>>> About the Movie

What is SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE about?

The most anticipated Korean film of 2005

Director Park Chan Wook, who won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes International Film Festival for his dark and violent thriller Oldboy, surprised many when he announced that the last film in his blood-soaked "vengeance series" would star a heroine. When people learned that the female lead would be none other than Lee Young-ae (immensely popular around Asia for such films as One Fine Spring Day and such television dramas as The Jewel in the Palace), and that the object of her revenge would be Choi Min-sik (the unhinged star of Oldboy), anticipation for SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE grew even higher.

Most significantly, this is the first time Lee Young-ae and Park Chan Wook have worked together since Park's hugely popular 2000 hit JSA: Joint Security Area. After focusing on male characters in the first two films of his vengeance trilogy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy, Park wanted to switch gears and explore a different direction. Writing with Lee Young-ae and her serene, gentle image specifically in mind, Park created the character Geum-ja, a mysterious woman who is at once the most heavenly of angels and the darkest of devils. The result of this inspired collaboration of Park Chan Wook and Lee Young-ae is the unique and piercing film SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE.

If the first two focused on the aggressive and exploding vengeance of male characters, <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance> looks at ways of finding her own solution for her anger. Also, while <Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance> centered around 'Abduction' and <Oldboy> 'Confinement', <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance> focuses on 'Atonement'.

>>> About the Director

Internationally acclaimed and enthusiastically embraced, Park Chan Wook has raised the bar for the entire Korean film industry to a new level

While studying philosophy at Sogang University, Park Chan Wook discovered Alfred Hitchcock and soon fell in love with movies. While his debut film, The Moon Is…the Sun's Dream, in 1992, and his second film, A Trio, in 1997, were not commercially successful, they did attract some attention from the critics who saw Park's potential.

After contributing to several screenplays and helping out in production, Park exploded onto Korea's cinematic scene with his 2000 film JSA: Joint Security Area. JSA's mix of drama, action, and tension, about the dividing line between North and South Korea, sold an astonishing 5.8 million tickets, making it the highest-grossing film ever in Korea at the time. Park was quickly recognized as a top talent, receiving many prizes at all of Korea's film awards, as well as a special jury prize at the Seattle International Film Festival.

After JSA, Park explored a hardboiled tale, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. That movie shocked and awed film critics around the world, furthering Park's growing reputation. His next vengeance-themed film, Oldboy (2003), finally brought together popular and critical success. The story of a man imprisoned for 15 years without knowing why or by whom, then set loose to seek his revenge, swept the Korean awards programs and ultimately took the Grand Prix at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2004.

Director Park is acknowledged worldwide for his unique topics and style and is now ready to amaze the world once again with his latest film, SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE.

>>> Synopsis

All she wanted was a peaceful life…

- Geum-ja

Geum-ja (Lee Young-ae), a beautiful girl who cannot help but draw attention of all the men around her, was first introduced to the public as the one responsible for the abduction and murder of a little boy at the age of twenty. Being so young and pretty, her horrific crime drew national media attention.

But now, 13 years have passed and in that time, Geum-ja has been the most hardworking and model prisoner, earning the nickname "sweet" Geum-ja.

"Sweet" Geum-ja, however, has not been idle during her time in prison. For 13 years, she plotted revenge against her former teacher, Mr. Baek (Choi Min-sik). Her kindness while in "the joint" has paid off and has now gained many friends and allies. Now that Geum-ja is getting out of jail, she is ready to put her carefully conceived plan into action.

What happened between Geum-ja and her teacher 13 years ago? Why does she want revenge? And how will her quest for vengeance end? These are the mysteries of SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE.

>>> Cast

Lee Young-ae, starring as Lee Geum-ja

One of Korea's sweetest actresses takes on a challenging role, overturning her image, as she stars as an angel of vengeance

Lee Young-ae is loved by fans all over Asia for her popular roles on television and the big screen, featuring her clean, beautiful image and confident manner.

Lee Young-ae gained her reputation as an actress in JSA (2000), starring as an intelligent and analytical military investigator. Then, in One Fine Spring Day, directed by Hur Jin-ho, she played an attractive but selfish divorcee, who showcases her special charms and nuanced acting. In 2003, she starred as the cheerful and strong character Jang-geum in the hit TV drama The Jewel in the Palace, which recorded the highest ratings for that year.

For SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE, Lee Young-ae changes her image dramatically. Her character, Geum-ja, takes the heat for another person's crimes and goes to jail for 13 years. Behind her pleasant smile, lies a painstaking calculation for revenge. Lee Young-ae was fascinated by the character Geum-ja, and studied very hard to create this mysterious figure.

FILMOGRAPHY

Choi Min-sik, as Teacher Baek

Choi, starring as Geum-ja's teacher and one of Korea's most acclaimed actors, brings a frightening force to this vital supporting role.

As an unscrupulous, two-faced person, he is the object of Geum-ja's revenge. He is the focus of Geum-ja's rage when she emerges from prison, after 13 years of bitterly meditating on what he did to her.

Choi Min-sik has become one of Korea's most well-known actors for his long string of diverse and memorable roles. Some films include the gangster who is nearly redeemed by a woman he never met (Failan), Korea's greatest painter of the Joseon Dynasty (Chihwaseon), and a man mysteriously imprisoned for 15 years without explanation (Oldboy). Fascinated by the character of Mr. Baek, Choi decided to take on the pivotal supporting role. This is also the first time Choi has played a full-fledged villain, and audiences are curious to see how the manic actor will handle this character.

FILMOGRAPHY

Oh Dal-soo, as Mr. Chang.

He is the teacher who taught Geum-ja the skills as a baker, in prison. He is very impressed with her wonderful skills at turning poor ingredients into a cake fit for a king, and employs her at his bakery when she is released.

Oh is a veteran actor in stage plays. He first stepped into acting when he was a university student, after visiting a small theater on a delivery job. He made his debut in <Bet on my Disco> and also appeared in <Oldboy> as the man who gets his teeth pulled out.

FILMOGRAPHY

Kim Shee-hoo, as Geun-shik

Geun-shik, a naive 20-year-old boy working at Mr. Chang's bakery, falls in love with Geum-ja at first sight. He is always by Geum-ja's side and tries to provide a haven for the woman in her sorrow and pain.

Making his first debut in a feature film, this 19-year-old Kim has received a lot of public interest merely for playing opposite Lee Young-ae. In <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance>, he has flawlessly performed the role of a 20-year-old youth who falls in love with beautiful yet mysterious Geum-ja.

Lee Seung-shin, as Park Yi-jeong

Park Yi-jeong, an inmate who was the closest to Lee Geum-ja, assists Geum-ja with her revenge in a way no one could ever imagine.

Lee Seung-shin made her debut on TV, with her androgynous and intellectual look, and appeared in many dramas, showing her characteristic traits. She appeared in Director Park's previous film, <Oldboy>, as a hypnotist, and left a strong impression on the screen.

FILMOGRAPHY

Kim Boo-seon, as Woo So-young

Woo So-young, who receives a kidney transplant from Geum-ja in prison, owes her second chance at life to Geum-ja. For this, Woo, with help from her husband, builds a custom-made piece on Geum-ja's special request.

Kim is an actress who enjoyed success in the 80's with <Madam Aema>. In 2004, she appeared in <'Maljuk' School> as a middle-aged woman, seducing Kwon Sang-woo (playing a high-school kid).

>>> Staff

Production Design: Cho Hwa-seong

Cho is a renowned Art Director, famous for bringing out the true feelings of movies to the fullest and being sensuous at the same time. He has worked with Director Park before <Three… Extremes> and when Park assigned him the task of Production Design on <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance>, Park left him with one comment... to go with a natural look.

Instead of a detailed look on sets, as in previous projects, he has opted to go with more ordinary surroundings in <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance>. However, the changing status of Geum-ja's mentality was expressed through the use of color and depth of space. If <Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance> pointed out the realism and <Oldboy> the fantasy, the psychological space of Geum-ja was successfully expressed through the hands of the Art Director in <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance>.

FILMOGRAPHY

Music: Cho Young-wuk

From classical music to popular songs, from psychedelic to punk, Cho Young-wuk is famous for his enveloping soundtracks. He has worked with director Park Chan Wook in the past, on JSA and Oldboy, but his music for SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE is different than anything he has done before. Unlike Oldboy, whose music focused on the chase and revenge with mid-low tones and a macho atmosphere, SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGENACE will be filled with higher tones and a more feminine atmosphere.

FILMOGRAPHY

Director of Photography: Chung Chung-hoon

Chung Chung-hoon won praise for his dynamic and sensual visuals and action on Oldboy. In SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE, he emphasizes the natural change of colors, connecting the colors to the flow of the story, as well as the use of close-ups and tight camerawork. This technique of shooting requires technical skills based on the Digital Intermediate Color Correction, which should be carefully calculated beforehand. With this style and technique of photography, audiences can closely trace the scenes as if they were witnessing the characters in reality.

FILMOGRAPHY

Lighting: Park Hyun-won

Park Hyun-won has worked on over 20 films, including many of the biggest in recent Korean movie history. He has already made two films with director Park Chan Wook, and he is acknowledged for being able to catch the filmmaker's exact intentions. He used dark and wet lighting for Oldboy, but for SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE he has chosen soft and warm colors.

FILMOGRAPHY

Costumes: Cho Sang-kyoung

SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE is the third film that Cho Sang-kyoung has worked on with director Park Chan Wook. "Geum-ja likes pretty things and anything she touches becomes pretty," says Cho in explaining his costumes for the film. Various kinds of colors appear throughout the film, and black is especially important. With different tones of black appearing when Geum-ja approaches her moments of revenge, color if vital to conveying the feeling of the film.
