A Bittersweet Life> / 2004 SBS drama <Punch> / 2003 <Madeleine> / 2001 <Volcano High> / 2001 SBS drama <Beautiful Days> 'When will I be able to draw her face?' Sang-gyu_ A street artist who draws portraits in an amusement park, a cute, pure youth Sang-gyu in the words of Lee Ki-woo An art student who paints portraits in an amusement park for older children. Like me, he's an ordinary character who likes to fool around but who also has an innocent side to his personality. As he slowly becomes enamored of Su-eun he starts to want to know how she really looks, but he keeps coming up against a wall and is not able to see her face. Even faced with constant failure, he keeps trying to approach her with a trembling heart, so I wanted to express Sang-gyu's purity and his feelings of first love. A newcomer who displays the pure image of a young boy, and a serious passion for acting. Lee Ki-woo in the words of Shin Min-ah I think he's an actor who can take on a wide variety of appearances. He's tall, with a youngish face, and looks like he just appeared out of a comic book, and I think he fits the image of Sang-gyu perfectly. Since our two characters don't have direct conversations and express much of what they say visually, it was especially important for us to cooperate well. With both of us a similar age and having quiet personalities, we were able to act together quite comfortably. 2005 <Tale of Cinema> / 2004 <Spin Kick> / 2004 SBS sitcom <Not Alone > / 2004 <He Was Cool> / 2003 <The Classic> Hot Issues The most beautiful screenplay of 2005, that captured the heart of all Korea's top stars The biggest inducement to bring all of the top stars of the screen and TV to appear in one film was Sad Movie's warm and beautiful screenplay. Jung Woo-sung was so taken by the screenplay that he not only agreed to appear in it despite already being cast in another film, but he persuaded fellow actor Cha Tae-hyun to appear in the role of Ha-seok. Actress Yeom Jung-ah, who is famous for never taking on two roles at the same time, initially turned down the role but after reading the screenplay, she made a special request to the producer to appear in this film as soon as shooting on her other film was finished. The other actors too, despite their busy schedules, expressed their wish to appear in the film, resulting in an unprecedented casting of big-name stars. Diverse and meaningful challenges for the actors Jung Woo-sung, who enrolled in special training at the 'Joongang 119 Relief Squad' to prepare for his role as a firefighter, where he shoots impressive scenes of fighting fires; Im Soo-jung, who received intensive private lessons in sign language before the opening of shooting; Shin Min-ah, wearing a doll costume in the searing heat, and having to learn sign language; Lee Ki-woo, who took painting lessons to perfect his role as a street artist... All of these actors in Sad Movie overcame various challenges to make for a more complete film. Child actor Yeo Jin-gu, who overcame a 150:1 competition and who fit in confidently with his famous co-stars Without the slightest bit of acting experience, 2nd-year elementary school student Yeo Jin-gu took part almost by chance in auditions, and wowed the director with his combination of pure innocence and mischievousness. Called "a kid with 100% potential" by the director, he overcame a 150:1 competition and fit in confidently with the other actors in Sad Movie. In contrast to their worries, Yeo Jin-gu displayed mature and emotional acting abilities that surprised the production team. This boy, who says he aspires to become a "cool-looking actor like Jung Woo-sung", is worth looking forward to for his cute mischievous image and his heartwarming tears. Sad Movie's ninth character, the original soundtrack made by Jo Dong-ik, Jang Pil-soon, and Cha Tae-hyun Another character of Sad Movie that expresses beautiful and sad emotions is none other than the music. Music director Jo Dong-ik, who can touch the deepest parts of one's heart with his soft music, teamed up with singer Jang Pil-soon to create sad, emotional music that only add to the film's beautiful images. In addition, actor Cha Tae-hyun who is also known as a singer lent his efforts to the original soundtrack to go with his restrained and heartfelt acting. A polished, refined image heightened by a wide 2.35:1 aspect ratio and Digital Intermediate processing The emotions of Sad Movie are not only expressed by the actors. Believing that a backdrop and setting can contribute as much to the emotions of a film as the acting, the production team chose a high quality 2.35:1 aspect ratio and made every effort to fill the entire screen with sentiment. Following his quick debut with The Aggressives in which he won notice for his stylish visuals, cinematographer Kim Byung-seo joined up with lighting director Shin Sang-yeol of A Bittersweet Life to create the refined visuals of Sad Movie. In addition, despite the extra time required in post production, Digital Intermediate processing was carried out so that viewers would experience the most beautiful and memorable images possible. Director_Kwon Jong-kwan "A truth-filled story about warm and cheerful people experiencing separation... I want to tell the story with straightforwardness and simplicity, just like the title Sad Movie." Director Kwon Jong-kwan, who drew international attention for his short films 28th October, 1979, a Sunny Sunday (1999) and Uncle Bar at the Barbershop (2000), won over the warm affection of viewers in fall 2004 with the distinctive romantic comedy S-Diary, about a hero who comes of age through experiencing love and memories. With Sad Movie, he will once again make use of his fine-tuned directing skills to tell a warm and light-hearted story about breaking up, infused with authenticity of character.
