Story

瑪莉深愛著結婚12載的丈夫和已經兩歲的兒子，家庭生活看似美滿又安穩。丈夫很想有第二個孩子，只是瑪莉自己也不明白為何總是猶豫不決。瑪莉的工作是上門推銷百科全書。某天早上，她遇到一名奇怪的客人: 美國黑人男子標爾。他不諳法語，獨自住在別墅裡，而且足不出戶。初時瑪莉覺得他很討厭，但逐漸對他產生了好感，每每在他家逗留。最終她按捺不住，主動與他發生性關係。自此，瑪莉像被自己的心魔、慾念吞沒了。她不能自己，丈夫跟本無法滿足她。與標爾經過多輪激戰，瑪莉遍體痕印。她既沒有故意遮蓋痕跡亦無半點悔意，她讓丈夫去揭發她的不貞。她放棄了過去的信念，對她所愛的家人做了最令人痛心的決定，她必須面對一切後果。

Short version

- 影片的意念哪儿來的?

我常常閒逛巴黎的大街小巷、在公車裏、在麵包店內、我總會看到許許多多的面孔、我尤其愛挑女的來看。我常常跟自己講，希望有一天，我可以談談一個女人的故事。她有古典的外貌，但卻屬於不受注意的一類人，因為她矜持，臉上沒掛太多表情。可漸漸、她走出了生活的常軌、不能自己。這女人，幹嗎竟放棄過去的信念，偏要走一條不安穩的道路。我想講這故事，探進她內心深處。開始時，我腦海沒有太多主意，有的只是一些感覺，但我寫呀寫，便發現樂在其中。

你怎樣找到女主角安妮郭珊的? 她很了不起。

為了這個角色，我試鏡試了很多，見了不下八十個演員。縱使有不少裸露鏡頭，但很多人仍躍躍欲試，因為演的是35、6歲的女人，又有很大的發揮空間，對那個年紀的女演員來說，這樣的機會著實不多。沒騙你，我對安妮是?一見鍾情 ?的，一看到她，便覺得她就是戲中人。我們要矜持，她可以交得出，我們要她有內涵，有瑪莉的聰穎，以及那種冷漠的暴力，她都一一辦到。監製最初希望我能找一個較出名的，我就想，這演員最好不要有甚麼形象的，沒演出經驗的應該更可靠，別人容易認同她。

Exploring the animal instincts of female desire and the changing attitude of modern women towards their own sexuality

Story

Marie is an encyclopaedia saleswoman and a wife and mother. She is good at her job and enjoys what seems to be a fairly normal home life with her husband and their young son. Her husband wants a second child but she is not sure. It's this uncertainty that actually reveals the crack in her slightly routine but apparently happy existence, not because she may only want one child but because of the underlying reasons for her doubts. Then she meets Bill, a confident, laid back, black American whose mysterious demeanour stimulates Marie's curiosity. She initiates a torrid affair with Bill finding that she wants something more than she is getting at home. After a session of particularly rough sex she finds her body so marked that she can no longer hide her affair. Now she must face her husband and decide what course her life will take. LE SECRET is a film that attempts to explore Marie's mind and reveal her true desires, previously masked by her home life with her husband and child. This could be seen as a woman prepared to take risks and make her own decisions. It could also be seen as a woman whose cold behaviour, is selfish and irresponsible towards her husband and child and who's 'hard as nails' character has been lurking beneath the surface waiting for the opportunity to break out. Bill her lover clearly sees right through her from the start and simply enjoys the opportunity. The abundance of sex scenes on screen serve to illustrate what is on Marie's mind as she switches back and forth from her husband to her extra-marital sex partner but it's really secondary to the ideas that come across as the real theme of the film - what's deep in Marie's mind and the course she wants her life to take. Marie makes decisions that are destructive and hurtful to the family she is supposed to love.

Short version

Marie enjoys what seems to be a fairly normal home life with her husband and their young son. Then she meets Bill a black American, she initiates a torrid affair with him finding that she wants something more than she is getting at home. Now she must face her husband and make decisions that are destructive and hurtful to the family she is supposed to love.

- How did the idea for Le Secret came about?

I often stroll around the streets of Paris, on buses or at the bakeries. I look at a lot of faces, that of women in particular. I've always said to myself that one day I would tell the story of a woman with a traditional appearances, hardly noticeable, conservative even and who would driven by desire, gradually move away from her comfortable life towards a territory of discomfort and darkness. I want to be closest to that, this interiority there. I started from very few things in fact, and I have much pleasure in writing it, even if at the beginning, the idea was all about a feeling.

- How did you find Anne Coesens, your actress, who is rather incredible?

I had a large casting, I saw more than 80 actresses for this role. In spite of the nude scenes, it attracted a lot of response because it is a character of a woman, 35-56 years, with significant paddle and there are not many roles like that, for actresses of this age. When I saw Anne, immediately, I felt that she is the character, she has the reserve, interiority, the wise side of Marie and at the same time a gracefulness in her way of moving. My producer would have preferred that I have someone a little more known but Anne is all the more credible since she does not transport the image of an actress. The audience will be able to identify with this girl much more easily than if the character had been played by Sardrine Bonnaire, Isabelle Huppert or Emmanuelle Beart.
