Lump of Sugar

Synopsis
(Short Ver.) The daughter of a poor rancher, Si-eun's only hope is to one day become a jockey. With her mother passing away at her birth, her favorite horse, Thunder, has become not only her friend, but also a soul mate. She is devastated when Thunder is sold to another owner, but when they are reunited two years later they have a chance to create a miracle by teaming up in a race.
Si-eun, born and raised at a ranch in Jejudo, is a child who is fond of horses. The bond is especially strong between her and the horse, Thunder, who lost its mother as a young foal. Their love for each other grows as time passes. Because Si-eun herself lost her mother as a little girl, she feels particularly attached to Thunder.
One day, Thunder is sold to another ranch, and Si-eun is forced to say goodbye to her beloved horse. Two years pass. Si-eun is now living in Gwacheon, training to become a jockey. Unexpectedly, she comes face to face with Thunder, and the two instantly recognize each other. Their reunion is tearful and moving. Through Si-eun's tender care, Thunder regains his lost abilities as a racehorse. In the end, the two enter a racing competition together. Si-eun's lifelong dream was to race with her beloved Thunder, and Thunder wants to make this happen for her no matter what. Surrounded by a crowd of cheering onlookers, they prepare to race one last time. Will they be able to achieve a miracle?
About Movie 1
Since the movie's preproduction stages, the role of Si-eun, the main character of Lump of Sugar, was purposefully put aside for Lim Soo-jung, Before shooting for the movie even began, Soo-jung spent 3 months learning the correct positions of horseriding, including the monkey position and various other jockey training positions. Kim Hyo-seob, a professional jockey, was asked to be her racing director, and Soo-jung also received coaching from Lee Shin-yeong and Lee Ae-ri, both professional female jockeys. It was also crucial for Soo-jung to become close to her other main character, the horse Thunder. For five months, she shot scenes with the horse in Jejudo, Gwacheon, and elsewhere. Now, the two are said to be immensely attached to one another. Soo-jung can now know what her horse is thinking just by glancing at his soulful eyes.
About Movie 2
Lump of Sugar tells a tale of a young girl who dreams of becoming the world's best jockey and the horse that helps her to achieve that dream. Lump of Sugar is also the favored snack of Thunder, Si-eun's horse in the movie. This favorite snack acts as a medium in bringing the two together, and the movie's title was taken from this to portray the best and fondest memories between Si-eun and Thunder.
This movie is Korea's first film about the friendship shared between a human and her animal. Instead of using complicated computer graphics to provide artificial imagery of the horse or highlighting the heroic side of the story, the movie focuses on the natural bond and friendship between Si-eun and Thunder. Si-eun loses her mother as a little girl, but she receives love and devotion from her horse Thunder. They are forced to be away from each other for a number of years, but fate soon brings them back together. The story then delves into the emotions evoked by the efforts of Si-eun and Thunder to achieve their dreams.
About Movie 3
The production crew had a hard, difficult time in casting the right horse for the role of Thunder. Because Chun-doong is the star of the movie opposite Lim Soo-jung, it was important to find the first horse to portray the necessary expressions and emotions throughout the movie. The production crew stayed in Gwacheon, Pusan, and Jejudo for a total of 6 months to concentrate on casting the right horse, and after months of inspecting the horses' physical traits, their expressions, and their personalities, the star was born. The horse that managed to overcome the competition rate of 1,000:1 to score the role of Thunder was a pure thoroughbred, with a clean, chestnut sheen and a whit diamond star on its forehead. This majestic horse also boasts agility and a strong gait, and it is truly a perfect fit for the role of Thunder.
Because the horse was responsible for many scenes throughout the movie, four other horses that shared a physical resemblance to the main horse were brought in to stand as understudies for Thunder. There have been cases wherein actors had to take on many roles for a single film, but Lump of Sugar was special in that it hired five horses to take on one role. Hwang Kyung-do, a horse manager and groom at the Korea Racing Association, was asked to direct the acting abilities of Thunder, and Kim Hyo-seob, a professional jockey, was brought in to coach the horse and Soo-jung for the racing scenes. A veterinarian and a personal stylist for the horse were always on the set. Lump of Sugar was unique in many ways.
About Movie 4
Lump of Sugar was filmed in various locations across the country, including Jejudo and Gwacheon. The vast, roaming flatlands of the ranches in Jejudo, as well as the romantic scenery of the first-ever horseracing scenes done by a Korean movie, make for rich, beautiful pictures and images in the film.
The ranch in Jejudo, over 60,000-pyong wide and located in Chunahorum, 650 meters above sea level of Mt. Halla, was built exclusively for the movie, with funding provided by the Jejudo provincial government. Small cottages and stables were built alongside the ranch to make it seem like a cozy rural village in Jejudo. The environmentally-friendly set was perfect in depicting the scenes of a young girl roaming the green pastures of the ranch with her beloved horse.
The racing scenes, the first-ever to be done in a Korean film, were reproduced with the help of the Korea Racing Association. Professionals were brought in to the Gwacheon Race Park, the 350,000-pyong race park located in Gwacheon, to recreate the racing scenes in their most realistic way. Along with racing director Kim Hyo-seob, 22 other professional jockeys were asked to join the set, as well as 34 racehorses, trained and tuned to their utmost condition.
