MY BROTHER

Starring WON, Bin & SHIN Ha-Kyun

CJ Entertainment presents

A Zininsa Ltd. Film Production

Director: Ahn Gwon-tae

ABOUT STORY

Whether you love him or hate him, He is still your brother
The time is the late 1990s. The place: a high school.
Two brothers, despite being a year apart in age, are in the same class

The younger brother, Jong-hyeon (Won Bin) is a good-looking, class-A fighter.

The older brother, Seong-hyeon (Shin Ha-gyun) is unbelievably tender and pure, a class-A student.

They've been fighting, nearly non-stop for 17 years. Trouble began when their mother (Kim Hae-suk) favored Seong-hyeon over his younger brother. Round 2 began when both brothers fell for the same girl, the most beautiful girl in the neighborhood, Mi-ryeong (Lee Bo-yeong).

When the long-simmering emotions finally explode and a huge fight breaks out, Seong-hyeon tells his younger brother something he had never been able to say before: "Jong-hyeon, would you call me hyeong just once? I've never heard it before from you..."

"Hyeong" - the word that younger Korea brothers call their older brothers. And yet Jong-hyeon has never said it to his brother.

An older brother who feels sorry for his younger brother... Jealous over his rivalry for the same girl, embarrassed over the unequal treatments he received from his mother, but Seong-hyeon still longs for a close relationship with his younger brother.

But still Jong-hyun never calls his older brother hyeong...

PRODUCTION NOTE

Who is the most important person in your life?

Some things in life you are just born with. They can never be changed. There are relationships and bonds that no one asks for, and yet they are with us forever. We're talking about family. Family members can seem like a huge burden at times, but there comes a point in your life when you realize that your family has shaped who you are and what you believe. The people you thought would hold you back were the ones who supported you. They were the ones who waited for you outside in the pouring rain, holding an umbrella so you would not get wet. They were the ones who were always there for you.

This is what MY BROTHER is all about. Audiences will be able to reminisce about their own loved ones, the ones who were always there for them. They will be able to think about how much their family members really mean to them. And they will be able to think about how our loved ones deserve so much more than what we give them...

Why "MY BROTHER" ?

The strength of Korean cinema, MY BROTHER!

-Touching everyone with the feelings we all share

As everyone knows, Korea film is in the middle of an unprecedented boom these days. Almost every year, new films blow away the once-insurmountable box office records of yesterday. Of course, there are many reasons for this success - the rise of the multiplex, growing audiences, improved equipment, better marketing. But the most important factor is undoubtedly the rise in the quality of the movies themselves. In particular, Korean films have grown extremely skilled at appealing to universal emotions, at tapping into the deepest feelings of the widest spectrum of people.

These universal emotions can change the world, and their power is on display for all to see in MY BROTHER - it's about the competition between siblings, the unexpected surprises of life, and the ever-changing emotions that lay between parents and children. Why is it that we never allow others to talk coarsely about our parents and our siblings even though we do it all the time? Probably because, even though our families drive us crazy from time to time, they still remain the last and truest fortress we can escape to and hide in when it really matters.

The conflicts that happen in MY BROTHER take place between two brothers who are constantly competing, whether for their mother's attentions or a girl's affection. One of them has the good looks and the fighting skills, while the other is a top student who is kind to the point of being shy. In addition, MY BROTHER sports two of the hottest actors in Korea today, Won Bin and Shin He-gyun.

Brothers - closer than the closest friends, but also fierce rivals

Especially in Korea, with its Confucian heritage, there are a great many special words and titles for all the siblings in a family - older brother (hyeong), younger brother (nam dongsaeng), older sister (nuna), younger sister (yeo dongsaeng), and many more - all of which indicate where in the family hierarchy each person sits. With those titles and responsibilities come very different feelings for everyone - memories of siblings who "borrowed" clothes without asking, of family favorites who got spoiled, of competition at school for grades, of bullying, of snitching, of just about anything and everything.

Brothers have a relationship that runs between strong competitiveness and blood-bound loyalty. Although brothers are physically closer than friends, since the relation was not chosen, there can also be tension and discomfort in their conflicts. However a brother could never be an enemy. As the old saying goes, blood is thicker than water. There is something unique and special in the relationship between brothers.

In MY BROTHER, a disrespectful younger brother refuses to call his one-year-older brother hyeong, the traditional Korean term for respect for older brothers. But the kind older brother takes tremendous good care of his younger brother, helping him win the goodwill of their mother and the affections of a girl. But in the midst of it all, the strange, complex feelings between them grow.

Character & Cast

Shin Ha-gyun (the older brother Seong-hyeon)

"Since everything in the world has a reason, there is probably a reason why I was born this way."

Seong-hyeon is the top student in the whole school, a loving son, and caring brother. His mother loves him more than anything in the world, and the way to repay her kindness would be to become a doctor, as his mother so desperately wishes, to live as a kind person, and to take care of his younger brother. But he still has one small wish... to be called hyeong by his younger brother, just once.

"A good screenplay and I liked the director's intentions. And what I liked most about the film was that it was so heart warming."

An actor whose name is proudly among the best in Korea's film industry, Shin Ha-gyun has proved his versatility with the diverse roles he's played, from a shy soldier in the blockbuster Joint Security Area (2000) to the alien obsessed young man of Save the Green Planet (2003) to the good-hearted kidnapper of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002).

Filmography:

MY BROTHER - a chat with Shin Ha-gyun!

What type of movie is MY BROTHER?

You can feel the type by the title. By looking at the two different brothers, it makes you realize the importance of the people closest to you.

What were you focusing on most while playing the role of Seong-hyeon?

Although Seong-hyeon has all the qualities of a top student, I did not want that to hold me back from expressing myself. I wanted to change how the typical top student is typically portrayed, and instead portray Seong-hyeon more like a regular person.

Any similarities between Shin Ha-gyun and Seong-hyeon?

I actually do have a younger sister, and even though I try to be kind to her, there are also times when I am not kind and get angry at her. I tried to find the qualities of Seong-hyeon in me and tried to act on those feelings.

What was the most memorable scene while shooting MY BROTHER?

All the scenes have their moments, and I am fond of them. But if I had to pick one, it would be the one scene with Won Bin and I in the alley. We were all up for a week while shooting the rain-soaked scene. It was probably the hardest and most draining for everybody on the crew. But as hard as it was, it was my favorite scene.

What do you think about working with Won Bin?

He's a very good-looking actor, and I am glad that we're friends (laughs). Just as he was in Guns & Talks, he is a very respectful younger brother and his sincerity while acting is something that I want to have. He just works very hard and is very serious about his acting.

What's the best reason people should watch MY BROTHER this fall?

We live close to the people we love, but we're never able to express how we really feel inside. I think that after watching the movie, people will be able to tell their loved ones that they love them. We worked very hard on this film, and I am positive that anyone who watches it will not regret it.

Won Bin (the younger brother, Jong-hyeon)

"You get good grades and I fight well¡K"

The best fighter in the high school is Jong-hyeon. A kid who acts before he thinks, dumb Jong-hyeon is famous for his looks and his fighting skills, even at other schools. He has pretty much everything, except for the grades. His brother, however does get the good grades, and because those good grades also made Seong-hyeon his mother's favorite, Jong-hyeon holds a big chip on his shoulder.

"I have always wanted to play the role of Jong-hyeon in MY BROTHER"

Won Bin has successfully made the change from being a pretty boy actor to a man, thanks to his outstanding devotion to the craft of acting. Won Bin says that he always aims to present something new with every role he takes.

Filmography:

MY BROTHER - a chat with Won Bin

What was the reason for choosing MY BROTHER after Taegukgi?

I read the scenario for MY BROTHER while shooting Taegukgi. It reminded me of the great time I had while shooting the TV drama Kkokji. I have always wanted to take a role like that in a movie and Jong-hyeon from MY BROTHER was the perfect part. I was really attracted to the lively character of Jong-hyeon.

Are there similarities between Won Bin and Jong-hyeon?

Jong-hyeon is a comical, rough kid. While acting his role, I naturally thought about my school days when I was also misbehaving and joking around. Of course, I was not the best fighter in school. If there is a difference between Jong-hyeon and Won Bin, it would have to be that I don't seem to have the simplicity and innocence that Jong-hyeon has anymore.

What were you focusing on most while playing the role of Jong-hyeon?

Jong-hyeon has a free and easy-going personality, and that is what I tried to focus on the most. I wanted to act freely, not being bound by any inhibitions. I also focused a lot in speaking in another Korean dialect, which I was doing for the first time in my life.

They say you and Shin Ha-gyun were great working together

I was happy to hear that Ha-gyun was going to be my 'older brother'. He is nice to me now, just as he was when we shot Guns & Talks. I feel like he really is my older brother, and we are similar in that we both quiet and like to play computer games (laughs). After a day of acting, we would go together to an Internet game cafe and play computer games. There is also a lot that can be learned from him as an actor. His improvisation and concentration are really impressive, and his acting has a lot of depth.

How was it to take such a moody role in a movie for the first time?

The moodiness of Jong-hyeon in MY BROTHER comes from a brief, insecure infatuation, like one experiences when you are that age. It was fun to act a pure, heart-beating role. I think it can be more attractive than acting a passionate role.

What's the best thing about MY BROTHER?

MY BROTHER is a film that makes people think again about family love. We worked hard in making this movie, and I believe that it is a good film for everybody. I hope viewers will eagerly anticipate this movie. I think that it will be the most popular movie this fall (laughs).

Kim Hae-suk (Seong-hyeon and Jong-hyeon's mother)

"Next time, if anyone bothers either one of you, beat him up together. That's what a brother should do."

Seong-hyeon and Jong-hyeon's mother seems to have caused her sons' first conflict by favoring Seong-hyeon over his brother. When Jong-hyeon finally tells his mother about his hurt feelings, she tells him her innermost feelings - how strong she thought Jong-hyeon was and how she worried about Seong-hyeo. Although tough and strict on the outside, the truth is that she is a common mother who loves both of her sons very much.

In the TV drama Pearl Necklace, she played an executive who would do anything to help her daughter. In the film Oh! Happy Day (2003), she played a comical mother who showed off her wrestling skills on her own daughter. While in Dead Friend, she was the person who had the key that all the events revolved around. Even as a middle-aged actress, she continues to impress audiences. She really wanted to play the role of the mother of the two brothers, and she played the part flawlessly. While shooting, she was always taking care of everybody, truly being like everyone's mother. Her true value as an actress can be seen in MY BROTHER, through her charisma and personality.

Filmography:

MY BROTHER - a chat with Kim Hae-suk

How does it feel to have two handsome sons?

I was happy to have two reliant and handsome sons at once. I have always liked the idea of Won Bin as a young son since Autumn Tale, and even though I just met Ha-gyun for the first time, he quickly became my eldest son (laughs).

What if you really had a disabled son like Seong-hyeon?

I would be feel the pain and want to do anything for him, taking care of him so he would not get hurt. But instead of letting him do whatever he wants, I think that the right thing to do would be to raise him like the mother does in MY BROTHER - making him strong enough to live in this world.

What are your feelings about MY BROTHER?

I think many of the younger viewers will like the movie because of Ha-gyun and Bin. Even I think they are handsome (laughs). But I would also like to recommend the movie to the mothers out there. I think it is a movie that all mothers will be able to relate to, and it will make you think about many things.

Lee Bo-yeong (Jo Mi-ryeong)

"I'm not a good student or anything... All I have is my pretty face"

In the bus on the way home from school, Seong-hyeon and Jong-hyeon both look at Mi-ryeong as she sits and reads a book, looking beautiful. The two brothers both fall in love with her. Known as the hottest girl in town, Mi-ryeong can be a little arrogant, but she's also straightforward. When she finds out that Jong-hyeon had a crush on her, she goes to his house to give him a love letter.

A main actress since her debut in Baegsu Talchul, she received that highest ratings ever for the play Noh Chun-hyang vs. Ahn Mong-ryong, and became the face for Asiana Airlines. Much like the character she plays in MY BROTHER, each time she appeared on the set, everybody's face seemed to become brighter. Her looks and her acting seem too developed for such a young actress, and this role will only further her reputation.

MY BROTHER - a chat with Lee Bo-yeong

Who is Mi-ryeong to you?

Mi-ryeong is a very pretty girl who can do many different things. I feel fortunate to be able to play a role like this one in my first movie. Mi-ryeong has the strength to live out her dreams and pursue her love. It is through this strength that she is able to go to Jong-hyeong's house to read her poem.

If you really were in a love triangle with two brothers, what would you do?

It would obviously be a difficult situation. I think that I would straighten things out the minute I realized what was going on. Of course, if the brothers were as handsome as Won Bin and Shin Ha-gyun, it would be harder to decide. (laughs).

How do you feel now that you have completed your first movie?

I feel proud of being able to accomplish something. While shooting TV dramas, I was not able to check on my acting, but while filming MY BROTHER, I was able to concentrate more on my acting in detail. This will definitely be an experience I will not forget. I hope that MY BROTHER becomes well accepted by everyone, and I hope some people might find it helpful.

Kim Tae-uk (Tight pants)

"I'll fight you for Mi-ryeong"

His nickname stems from the tight pants he always wears, and whether it is in love or fighting, Tight Pants thinks of himself as Jong-hyeon's rival. That rivalry inevitably extends to Jong-hyeon's girl, Mi-ryeong. Whatever happens, there is going to be a mighty fight to see who will come out on top.

The charisma of comedy is the foundation of Kim Tae-uk's attractiveness. He has already appeared in films such as Friend (2001) and Mutt Boy (2003) as the bad guy. Kim, a college friend of Director Ahn, was the funniest guy on the set, and was he born to be the funniest nemesis in Korean movie history. From a very good action actor to a comical character, Kim is widening his acting range and he still has more to show to audiences.

Filmography:

Jo Jin-ung (Du-sik)

"I like Seong-hyeon!"

Du-sik is a grown up kid with the mental capacity of a 10-year-old. Although naive, he's often acts without thinking of the consequences. He has liked Seong-hyeon since he was a little boy, acting as if Seong-hyeon and his loving mother ere all he needed in the world.

Along with Kim Tae-uk, Jo Jin-ung has been a friend of Director Ahn since their college days. Long vowing to make a movie together, they finally have their chance in MY BROTHER. Although Jo is still relatively unknown in the movie industry, he is a well-regarded actor in the theater world. Always eager to tackle a difficult role, such as someone with a mental disability, Jo threw himself wholeheartedly into this challenge.

Filmography:

Kim Jong-man (Button Hole)

"Man, you look old. Are you really in high school?"

Button Hole is Jong-hyeon's best friend and a guy who knows everything about all the girls in the neighborhood. Although he is always called ugly compared to Jong-hyeon, Button Hole remains loyal to his friend. Button Hole may never seem to take things seriously, but he is a warm friend of Jong-hyeon in times of distress.

Kim Jong-man's acting skills in the theater have been much noted, and even though he seems to be only having fun in the film, he takes matters very seriously while shooting during the sets.

Jung Ho-bin (Yeong-chun)

"Jong-hyeon, is it still in you?"

Yeong-chun is Mi-ryeong's older brother, who grows to like Jong-hyeon for his courage. Yeong-chun saves Jong-hyeon on one occasion, and he tries to turn Jong-hyeon into his type of guy. But Yeong-chun is involved in some shady businesses and does not always have the best intentions.

With a think-lined face and a low, manly voice, Jung Ho-bin has much charisma and has already been seem by many in Friend (2001), Windstruck (2004), and the TV drama All In.

ABOUT FILMMAKERS

Director Ahn Gwon-Tae

"MY BROTHER is how I view the world, it is my future."

In the Korean language, people often use the word "our" to describe their possessions - "our house," "our mother," "our dad" - instead of the word "my." This is probably because instead of forming a boundary between "you" and "I," "our" has more of an "embracing" connotation. The word "our" gives us a sense of unity and a sense of warmth, hence the Korean name of the film, which is literally "Our Brother."

Director Ahn's view of MY BROTHER

"MY BROTHER is a funny movie!"

The funny moments created by a stubborn and hotheaded Jong-hyeon and the touching moments that come from Seong-hyeon's pureness come together to create a picture of everyday life that can make us smile without knowing it.

A movie that comes from the heart!

I believe that MY BROTHER can appeal to everyone because it is a film about people. The laughter that can be found in everyday life and the tears that come after those moments have passed are why this movie can appeal to everyone.

Bright and cheerful visuals!

I wanted to eliminate the feelings of sadness and loneliness that can come with thoughts of family. We tried presenting a different kind of story that uses bright, cheerful visuals to help tell that story. We used wide-open areas, such as the ocean, as the background in order to make the film as bright as possible.

Cinematography - Hwang Gi-seok

His knowledge and abilities

Cinematographer Hwang Gi-seok's work lies somewhere between the smooth yet intense flow of a veteran and the active, creativity of a young cinematographer. This combination brings out the most unique style that marks a Hwang film.

Hwang not only performs the role of the cinematographer well, but he is also known for his rapid adjustments on the fly. Everyone on the crew including the director praises his work and overall contributions to the film, saying that Hwang is needed at all times. Hwang is known for emphasizing the dynamism of the characters in dramas, which makes him an essential part of the production of MY BROTHER. One special quality about Hwang is how he brings out the action while focusing on the actors' sensitive performances. Using multiple cameras, he creates high-quality pictures in fewer takes, saving time and money.

Filmography:

Music Director/ Composer - Kim Hyeong-seok

The power of music in film

One of the most emotionally rich and creative musicians in Korea, Kim Hyeong-seok has written numerous great songs for singers such as Shin Seung-hun, Seong Si-gyeong, and Lim Chang-jeong. Constantly working on material for movies, TV dramas, and musicals, Kim is famous for his choice of movies. As was seen in My Sassy Girl (2001), Kim used Shin Seung-hun's "I Believe" to give the comedy a sad twist.

The music in MY BROTHER combines a calm atmosphere with a bright, cheerful feeling. Singer Park Hyo-sin's voice in the main theme song brings out the strong emotions needed in the film. After watching the rough cut of the movie, Kim new exactly what type of music to compose. He thought that the important part to capture was when the relationship between the two brothers changes from conflict to full-bore explosion. Kim focused creating a soundtrack that could draw in the widest audience possible and to raise the emotional power of the film.

Filmography:

Musicals: Seutaga Duelgoya, Winter Wanderer, Gumiho (in progress)

Lighting - Shin Kyeong-man

Using lights to bring emotions to light

Cinematographer Hwang Gi-seok's main parter, lighting director Shin Kyeong-nam is always in firm control of making everything look just right for the film. Shin's lighting seems to have life of its own, bringing the most out of the conflict between the two brothers and the most out of the good times between them.

Filmography:

Martial Arts Director - Shin Jae-myeong

The beauty of action

A well-known veteran actor with numerous works under his belt, Shin concentrates on creating street fights, with more harsh reality than over-the-top choreography that is so overdone these days. Street fighting is tougher on the actors, but it brings a fresh dynamism to the screen.
