Someone once said, "The age of nine is an age when one can start to feel the meaning of his existence."
Everyone experiences the life of a nine year old. And it sure ain't an easy life. It is an age when one begins to think of himself as a grown up but the truth is, he's still only a child trying to work out problems that are difficult and complicated, such as troubles with his family, his friends, his school or his first love. In <When I Turned Nine>, what we see through a boy named Yeo-min is a portrait of ourselves at the age of nine. Even as a nine year old, Yeo-min's decision and courage in solving problems that life throws at him are wise and respectable. At the end, he surpasses being a child and becomes a man in our eyes.

Plus, characters such as Yeo-min's parents, who are poor but live happily, Black Bird's parents, whose daily routine includes vicious fights and heavy drinking, Pal-bong, a closet philosopher who believes he is the only one with the true knowledge of the world, and Yoon-hee, a piano teacher with crystal clear purity, enrich the story with more colors and depth.
¡½ Production Note
Here comes Korea's 'Haley Joel Osment' and 'Dakota Fanning'!
- 14 child actors chosen from national audition
Since 90% of the story is told through children, finding the right child actors who could carry out the film turned out to the biggest task of <When I Turned Nine>. Not only that, since the story is set in Kyungsang Province, the actors had to be fluent in Kyungsang dialect. Starting in June 2003, open auditions were held in all the major cities nationwide. As the result, the lead actors KIM Suk and LEE Se-young were chosen along with key supporting actors for the roles of 'SHIN Ki-jong,' 'OH Keum-bok,' 'Black Bird' and others.
KIM Suk for the role of 'BAEK Yeo-min' and LEE Se-young for the role of 'JANG Woo-rim' are both veteran actors with 8 and 10 years of experience under their belts. They both began their acting career at a very young age, and already, they have matured and grown up to take the leading roles in a feature film.
Even with grueling 4 month long filming in a rural province, all the young actors never lost their enthusiasm and impressed crew and cast members with their competitive spirit.
Talented staff members joined hands in creating the most unforgettable world
- The industry's specialists have come together for the most touching film of the year!
Korean film industry's legendary production company Hwang Ki Sung Films, Inc. and the industry's most prominent specialists have joined together to create the most heartwarming drama <When I Turned Nine>.

In contrast to its original novel, in which the main focus of the story is the collection of different episodes, the film centers around the love story of two main characters. Plus, instead of its original setting of Seoul, the film is set in Kyungsang Province with much stronger characteristics. For the film, LEE focused on creating one main dramatic story along with collection of different episodes from the original novel. LEE has successfully created a beautiful drama by placing Yeo-min and Woo-rim's romance story at the center and decorating it with the trivial stories of children's daily lives and the world of grown ups seen from a child's point of view.

# The most difficult and the most memorable moments of <When I Turned Nine>
Episode 1.
KIM Suk gets mercilessly beaten up!
When Yeo-min is suspected for stealing Woo-rim's money, he gets mercilessly beaten up by his teacher. Coincidently, Yeo-min's teacher in <When I Turned Nine> is played by AHN Nae-sang, who also played the role of KWON Sang-woo's ruthless teacher in <Once Upon a Time in High School>. Therefore, it is needless to say the beating scene of Yeo-min was as cruel as one can possibly imagine. In order to capture the most realistic scene, the scene was to be shot in one take with absolutely no retake. When 'Action!' was called, KIM Suk was slapped, pushed and kicked repeatedly in total of 31 times. After 'Cut!' was called, KIM assured all the staff members that he was alright. However, later on he had to go to the emergency room for a treatment. KIM, who had not shed any tear during the whole filming except for when he had to shave his beloved sideburns for his character's bowl cut hairstyle, showed his tears after this scene was finished. It was the most painful and difficult shoot for KIM and all staff members.
Episode 2.

The boy had come over to confess his love to her for the first and the last time when he found out that she was leaving town.
This is a sweet memory of first childhood love that everyone holds dearly in his or her heart. In order to capture the most memorable and cherishable kiss scene, KIM Suk gave LEE Se-young over 30 kisses. As the result, the audience will be delighted with the sweetest and the most unforgettable kiss scene in the history Korean Cinema.

At the audition, KIM's appearance and his acting skill won the hearts of all the juries. However, one the most important characteristics of his character Yeo-min was the Kyungsang Province dialect. In order to fully become Yeo-min, KIM practiced the Kyungsang dialect for day in and day out and finally, won over director YUN's approval. Even at a young age, KIM is a strong willed person with great perseverance and positive attitude. He's currently serving as the class vice president at his school.
