After being abandoned by her husband twelve years earlier, Jen (Sylvia Chang; "Eat Drink Man Woman", "The Red Violin." Best Actress of Hong Kong Film Awards 2002 - "Forever and Ever"), raised her three sons alone. She uses her mother's secret Hainan Chicken Rice recipe and opened a restaurant to support the family. Her two older sons, Daniel and Harry are gay, as a woman with traditional values, Jen is fretful that she would have no grandchildren, if Leo, too, turns out to be gay. Together she and best friend, Kim Chui (Martin Yan; famous Chinese cuisine TV Chef "Yan Can Cook") device a plan to keep Leo straight by bringing in a French exchange student to live with them. She is Leo's age and her name is Sabine. Leo develops a strange but intriguing relationship with her, which greatly pleases Jen. However, things begin to crumble for her again when Kim Chui becomes "the toast of the town" with his invention of a new dish deeply challenging her Chicken Rice. Kim Chui becomes a national celebrity overnight, and Jen's self-esteem is threatened. Finally, their conflicts come to a head when Jen participates in a cooking contest with Kim Chui and other chefs from Singapore. Food unexpectedly becomes a medium that not only nourishes their bodies but also opens their hearts¡K ¾Éºtªº¸Ü ±q¤@¶}©l¡A§Ú´N·Q§e²{¤@Ó»P§O¤£¦Pªº¨È¬w¹q¼v¥@¬É¡C¦b³oÓ¦h¼h±ªº¥@¬ÉùØ¡A ¤£¦P®É¥N»P¤å¤Æ¤§¶¡ªº»ùÈÆ[©¼¦¹½Ä¬ð¡A¤]¤¬¬Û¨ó½Õ¡C ªí±¤W³o³¡¹q¼vªº¥D½u¬O¦bÁ¿¤@ӶDzΪº¤¤°ê¥À¿Ë¡A¹ï¦o¤TÓ¨à¤l©Ê¶É¦VªºÃö¤Á¡A¨ä§ó²`¼hªº·N¸q«o¬O·Qn¶}±Ò§Ú̫ʳ¬ªº¤ßÆF¡A´M¨D§ó¼sÁ諸µø³¥¡A§K³Q¥@¬É¤¤³\¦hªºº¾¨Æ§Ú̪º«ä·Q©M±¡·P¡C·í¼@¤¤ªk°ê¤k«Ä§i¶D¬Ã-¼@¤¤ªº¥À¿Ë¡A¬~Áy¬Ö¤U¤ô¬yªºÁ³±Ûª¬»Pªk°êªº¤£¦P®É¡A¬Ã§Y·L§®¦a·PÀ³¨ì¦Û¤v¤¶¥G¦s¦b»P°g¥¢¤§¶¡¨ºªÑÁôÂæb¦t©z¶¡ªº¯«¯µ¤O¶q¡C ¬Ã¬O³o³¡¹q¼vªº®Ö¤ß¡A®i²{¤@Ó²{¥N¥À©Êªº«i®ð¡C¦o«Ü³æ¯Â«o¤S¥Rº¡½ÆÂøªº±¡ºü¡C¦oªº°í§Ô¤]¤£§é¤£¦©¥NªíµÛ¥þ¥@¬É¥À¿Ë¡C¦b»s§@³o³¡¹q¼vªº¹Lµ{¤¤¡A§Ú±q³oÓ¤Hª«¬Ã¡B¤k¥D¨¤±i¦ã¹Å¡B¥H¤Î»s¤ù¨¤W¡A·P¨ü¨ì³oªÑ¤O¶q¨Ã²`¨ü±Òµo¡C±¹ï¨Æ±¡®É¡A¤k©Ê¬O¥i¥H«i©¹ª½«e¡B°í«ù¨ì©³ªº¡C ¦b¤¤°ê®a®x·§©ÀùØ¡A¤@¹yÀ\¬O®a¤H¬Û»Eªº®É¥ú¡A¤]¬O¤j®a©¼¦¹±¹ïªº®É¨è¡C¦b¡m®ü«nÂû¶º¡n¤¤¡A¹ª«¤£¦A¥u¬O·Å¹¡ªº¤u¨ã¡A¥¦¤]¦P®É±À¶i¤F§Ú̪º±¡·P¡C¦p¶ø´µ¥d«Â¼w©Ò»¡¡A¡u¤@¹yÂײ±±ßÀ\¤§«á¡A§A«K¥i¥H¼e®¤¥ô¦ó¤H¡A¬Æ¦Ü¡A¥]¬A¦Û¤vªº¿Ë¤H¡v¡C DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT From the onset, I wanted to present an Asian world that is not commonly seen in Asian cinema. A world that is multi-faceted and multi-layered where values between generations and cultures collide but also where understanding meets. If the melody of the rhapsody is a traditional Chinese mother dealing with her three sons' sexuality then the bass line is the progression of discovery on the narrowness of our minds. The world is a great place with many things to occupy our thoughts and emotions. When the French girl tells Jen, the mother, about how the water spirals down the basin differently in France, the mother subtly feels the hidden power of the universe that exists in her presence and her own ignorance. It is the beginning of her discovery. Jen is the heartbeat of the film, a contemporary Mother Courage. She is simple yet full of complex emotions. Her resilience is the resilience of a million mothers around the world. In writing and making the film, I have found this strength tangible and inspiring for it would surface from the character, the actress, as well as the producer. This female strength of facing things head on permeated into the film. Food is the central symbol for a Chinese family. Dinner is where a family gathers for a brief moment and it is a place where they are forced to face each other. In "Rice Rhapsody," food not only serves as something that makes us grow physically, it transcends its function and makes us grow emotionally. As Oscar Wilde said, "After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one's own relatives." ºtû¤Î¹õ«á²¤¶ ²¦°ê´¼ - ½s¼@/¾Éºt ²¦°ê´¼²¦·~©ó¥[®³¤j¥¬¬¥§J¤j¾ÇÀ¸¼@/¹q¼v¨t¡C¥L¦b»´ä©M¥[®³¤j¨â¦a°Ñ»P¹L³\¦h»R¥x¤Î¹q¼v½s¼@¡Bºtû¥H¤Î¾Éºtµ¥¤u§@¡C1992¦~¡A¥L¥H¥[®³¤j¼s¼½¹q¥x¼s¼½¼@"Rice Krinkles"Àò±o¦hÛ¦h¯S§O°^Äm¼ú¡C 1995¦~¡A²¦°ê´¼Àò±o»´ä¦W¾Éºt¤Î»s¤ù®õ}ù»«ªº«C·ý¡A±ÀÂË¥L¦b¹q¼v"»¦¿ªá¤ë©]"¤¤¾á¥ôºtû¡B½s¼@¡B©M°Å±µµ¥¤£¦P¼h±ªº¤u§@¡A³o¤]¬O²¦°ê´¼º¦¸ÅD¤W¤j»È¹õ¡C°£¤F¾Ö¦³Â×´Iªº¹qµø¹q¼v½s¼@¸gÅç¡AÅý²¦°ê´¼§ó¦Û»¨ªº¡A¬O¥L¦b°õ¾Éµ¼Ö¿ý¼v±a¡A¥H¤Î±N¸g¨å»R¥x¼@¡m¹p«B¡n§ï½s¦¨¬°¹q¼vªº»s§@¦¨´N¡C 1998¦~¡A²¦°ê´¼©Mº¦¸°õ¾É¹q¼vªº³¯½÷¦@¦P»s§@¡mµL°Ý®Èµ{¡n¡A ¨Ã¤J¿ï1999¦~¬fªL¼v®i¡C¦P¦~¥L¥H³¯ªGªº¹q¼v¡m¥h¦~·Ïªá¯S§O¦h¡n¤J³ò»´ä¹q¼vª÷¹³¼ú³Ì¨ÎìµÛµ¼Ö¡A³o³¡¤ù¤]¦b1999¦~¬fªL¼v®i¤J¿ï¥¿¦¡ÄvÁɶµ¥Ø¡C 1999¦~¡A²¦°ê´¼ªº¹q¼v¼@¥»¡m®ü«nÂû¶º¡nºaÀò¥xÆW·s»D§½³Ì¨Î¼@¥»¼ú¡C¦P®É¤]¤J¿ï2000¦~Áú°ê°y¤s¦æ¾Pp¹ºªºÃÙ§U®×¡C ²¦°ê´¼ªº¥t¤@Óªø´Á¦X§@¹Ù¦ñ¬OªLµØ¥þ¡A¦bªLµØ¥þªº¹q¼v¡m¨«¤õÂò¡n¤¤¡A¾á¥ô°Æ¾É©M½s¼@¡C¡m¨«¤õÂò¡n¦b2002¦~»´ä°ê»Ú¹q¼v¸`¦¨¬°¶}¹õ¹q¼v¡A·N¸q«¤j¡A¡m¨«¡n¤ù¦P®É¤J³ò²Ä¤T¤Q¤E©¡ª÷°¨¼ú¡u³Ì¨Î¾Éºt¡v¡B¡u³Ì¨Î½s¼@¡v©M¡u³Ì¨Î¼v¤ù¡vµ¥¤T¶µ¤j¼ú¡C ¡m®ü«nÂû¶º¡n¬O²¦°ê´¼²Ä¤@³¡35Íù¦Ì¹q¼v§@«~¡C KENNETH BI - Writer/Director Kenneth Bi graduated with Honors in Theatre/Film from Brock University in Canada.
