Red Hot Chili Peppers

This California based rock band was formed in 1983, released their first album 'Red Hot Chili Peppers' in 1984. They have experienced numerous line-up changes, since the release of their 3rd album 'The Uplift Mofo Party Plan'. Yet they have maintained critical and commercial success ever since, and managed to keep the top since their breakthrough 'Black Sugar Sex Magic'. They are said to be the pioneer of Modern Rock, having broken down many musical barriers by combining Rock, Pop, Punk, Funk, Heavy Metal, and Hip Hop altogether. Their explosive stage-show style (like their legendary performance in 'light bulb costumes' at Woodstock 1994) and their lyrics filled with melancholy, sadness and sorrow in some time, a positive atmosphere in other were also something to boost their heavy influence on music scene.

Their recent monster hit was their reunion album 'Californication' as the original member, John Frusciante came back in place of former Jane's Addiction's guitarist, Dave Navarro. 130 million copies were sold worldwide, becoming their biggest selling album ever. The next album 'By The Way' and its title song became another mega-hit. They went on sold-out Japan tour, including a performance at Fuji Rock Festival, and reconfirmed they were the top band. They went on another world tour subsequently, and again held the record as the fastest ticket selling of 3-day shows in Hyde Park. They recorded these performances in London, 2004, and released their first live album' Live in Hyde Park' (double CD).

In May 2006, they released their 9th album, 'Stadium Arcadium'. This 28-track double album was produced by Rick Rubin who got highly commercial success in rap and heavy metal. It has received very positive reviews so far, and its first single 'Dani California' became the band's fastest-selling single. It also became featured in DEATH NOTE.

Upon the selection of the theme song for "Death Note", its producer, Takahiro Salute said, 'We wanted artists as powerful as the original manga. Red Hot Chili Peppers was the best choice as they were one of the leading, inspirational, and most talented bands in the world." Red Hot Chili Peppers had their song featured in a film before, so he didn't expect a good reply from them when he sent a proposal together with English translation of the manga. To his surprise, the band gave him a go sign; they were happy to be involved. Among songs from their latest album, Dani California hit right in Salute's heart. Catchy and dynamic melodies that grab attention instantly added flamboyancy to the film. 'The story is about the notebook which kills anyone once his or her name is written down on. Death God appears, too. More fantasy than realism, but we wanted to make the film as realistic as possible. Red Hot Chili Peppers' powerful chords helped making the film more realistic.' said Salute.

In regards with this tied-in project, members commented
'Don't be afraid to check out our song, DANI CALIFORNIA. It's a theme song for the movie, DEATH NOTE.' (Anthony Kiedis)
'We are very proud to be involved and happy to be involved.' (Flea)
Current members are Anthony Kiedis (vo), Flea(b), John Frusciante (g), Chad Smith (dr).

Also confirmed as a headliner for Fuji Rock Festival '06.

<Cast>

TATSUYA FUJIWARA <Light Yagami> Born in May 15th, 1982 in Saitama prefecture. Fujiwara passed the audition for Yukio Ninagawa' play "Shintokumaru" in 1997 when he was 15. He made his debut with the play at Barbican Theater in London. He became famous for his extraordinary concentration and passionate performance, and started working for various fields; plays, films, TV programs and TV Commercials. In 2003, he played main role for a play "Hamlet" (Directed by Yukio Ninagawa) and received many awards. He was also awarded for Best Actor at 27th Japan Academy Awards for "Battle Royale" in 2001. (Directed by Kinji Fukusaku). In 2005, he made his NY debut with a play "MODERN NOH PLAYS <SOTOBA KOMACHI/YOROBOSHI> " and got great reviews.

For this film adaptation of comic "DEATH NOTE", one of the most important things was the casting for the main character, Light Yagami. The title is not really an action film but more like a psychological thriller. The main character, Light is a university student learning law. He uses DEATH NOTE to kill criminals and make "an ideal world without crimes". The character has paralleled attractiveness. He is heroic but evil. Tatsuya Fujiwara, who has high reputation for his performance, was the only actor who could play this difficult role. He had played many complicated roles such as Hamlet, Toshinori in "Yoroboshi" and Akiya in "Battle Royale", and those experiences made 'Light' alive.

"Light commits crimes with no emotion, and because this film does not have huge action scenes, playing Light became more difficult for me. The first time I read the original story, I thought playing L would be more interesting because he was eccentric. Light does not have strong characteristic figures like 'L'. His feelings and thoughts only could show with expressions on his face. For example, I tried to make differences with his smiles along with the situations. The film became more interesting with his childhood friend, Shiori, who does not appear in the original story, and some scenes which does not exist in the original. It was so exciting to plan how to play 'Light' for the astonishing climax of film version of DEATH NOTE. Books in the film set of Light's room were useful for playing 'Light'. I just felt like I understood the guy, Light¡K There were many legal books and books about crimes. A photo book of wars gave a strong impression on me personally " said Fujiwara. ¡@The letters on DEATH NOTE in the film was written by Fujiwara himself. He said "I don't have any confidence on writings, so it is embarrassing¡K" ¡@

He also had to play with a real size Ryuk doll when the scenes with Ryuk were filmed, because Ryuk is created by CG. Fujiwara's performance succeeded to make fake into a "reality".

"Dolls do not act, so I was doing kind of one-man show. Light and Ryuk are together in many scenes, so I was acting by myself a lot. It was actually hard. I think one of the most interesting things in acting is creating atmosphere or space with other actors and actresses. I tried to communicate with the director a lot, instead of the communication with them. This film has many cuts, and we should have shot the same scenes with many different angles, which was also hard for me. It was a different experience from acting on a stage everyday for a month. I think our effort made the film more exciting and elaborate." said Fujiwara. Fujiwara himself became a big fan of the original.¡@

"My niece is the fan of the comic and she had told me about it. I read it when I got an offer for the role, and it was so great that I couldn't stop reading. Light keeps killing people with DEATH NOTE, but he has a good intention to make a better world and only kills criminals. Murder is a horrible thing, but I could understand his idea of making a new 'ideal world'. The famous classic masterpiece "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoyevsky has the similar theme. DEATH NOTE is very eccentric story but depicts very permanent theme."

His other know works are "Battle Royale II: Requiem" (2003: Directed by Kinji & Kenta Fukasaku) and "Moonlight Jellyfish" (2004: Directed by Kosuke Tsurumi).

Kenichi Matsuyama <L / Ryuzaki>

Born in Aomori on March 5th, 1985. Kenichi Matsuyama won the grand prize at "New style Audition" organized by HORIPRO¡ÑBoon¡ÑPARCO in 2001. He made the professional debut in the same year featured in an advertising campaign called "Looking for a new 'new'" for PARCO.

His first feature film was Bright Future (Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa) in 2002. He played the lead in 2003 for the first time in Winning Pass (Directed by Shinichi Nakata). In 2005, he appeared consecutively in blockbuster films such as NANA¡]Directed by Kentaro Otani¡^and Otoko-tachi no Yamato /YAMATO¡]Directed by Junya Sato¡^. Matsuyama with amazing versatility gets into any character he plays from a high-school student to a back musician or a navy soldier. He made a strong impression notably in Junya Sato's Otoko-tachi no Yamato /YAMATO playing a young man in wartime portraying his struggles for life.

Matsuyama plays in DEATH NOTE the role of L who is the biggest rival of Light, the protagonist. L was sent to Tokyo by ICPO as a trump card to investigate Kira case. L's background is unknown. Matsuyama challenges L who is a character prominently odd with his slight stoop and the habits to stay on bare foot, to squat down on a chair or to eat only sweets but corners Light with the exceptional ability to reason, gather and analyze information.

Matsuyama successfully transformed with the eye makeup to look like L in the original manga. L's squatting habit was apparently not easy for Matsuyama for he is not very flexible, nonetheless Matsuyama aggressively took part in film making as choosing himself the kind of sweets L is suppose to eat or considering the detail gestures of the character as L mocks the adults from the investigation headquarters.

"I'd like to play L as I think and feel. I would be happy if I could live L." said Matsuyama.

"Kira is a singular exhibitionist, a shamefully infantile criminal with false sense of justice" L provokes Kira as Matsuyama confronts his senior Tatsuya Fujiwara who plays Light. The face-off of the two actors is also a must-see in this film. "Two of them are rare actors who can play the beautiful young boys as portrayed in manga" said Shusuke Kaneko, the director of the film praising both Fujiwara and Matsuyama. Matsuyama's other feature films are Furyo shonen no yume (2005 / Directed by Junji Hanado), Custom Made 10.30 (2005 / Directed by ANIKI), Linda Linda Linda (2005 / Directed by Atsuhiro Yamashita) and many others. For TV, he has appeared in numerous TV dramas including GOKUSEN¡]NTV¡^, BE BOP HIGHSCHOOL¡]TBS¡^, One Liter of Tears¡]CX¡^

Another feature film Oyayubi sagashi (Directed by Naoto Kumazawa) is also to be released in this summer.

Asaka Seto <Naomi Misora>

Born in Aichi on December 12th, 1976. Aska Seto is an actress in demand working widely for film, TV and TVCF. She made her filmic debut in 1992, and has stared in numerous films including 2/2 (2006 / Directed by Hidehiro Ito), Chakushin ari 2¡]2005¡þDirected by Renpei Tsukamoto¡^and Travail¡]2002 / Directed by Kentaro Otani¡^. She was recognized also in overseas for her performance in Bullets of Love¡]2001 / Directed by Andrew Lau¡^where she played a leading role.

Seto plays in DEATH NOTE the role of Naomi Misora, the fiancee of Raye who is a FBI agent. Naomi goes after Kira alias Light, pursues the criminal bearing the brunt of her own tragedy. Naomi Misora appears in the episode highly popular among the fans of the original manga.

"She is an awesome lady who went after the criminal, willing to sacrifice herself and fought. I tried to project that awesome spirit. I heard that there are many fans of Naomi Misora and felt a little pressure, but I did my best not to betray the fans expectation", said Seto. Seto's presence with the beauty and strength is recognized not only in Japan but also internationally. She showed charisma and range portraying Naomi, the woman of both courage and tenderness who is an investigator but also a woman in love wishing the happiness with the man she loves. The scene where Naomi corners Light is remarkable.

"The scene that made an impression on me was the subway scene. We had a subway train to ourselves to shoot the sequence. This was never done and I don't think it would again¡K., provably. I don't really have a chance to use subway normally, so the shooting was pretty hard, but I enjoyed it. It was a very valuable shooting experience for me".

About DEATH NOTE, "It's a very interesting film. The idea of DEATH NOTE is scary. Anyone who had the name written on it would die and one can kill anyone by writing the name of the person. Reading the original manga kept me in suspense and made my heart pound. It frightens me to imagine, if such a notebook really existed, and if I were to suddenly have it in my hands", said Seto.

Seto's other work includes TV drama Oh-oku episode 1 (CX) and Nyokei Kazoku (TBS). A feature film BLACK NIGHT Japanese version she stared also will be released this summer.

Yu Kashii <Shiori Akino>

Born in Kanagawa on February 16th, 1987. Yu Kashii spent her childhood in Singapore. She started her career as a model for a magazine called mc sister in 2001. She worked mainly for TV drama and TVCF before Water Boys¡]CX¡^, a TV drama that led her to her film debut with Lorelei: The Witch of the Pacific Ocean in 2005. Kashii showed range playing the mysterious and complicated character that was a part of the machine (battleship) while being a human. She won New Actress Award in the same year at the 29th Yamaji Fumiko Award. The lucidity she projects in her performance in the numerous works makes Yu Kashii one of the most promising young actresses today. Kashii plays beautiful and talented Shiori Akino in DEATH NOTE who is an original character created for the film. Shiori goes to the same university as Light Yagami and has known him from the childhood. She loves Light, but disagrees with Light for she believes that it's only the law that should try people. She plays an important role in revealing the ideal of Light.

Kashii was a keen reader to start with of the original manga of DEATH NOTE.

"So, I was so happy to know that I got a part in the film, but at the same time, I was concerned if DEATH NOTE fans would accept to have Shiori who is a new original character to enter in the world of DEATH NOTE. Shiori doesn't exist in the original work, so I hope people would instead enjoy through Shiori not only the excitement of the original manga but also the elements that only the film can offer. ¡K. Shiori is very innocent. She believes in justice, very earnest and "common". So, that's why the way she thinks is closest to that of the audience. ¡K.There were many things that I experienced for the first time in shooting this film, as having a whole bus, or museum to ourselves, or using the exterior screens in the streets of Harajuku and so on¡K I think it's a film I would not forget." Said Kashii.

Her other films include Linda Linda Linda (2005 / Directed by Nobuhiro Yamashita) , HOLD UP DOWN (2005 / Directed by SABU) and Until the Night Come Back (2005 / Directed by Takashi Minamoto) and as for TV drama Nyokei Kazoku¡]TBS¡^. Two feature films, Starlit High Noon (Directed by Yosuke Nakagawa) and The Pavillion "Salamandre" (Directed by Masanori Tominaga) will be released this summer.

Shigeki Hosokawa <FBI agent Raye>

Born in Gifu on December 16th, 1971. Shigeki Hosokawa started his career as an actor in 1992, and has been working actively in film, TV drama and TVCF. He played the lead in a feature film for the first time in Komachi (Directed by Rokuro Mochizuki) in 2005. Further flourishing of his career is well expected.

Hosokawa plays in DEATH NOTE a FBI agent, Raye who investigates Kira case. Hosokawa's cool look and sharp movements match Raye who holds the key to greatly turn the story in the film.

"It's unlikely to have a Japanese FBI though, nonetheless what I did was to build the strength, tenderness and the feeling of mortification of the character I play", said Hosokawa who carefully portrayed the image of the original character who has a different name.

"It was pretty impressive having the subway to ourselves for shooting the subway sequence, the crucial moments for Raye. Thanks to the huge cooperation Fukuoka municipal subway gave us, we had the subway station from the point of last train until earliest train on the next day and on top that we had special train run 4 times for our shooting. Such tremendous cooperation made it possible to realize the film faithfully to the original work. It was an experience I was able to have because of the film".

About the film being the adaptation of a popular manga, "I feel happy for it's the adaptation into a live-action film of the super popular manga but at the same time pressure too. I also sense the enthusiasm in the approach where the films are to be released as part1 and 2, and this is quite unusual these days. But, anyhow it is scary to think if such a notebook really existed", commented Hosokawa. Hosokawa's other films include Masked Rider Hibiki (2005 / Directed by Taro Sakamoto) ¡B Taian ni butsumetsu (1998 / Directed by Seiji Izumi) , Yabu no naka (Directed by Hisayasu Sato) . He plays in numerous TV dramas including NHK epic drama Yoshitsune (NHK) and Masked Rider Hibiki ¡]EX¡^. He appears in variety shows as well in recent years. Erika Toda <Misa Amane>

Born in Hyogo on August 17th, 1988. Erika Toda made her debut in Morning TV drama series Audrey (NHK) in 2001. She has been working mainly for TV drama and TVCF. Engine (CX) in April 2005 where she had a regular part got a high television rating and it led Toda in October of the same year to play the part of protagonist's beautiful and smart girlfriend in Nobuta wo Produce (NTV), a TV drama adapted from a bestseller novel. This drama further increased her popularity. Toda has been playing the heroine of a popular drama Galcir ¡]NTV¡^since April this year. Toda is one of the hottest young actresses today.

DEATH NOTE is her first feature where she plays the role of Misa Amane alias Misa Misa. People were most curious to find out who would play this role. It was not only because Misa Amane being a popular character in the original manga, but also plays the important role in the development of the story.

"The original DEATH NOTE was nothing like what I'd read before. It surprised me from the start, so "I've never read anything as complicated and interesting as this!" I said to myself, and I got more involved in its world as I read on, so I am more than happy to be involved in this film. This is my first feature as well, so I can't wait to see the finished films", said Toda.

"I will do my best not to spoil the image of Misa Amane that the fans embrace", said Toda sincerely.

As for her first experience shooing in a film studio, "I enjoyed playing Misa, although it was tough for Misa being the character always so hyper from the start. And the director helped me to relax also by talking to me", she explained. Toda fitted so naturally into the original Misa's rather particular costume that it generated the excitement at the production site.

He started to work as a choreographer after he came back to Japan and choreographed for TV shows and TV commercials. He got a regular part in TV series as an actor for the first time in 1996. Fujimura plays in DEATH NOTE, the role of Watari, an elderly gentleman who acts as the contact man to L who is ICPO's trump card. Despite Watari's nonchalant air about him, one may speculate he could be someone in important position. He appears in the important scene where he brings the Kira investigation team members to L.

"To play Watari, I thought his presence would come alive if I were able to project the mood of this mysterious old gentleman without the air of livelihood¡K." Fujimura said, and added, "We all played the characters from manga, weren't we? I think we all started to resemble the manga character that each played of during the filming" pointing out as nonchalantly as Watari and for that precisely he is just right for Watari. The crews were convinced that Fujimura matched perfectly the mysterious Watari.

Fujimura also commented on the original work.

"For someone like myself who belongs to the analog world, I felt the sense of today's generation from the idea. It's amazing¡K."

Fujimura's other films include Ghost Shout (2004 / Directed by Renpei Tsukamoto), Hero? Heisei Gamera Trilogy; Gamera, Guardian of the Universe (1995), Gamera 2: The Advent of Legion (1996), Gamera 3: The Revenge of Irys (1999), all became his great critical success. His recent credits include Azumi 2: Death or Love (2005¡^ and A Toast to Love (2002¡^. A new film, God's Left Hand / Devil's Right Hand is much awaited for its release.

Japanese cult hit manga, Death Note is about a notebook which kills anyone simply with his or her name written down. Light Yagami, a bright high school student, found this notebook that Death God Ryuk accidentally dropped, and started killing criminals around the world¡K¡K It involves a peculiar interaction between reality and fantasy; the relationship between human beings and Death God. With his credits, Kaneko was opted as the right director for its film version. He was widely recognized for his style with an ample of CG and special effect techniques, and therefore, capable of making great entertainment film out of this manga. He was also acclaimed for his visualizing techniques of deep and complicated psychology in the film. With Gamera trilogy for instance, he managed to create a big entertainment film with psychologically profound elements.

"It is a very traditional technique, as seen in Doraemon and E.T." said, Kaneko. "But with DEATH NOTE, there was a new challenge as I had to deal with the relationship between the boy and the Death God. It is a new kind. Not just a brotherhood or a friendship type. They were emotionally distanced each other, yet they were bound together."

In the course of filming this fictional manga, one of his focuses was psychological pain. "The original manga barely touched the pain of those who were brutally killed by the one who uses Death Note. I shot the film from this aspect, so that I could emphasize how those mysterious massacres came to take place, and also how Kira, the mastermind, became adored by young people. In order to make the story more realistic, I also added scenes about how the police investigated the series of murder incidents with the variety of information sources."

While Light kept killing violent criminals one after another, the police was after him because he was the mass murderer by any sense. The story was told in a very realistic and also compelling way, by showing the contrast between the youth (Light) and the adult (the police) in terms of attitudes and thoughts. "In the beginning, Light dropped a copy of The Compendium of Laws, and picked up Death Note. That signified that he was a revolutionist who fights the bad around the world on his own." Kaneko added.

The film version introduced a new female character, Shiori. She stirred up Light's revolutionary spirit furthermore. "In one scene, Shiori said "Throughout the history, all the revolutions have failed by themselves." By her saying this, I wanted to describe what Light had to face in a much deeper sense. As more shot I took, the more personal I felt towards Light, so I thought this lonesome hero was pure, and agreed with him in a way" said Kaneko and added that "Freedom has made the world better, while it has allowed violent criminals easily out on the street with less restriction, and let them do things as they like. Something should be done to solve this dilemma, and everyone might well feel that it was fair to kill bad ones with Death Note, like what Light did. But, we need to understand how powerful Death Note could be. Anyone could go to hell once his or her name was written on this notebook. Such kind of psychological fear could be more nightmarish than Kaiju monsters destroying cities and killing people."

The scene Light reads Nietzsche's Jenseits von Gut und Boese in German is not included in the original manga, for example. The film DEATH NOTE is likely to be a more socio-political drama than the manga, which has contained such context underneath.

"The definition of justice has been changing throughout the years. It is changing right at the moment, too. I feel this kind of story was made at the right time, at the right place. It was bound to happen." said, Kaneko.

Upon CG making of Death God Ryuk, Kaneko commented that he wanted to create him more than just a good CG animation. "One of the most crucial parts of the film was the conversation between Light and Ryuk, so I took extra care when I shot their scenes. Ryuk's physical structure was different from humans', so I had to drop the idea of someone getting inside Ryuk costume. Yet still, I wanted the audience to feel that someone was wearing Ryuk costume and talking with Tatsuya Fujiwara. I might ask for too much, but wanted Ryuk to be seen as something more than a product of the latest CG technology."

Kaneko's other credits include; GMK - All Out Monsters Attack (2001), Cross Fire (2000), F (1998), School Ghost Story 3 (1997), It's a Summer Vacation Everyday (1994), Necronomicon (1993), Summer Vacation 1999 (1988). PRODUCTION NOTES

<Very unique, and compelling world of DEATH NOTE>

Light Yagami's Room

Light's room was used most for the setting of this film. For the first 2 weeks, the crew filmed scenes like conversation between Light and Ryuk and Light writing down names on a page of the notebook. The room was kept tidy and minimal, surrounded with academic books, foreign books, criminal history books, and judicial books, as seen in the original manga. It showed Light's personality so much in detail that Tatsuya Fujiwara, who played Light, later said ' This room gave me a first step to understand Light.'

The birth of the Death God Ryuk

Ryuk, the figure made out of CG animation had numerous interactions with Light in the story. Filming crew and CG company DIGITAL FRONTIER went through many meetings and elaborated technical steps to shoot one scene. Shots of Light and Ryuk's model aimed for CG guidance, shots of Light alone against Bluescreen, and shots of background footages alone. Background footages were filmed from all angles in order to make shadows and reflections of lights realistic. Tatsuya Fujiwara was required to repeat a same scene, acting exactly same in each time. It was highly skillful, and necessary to have much more concentration.

With the height of 2 meters, the model figure for the CG animation was designed in detail to look as close as Ryuk in the original manga. Gritty accessories he wore were all made out of molds.

One snowy day in Aoyama, Tokyo. The crew filmed scenes Light found Death Note and met Ryuk for the first time. They made Ryuk model come down from the sky, and talked with Light by using a huge lorry. The shooting took very long hours, lasted until midnight.

An astonishing number of extras joined in 'Death Note'

One of the biggest surprises for the crew was the number of candidates who wanted to take part in Light's university campus scenes. More than 500 people turned out instantly as soon as the crew advertises. They could not help but feel the hype of the original manga and high expectations for the film. It took 2 days to film the scenes together with Light, Shiori, Naomi, and all the 500 extras.

Light watched news on a huge TV screen mounted on the side of a tall building, writing down the name of a criminal who shut himself up with a bunch of innocent people¡K. This scene was filmed in front of Studio Alta, Shinjuku, and here, drew nearly 100 extras to take part. Even though the crew announced the following news was not true, many bystanders who came across the street believed it and were surprised at the news due to its content.

Meanwhile, the scene Shiori watched L's statement on a huge TV screen was shot in Harajuku. Once people watched L declaring war against Kira on screen, they noticed it was part of the film, DEATH NOTE, and cheered up one after another.

In Fukuoka, more than 1000 people took part in the scene in underground. Unbelievable numbers of people's cooperation made the scene more realistic and dynamic than ever.

"We would like to create scenes that fan can all join in for the part 2." Said one crew member.

As real as it could be; behind the scene of hijacking a bus

Light, FBI, Raye, and Shiori all involved in this hijacking scene. A chartered bus wrapped with Misa Amata's photo was going around Makuhari area. It was thought most suitable for filming as the area had less traffic lights and wider roads. Hijacking was supposed to take place when the bus was moving. It meant only a very limited number of crew was allowed to be inside the bus, and therefore, made it difficult to carry out. It turned out however, that this secluded environment made the scene gripping, and more realistic than ever.

Chartering an entire underground line
for the first time ever in Japanese film history

Shooting the Underground scenes was the biggest operation during the production. Light, FBI, and Raye were all involved. It was also one of the highlights in the original manga. The most thrilling and essential for the story, yet, there was a huge problem; the underground was public transport and not easily chartered like taxi or bus. The location was supposed to be Tokyo, so the crew asked for permission from Tokyo Metro. But they failed in negotiation, as the condition was too restricted. They looked for Saitama, Chiba, and Kyushu to allow them to do what they wanted.

Airport Line in Fukuoka, Kyushu region finally gave them a go sign thanks to Film Commission in Fukuoka, but it was again, a very long and hard way. Airport Line firstly allowed the crew to film after the last train as more than 260 -270 thousands people used this line daily. But the crew needed to charter the train during the daytime because that was part of the setting of the scene. It seemed almost impossible to get a permission, but the crew's determination and the popularity of this original manga made a miracle happen. They were given 48 hours, and allowed to shoot during daytime.

There was not a moment to waste. No mistake should be made. The crew rolled the film under such pressures. Absolutely no sleep as they had to shoot scenes during the nighttime, too. About 1000 extras joined, which made one of the most memorable scenes, just like in the original.

<On CG animation>

The latest and the best technology that
DIGITAL FRONTIER are proud of

Credits include; Full 3 DCG animation film APPLESEED and Tokyo Zombie, CG production of Ping Pong and Aegis. DIGITAL FRONTIER has an exclusive motion-capture studio with 58 cameras----the biggest in the Far East / Asia, that is. They have a very good reputation for 100 % CG animation character making. In DEATH NOTE, they explored a new field; the combination of animation and live action.

"We wanted something like The Lord of the Rings", said a man in charge of this project. The team was comprised of 30 people plus 3 directors. Directors developed codes to create Ryuk based on the data taken from motion -captures, observed live action scenes and combined them with animations. They were also involved in camera rehearsals and mood lightings, which made the digital transition smoother and realistic.

Ryuk had to resemble the one in the original manga, but it would lack the realism if he were too manga-like. He could not be too 'life-like', on the other hand. It was extremely difficult to take a balance. The team assembled 5-60 cuts showing Ryuk's peculiar behaviour from the manga, which became a basis for their work.

Another difficulty that they faced was Ryuk's physical appearance: he wore black cloths and his face was pale, while his eyes were yellow. The color yellow was likely to pop out in contrast with other two colors, so the balance became, again, the most important issue. In order to avoid a computer generated look, Ryuk's earrings, wings, and particularly Death Note that he was carrying around his waist were carefully made to look realistic. The team spent countless hours to gain a satisfactory result.

Not only technology, but also highly sophisticated imagination was required to create Ryuk. For instance, he floated in the air without using his wings. All his movements were heavily dependent of designers' imagination.

There were 4 types of softwares the team used. Boujou for camera tracking, MotionBuilder for creating animation, maya for lighting and other works, AfterEffects for combining animations and live actions. "The latest trend of CG technology is to show how realistic the animation could be with less layers." One member of the team said. The result is; Ryuk is as lively as Light on screen.

Blockbuster movie kinds of actions were less involved in this film. More theatrical in a sense. The Director, Kaneko, gave the team a hard time by shooting a minute long scene of Ryuk chatting with Light. It was because Kaneko wanted Ryuk to look as real as Light. As all the movements were rather still and quiet, the team needed to take care of minor gestures. "It was harder than an action scene. But we could prove how much CG technology had developed more."

They had to pay extra attention whether Ryuk made a proper eye contact with Light. "It all depends on how we create movements, lighting and coloring, so we did take an extra care for it, too."

They made about 60 CG cuts, plus 10 cuts for special scenes. They also made CG for scenes in response to Kaneko's request, adding some meaningful atmosphere.
