Synopsis
Thou shalt not covet anything that is thy neighbour's…
Falling for the lost shoes…
Sun-jae is an eye-doctor in her early 30's. She lives with her lawyer husband and 6-year-old daughter, Tae-soo. Apparently, she looks like an ordinary housewife in a happy family, but she feels lonely because her husband treats her only as the mother of his daughter. On top of that, Tae-soo loves her father more. So she infatuates in buying shoes, instead.
Tae-soo is a mature girl for her age and loves ballet very much. Yet, she is laughed at by the other girls in her ballet class because she lacks talent.
One day, Sun-jae witnesses her husband's affair. His lover is wearing Sun-jae's favorite blue shoes. A few days later, she takes Tae-soo and leaves her husband. They move to an old run-down apartment in another city where a weird hunchbacked old woman wanders around. Though Tae-soo doesn't like her new home, Sun-jae can't afford a better place since she spent a lot on opening her own clinic.
Meanwhile, Sun-jae meets an interior designer named In-chul, whom she finds uncomfortable to be around. On the way back home, she finds a pair of red shoes in the subway that doesn't seem to belong to anyone. When she brings them home, Tae-soo becomes very interested in them, but Sun-jae pushes her away from her red shoes.
That night, Sun-jae finds Tae-soo standing at her rooftop. Tae-soo cries her eyes out and jumps. Sun-jae grabs her by the ankle but Tae-soo slips out of her hands. All she is holding are sliced ankles of her daughter. Sun-jae screams and opens her eyes. It was a bad dream.
When Sun-jae meets In-chul again, she finds him rather charming with his frank ways. She learns that he's divorced and feels sympathy for him, so she invites him over for dinner. When he sees the shoes Sun-jae has collected, he can't take his eyes off the red shoes. He tells her he wants to see her wearing them.
Obsession over the lost shoes…
Next morning, when Sun-jae wears the red shoes, Tae-soo suddenly takes them away and says she needs to wear them. Sun-jae realizes Tae-soo has been acting strange lately after her ballet has gotten much better all of a sudden. Though she feels uneasy about Tae-soo, Sun-jae goes for work neglecting Tae-soo's actions.
In-chul treats Sun-jae specially when she's wearing the red shoes and their relationship grows deeper. When she comes back home, Tae-soo tries to take the shoes from Sun-jae and claims they are hers. Sun-jae fights back. While the mood gets tense, Sun-jae's friend Mi-hee visits, and Mi-hee instantly falls for the shoes and take them away.
Mi-hee feels dazzled with the shoes on. But she begins to hear the sound of footsteps following her. Suddenly a hand comes out of nowhere and grabs panicked Mi-hee by her face. Then, the hand forks her eye-balls with its fingers and throws her to the window. A dangling piece of glass falls into her legs to cut off her ankles.
The shadow of death surrounds the red shoes…
Sun-jae has suffered from hallucinations ever since she picked up the shoes from the subway. In her hallucinations, she always sees a dancer, her lover, and another jealous girl around them.
When Sun-jae goes to the police station after confirming Mi-hee's corpse, the police told her that a high-school girl was also killed in the same way with Mi-hee. In-chul, accompanying her, also learns that Sun-jae is still married. He is shocked as she had told him of her divorce.
When she comes home, Sun-jae finds Tae-soo holding the red shoes. Scared, she takes them and goes out to throw them away when she runs into the hunchbacked old lady. The old lady freaks out seeing the red shoes. Sun-jae throws the shoes away, and comes back to her house only to find Tae-soo dancing in front of her father wearing the red shoes.
In a while, Tae-soo collapses bleeding hard, and Sun-jae, overwhelmed by the shock, also loses conscience.
The curse kept inside the red shoes
The shoes, Mi-hee's death, Tae-soo's accident, and the girl in Sun-jae's hallucinations. Sun-jae thinks all these are related to the red shoes. She begins her research to find out what's behind the red shoes with In-chul. She talks with the dead high school girl's friend, and finds out that whoever tries to take the red shoes from the original finder, they are brutally killed with their ankles sliced-off. Sun-jae starts to worry about Tae-soo's life.
In-chul tells Sun-jae that he has seen a girl in the red shoes in an advertisement shown all around the city. They learn that photo was taken in 1944, and the place is near Sun-jae's apartment.
At the ad agency, they find out that the girl's name is Oki. 50 years ago at a dance company, Oki dances elegantly in the red shoes. The company's head Ha-sub treats her dearly. And another ballerina Keiko sees the two lovers in a fiery jealousy. One day, following a noise, Oki discovers Keiko and Ha-sub make love. Too surprised to control her self, Oki tumbles down the stairs. When Ha-sub runs down to help Oki, jealous Keiko knocks him down with a candle stick. Then Keiko pierces Oki over and over again. In that rainy night, Ha-sub and Keiko dig up a hole in the forest to bury Oki. When Keiko can't take off the red shoes from Oki's feet, she starts to chop the ankles with an axe.
On the opening night after the successful show, Ha-sub and Keiko hold a wedding ceremony on stage. Oki's red shoes seem distinguished on Keiko's feet, compared to her white wedding gown. Looking down proudly at her feet, Keiko sees blood smear on the red shoes. Suddenly Keiko starts to dance as the red shoes drag her body against her will, and Ha-sub tries to help and hold Keiko to stop the dance. At that moment, a thick rope on the ground crawls up to wrap their bodies and whisks them up in the air. Blood drips from their strangled necks, and the red shoes fall to the ground covered with white petals of cherry blossom.
The curse reveals itself..
Back at the present, Sun-jae and Tae-soo cremate Oki's bones to console her soul. Sun-jae hopes that Oki's grudge would be resolved and Tae-soo will not be harmed.
On the opening day of her clinic, Sun-jae finds another woman goes out of In-chul's house. In-chul says he cheated on her because he is angry with her dishonesty. And he hands her over a blue shoe her husband's lover was wearing during the affair. In-chul told her Tae-soo gave it to him, and Sun-jae heads home to ask Tae-soo about the shoe. Alarmed by her mother's fierce questions, Tae-soo runs away into a subway station. Chasing Tae-soo to the dark corridor, Sun-jae finally meets the substance of the horror carried through the red shoes. The curse behind the red shoes springs to life.
Story Background
Picking up something trivial by coincidence...
A trifling act produces a terrifying outcome!
There once was a pretty red ribbon. On it was the suggestive writing, "You will come upon an unexpected opportunity that will make all things possible." But the talisman-like piece suddenly changes into an object of fear. That's because it's hard to tell what actually lies behind this unclaimed ribbon. Maybe to fulfill any of our wishes it would mean selling our soul to the devil or paying something huge in return.
The movie, "The Red Shoes," starts off on this very point. The film's producer one day picked up a ribbon with this writing off the street. Although he was excited about picking up the ribbon, most of his acquaintances who heard the story were rather frightened. Some think that picking up something strange that was thrown away by someone is a sort of taboo. But despite being scared, he thought of the desire that made him pick up the ribbon, and Hans Christian Andersen's sad yet terrifying fairy tale, "The Red Shoes," popped up in his head. The tale is about a girl who gets her ankles chopped off because of her unstoppable desire to wear the red shoes. In a chilling story hidden in a beautiful fairy tale, horror was discovered.
This is how the brutal fairy tale, "The Red Shoes," was born.
About The Movie
Brutal fairy tale, "The Red Shoes"
Andersen's fairy tale comes back to life in a Korean horror flick
Andersen's fairy tale, "The Red Shoes," is reborn in the most frightening and terrifying horror movie of 2005. Andersen's fairy tale, a story about a girl who has her feet cut off, is reinterpreted in the film "The Red Shoes" by combining Andersen's tale with a ghost story.
A girl died because everything was taken away from her by others' greed, and her soul is carried in a pair of red shoes. Anyone who desires these shoes will face a curse and their ankles will be sliced off. A grudge-filled ghost, shoes possessed by it, and a curse that infects all through these shoes transform a sad yet beautiful Western fairy tale into a ghastly and grueling Eastern horror.
What causes the girl in Andersen's tale to have her feet cut off is the greed for the red shoes. And like the fairy tale, in "The Red Shoes," the red shoes stimulate the greed that lies hidden in people's minds and normally unrevealing. Anyone who sees the red shoes uses whatever means to bring them into their possession. And through these shoes, their repressed greed comes out in the open. The red shoes of course stimulates the greed of the main character, Sun-jae, who wants to be acknowledged as a woman, and even stimulates the greed of her 6-year old daughter, Tae-soo, to become a good dancer. However, these desires condemn them through the curse of the vengeful ghost.
Production Note
Cinematography of "The Red Shoes"
The emotions that are captured through handheld camera work are brought on to screen with a 2.35:1 ratio...
"The Red Shoes" was shot by handheld camera work which hasn't been often used in horror flicks and was then brought to a wide screen ratio of 2.35:1. The reason handhelds were used frequently as the camera work is clear - to freshly deliver the characters' explosive emotions stemming from their desires and the fear of the unknown. This is different from how most horror films commonly deliver fright through the effects of editing. Thus the explosive emotions and tension in this movie are so much more powerful. To further enhance this effect, the film was processed through a digital color correction technique and a 'bridge by-pass' film developing process which holds much of the silver particles on film to produce rough images and a low color tone.
What's more, by applying a 2.35:1 screen ratio in "The Red Shoes," which is rare for a horror film, it enabled an effect where the characters' fears were maximized by using the dark spaces on the screen. Before this technique was tried out, there were many worries over it being too risky, but since a realistic fright is captured well through the dark spaces on screen, it was impossible to produce this effect on a normal screen ratio of 1.85:1. So "The Red Shoes," a novel horror movie shown on a wide screen, is made with a visual quality that's surely different compared to conventional horror movies.
Production Design of "The Red Shoes"
Feel the horror that's made from the aesthetics of disharmony!
Greed and sadness, beauty and fear co-exist...
To describe the production design in "The Red Shoes" in a few words, it would be "The extreme aesthetics of disharmony." This principle is applied as the basis to the movie's color and space. First, like it appears in the title, red is the symbolic color of the movie but what actually dominates the movie is a blue tone and a strong black and white contrast. The color red, which symbolizes temptation and desire, is projected as being beautiful in this story but it is also appears as a dangerous color when thick gushing blood suddenly overpowers the screen. Although a blue color takes over most of the screen and it is a dreary color that includes a mixture of tension, sadness, and repression, it contrasts the suddenly erupting feelings of desire.
The concept of the collision and harmony of these different colors is repeated once more in the space. As the main stage of this story takes place in Sun-jae's old and dark studio, when you come across her spectacular shoe display rack which doesn't seem to suit the place, the space cannot be described by just one adjective like beautiful or horrifying but instead embodies the aesthetics of discord. When you see the beautiful mural on the wall of In-chul's cold and dreary studio, or the red shoes waiting in the bluely lit empty passenger cart of the underground subway, feelings like these repeat constantly in the movie. The aesthetics of discord where horror and beauty co-exist is one good reason to expect an absolutely new kind of horror movie, "The Red Shoes."
Music of "The Red Shoes"
Fear seen first through the ears! The eeriness of a beautiful scene, the lyricism of a terrifying scene are all embodied.
The most important element that comes with the scary visuals of a horror movie is the music. During the production of "The Red Shoes," famous composer, LEE Byung-woo was scouted out to add to the horror effect. He is a profound music composer of all genres in the Korean movie scenes and also famous for being a guitarist who freely plays electric, acoustic and classic guitars. His music for movies is indeed extraordinary. He makes us feel the lyrical and beautiful sensibility that overrides in "My Beautiful Girl, Mari" and the sad and beautiful horror encompassed in "A Tale of Two Sisters." He brings the best out in any genre and raises the merits of each film. This gives another sure reason to expect a great deal from "The Red Shoes." As the eerie music plays even in tranquil scenes and lyrical music plays in the frightening ones to intensify the scare, it will be a brand-new auditory experience for any horror fan.
Dance of "The Red Shoes"
A beautiful and sad dance will uncover the ghost of the red shoes! The attractiveness of the red shoes and the ghost's story shown at one glance...
In "The Red Shoes," there's a flashback where the real story behind the red shoes comes to life. Even though these scenes only take five minutes out of the movie, it required the utmost attention since it must signify the red shoes' fatal attraction and the ghost's story. The filmmakers found a solution to this by expressing it through dance. And Korea's most prolific dance choreographer HONG Sung-yop, who could compete on the world stage, was chosen to design the movements. He put all his energy into presenting the film's story in the most effective and appealing manner together with his dance troupe, "Dance Theatre ON." Like the passionate group dance in the end which was incorporated from his work, "Blood in Horses' Eyes," or the solo dance of the girl who will turn into a ghost and even the eerie dance by another envious girl who steals the red shoes, anyone who sees HONG Sung-yop's dance choreography will be swept off their feet. Just with the praise for HONG Sung-yop's direction of unique movements, backed up by an elegant and unconventional sensibility, is plenty to feel more than your money's worth when you watch the "The Red Shoes."
Movie Trivia
Are the red shoes in "The Red Shoes" disposables?
Red shoes, which were specifically created for the movie "The Red Shoes," should not be too classic or too modern because they contain an age-long grudge. The shoes also should stir up the desire to possess them in the minds of anyone who sees them, so the shoes are as an important character as real actors of the movie. The red shoes seem the same all throughout the movie, but the shoes must fit all of the female characters, and the crew also considered making spare pairs as some of them got dirty by blood stains during the shooting. So there were total 40 pairs of red shoes. That was the number of the pairs the crew achieved in bringing down - by rubbing or washing the shoes all the time.

Director
KIM Yong-gyun
"Talking about people's desires using the extreme mechanics of a horror film"
The movie, "The Red Shoes," talks about people's desires. People consider desire to be the driving force of human life, but they don't recognize it well enough because it lies hidden in the unconsciousness. Like when the human substance comes out in the open in extreme situations, "The Red Shoes" will reveal the hidden desire that lies deep inside the unconscious by using the extreme mechanics of a horror film. Especially through the red shoes which symbolize the completion of femininity, I would like to paint in detail how desire takes people to the extremes, as far as risking their own lives.
