SYNOPSIS
Couple 1
Min-su goes through meaningless relationships, thinking that love is nothing but a game. On the other hand, Hye-won is a happy, optimistic, and innocent girl who has a limited time left to live. On a rainy day, they run into each other like magic, which leads into a heartwarming love.
Couple 2
Kyung-min is both a friend and colleague of Min-su. He becomes shy and timid before a girl that he likes. Su-jin, a makeup artist, is a friend of Su-jin's. She knows everything there's to know about love in theory. In reality, she's a stranger to love.
Beginning of an heartwarming love - Now and Forever
These two couples hesitate before love, afraid of giving and receiving broken hearts. But as they become more honest with their feelings, they finally open their eyes to true love, helping each other in times of both happiness and pain.
HOT ISSUE
1. Pick a tree
It's a romantic mellow drama that's neither light nor heavy. It's a sad, but beautiful love story.
<Now and Forever> is a story about a couple falling in love as their time on earth draws nearer. What makes it unique is the fact that, even though it's a sad love story, it doesn't force the audience to shed tears over their destiny. To the contrary, it focuses more on an ardent, passionate love before death and tries to show as much bright sides as possible with some comic touch to it. Love is a universal theme, and <Now and Forever> balances successfully between the seriousness of a sad love story and lightness of a romantic comedy, brining both tears and laughter to the screen.
2. Plant a tree
<Now and Forever> speaks of love with a different approach to various types of love.
Unlike other love stories, different types of love of three couples exist in <Now and Forever>, and their love are closely connected like the branch-fused pair of trees. However, it doesn't focus on individual love affair to make it an omnibus film, which makes it differentiated from other movies of a similar genre. Furthermore, it's not only about love of couples, but of friends and families that the audience can sympathize with and relate to better.
3. Water the tree - Music
Ballads bring the beautiful visuals up a notch. Songs such as <It's Only Love>, <I Miss You>, and <A Little above Me> maximize the emotions and feelings of the movie. Of these pre-existing love songs, <A Little above Me> enriches the last scene, the highlight of the movie, touching the hearts of the audience. The singer of the song, Shin Seung-hoon, is said to have offered help, for he thought that the rhythm and lyrics of his song would fit with the ending perfectly. Another popular song used in the movie, <It's Only Love>, proved to be the best option for the scene where Min-su realizes his feelings for Hye-son.
PRODUCTION NOTE
Location hunting
A lot of scenes of the movie were shot on locations across the country, which means that the crew traveled around the nation to find the perfect places for the scenes.
Sooncheon Hospital: A lot of scenes were shot at the hospital, since Hye-won, the leading female character, is sick with an incurable disease. The director didn't want a typical hospital, since the building itself is a symbol that represents love. He wanted one that possesses the atmosphere of comfortableness and warmth. The crew spent months visiting every hospital in the country and succeeded in fining one that fit the image and ideas that the director had.
Bulgyo: This is where the couple goes fishing. They wanted a secluded, peaceful, and beautiful fishing site, and they found one on the lake where <A Tale of Two Sisters> had been shot. At the time of shooting, the place couldn't have been any more romantic with the setting sun reflecting in the still waters.
Udo: They needed a perfect place for the ending scene, the highlight of the movie. It's where a branch-fused pair of trees stand, which serves as a strong metaphor. And Udo was ideal. It's a small island off of Jejudo. It was rather hard to shoot with the strong wind and unpredictable weather, but the magnificent scenery was breathtaking enough to offset all those disadvantages.
Behind the dating scenes
Rain: The rain was used as an important prop throughout the movie for such scenes where Hye-won and Min-su meet for the first time and where he confesses his love to her. It's said that about 30 tons of water was used to create the rain for 10 scenes. The scene where Min-su confesses love in the rain to Hye-won was shot in November. Needless to say, JO Han-sun had to endure the cold throughout the night, and the crew was extremely worried about his health.
Bartender: Min-su makes a cocktail to make Hye-won happy. For this, Han-sun had to learn from a professional bartender whenever he could find time to make himself look real putting on a cocktail show. Surprisingly, Han-sun did the scene in one take. However, nobody said anything about what the cocktail of his creation tasted like.
Fishing site: It's the scene where Min-su becomes frustrated for he's not catching any fish, and Hye-won starts teasing him, grilling pork. Since Choi Ji-woo loves pork, she ate most of pork that was prepared for the scene, so that the prop guy had to keep refilling the stack.
Tourist attraction of Udo
Often times, places where movies are shot become tourist attractions once they prove to be successful in the box office. It cost 50 thousand dollars to build the branch-fused pair of trees that represents love, an important metaphor in the movie. After the shooting was over, it was donated to Jeju city. The city government is planning on building a park with the tree and other props used in the movie and promote it as a tourist attraction.
CHARACTER & CAST
Hye-won starts the last love of her life.
Sick at the hospital with an incurable disease, Hye-won tries to stay happy and cheerful. One day, she sneaks out of the hospital and runs into Min-su. Soon, she finds herself having feelings for him. She hesitates to bring the relationship to the next phase, knowing that she doesn't' have much time left with him. However, the world that she knew begins to change slowly, as he has stepped into her life.
CHOI Ji-woo
Known as Queen of Mellow Drama, CHOI Ji-woo is back with <Now and Forever>. Only this time, she doesn't play a timid and passive character. Her character, Hye-won, is a troublemaker who likes to fool around. Ji-woo says, "I see a lot of myself in her. I'm completely satisfied with my character."

DIRECTOR
Moments of splendid love scattered around throughout the movie...
Director KIM Seong-jung
<Now and Forever> is his directorial debut. He had worked as an assistant director on projects of various genres such as <Nowhere to Hide>. He also directed a number of short films viewing the world in his own perspective. He says, "Since the characters in the movie are dying, people automatically expect it to be a tearjerker. But that's not true. What I want to show the audience is the moments of splendid love that can be seen amid despair and pain."
STAFF
Director of Photography SEOK Hyung-jing
In <R Point> released in 2004, he captured the emotional changes of Korean soldiers in the jungle during the Vietnam War. He's known to use his own unique technique based on a high level of understanding on human psychology. In <Now and Forever>, he managed to prevent the characters' emotions from overflowing on the screen.
Gaffer LEE Ju-seng
In <When I Turned Nine>, he used warm, bright, and strong lights for retrospective scenes. Shining upon the lights of his choice, the characters come to life to its fullest, as if they wear clothes that fit them perfectly. In <Now and Forever>, he focused on the characters' emotions to be in harmony with the outstanding visuals.
