MAÈTATHON

ABOUT MOVIE

The energy of life

<MAÈTATHON> is about an autistic young man who communicates with the world through a marathon, instead of words, and proves his willpower. The film focuses on possibilities and hope rather than on accomplishments. Therefore, the most important part of the film isn't when the main character gets past the finish line after running the 42.195 kilometers, but when he tears himself away from his mom to run in the race. Finding happiness in running itself, the main character couldn't be any more content. The audience will realize that what makes us happy in this harsh, competitive world isn't what we accomplish, but the willpower to do what we dream.

The independence

The autistic son and his mom represent all sons and mothers. In the film, Kyung-sook does everything in her power to create a better life for her autistic son. She hesitates to let go of her son's hand, but her son shakes off her hand and begins his race with the world. This is what makes the film so different from other Korean films that deal with relationship between sons and mothers. It's not about the blind sacrifices parents make for the sake of their children, but about letting them go their own way no matter what difficulties might lie ahead.

The harmony

CHO Seung-woo is a hardworking, young actor with powerful energy. He did a marvelous job playing an autistic man. Taking on the role as mother, KIM Mi-sook is a veteran actress who has entertained us for so many years on both the big and small screen. Other supporting characters spice up the fun of the film.

The miracle of reality

This film is based on a true story of BAE Hyung-jin. His story of completing the marathon was first introduced as a book and later as a TV documentary, which touched the hearts of millions. Among the flood of films based on actual events or people, what this film so uniquely accomplishes is the fact that it's not about a hero who has done our society a great deal of good, but about small miracles taking place in our daily lives. It provides an opportunity for us to look around and appreciate life itself.

The director on the road

CHUNG Yoon-chul joined a marathon club and ran with BAE Hyung-jin, on which the film is based, for a year to write the script. Watching him run beside him, the director was able to feel his passion and love for running. The director's feelings for BAE are well absorbed in the movie.

SYNOPSIS

Cho-won is a lovely, normal-looking child who likes chocolate cookies and zebras. Finding out he is autistic, his mother kneels down before the burden of reality. However, his mother discovers his love for running, and begins to train him.

20 years later, Cho-won's intelligence is still that of a five-year-old boy. He farts everywhere, bows to his younger brother, and dances to music wherever he is. However, his mom dedicates herself to training him to accomplish a 'Sub-3-Hour,' which is completing a marathon below three hours, a dream for amateur runners.

One day, Jung-woo, a former marathon champion comes to work at Cho-won's school to fulfill his community service for a DUI. Cho-won's mother begs him to coach her son. Taking the job unwillingly, he learns to open his heart to Cho-won as they spend more time together and sees the possibility of accomplishing a 'Sub-3-Hour.'

Jung-wook and Cho-won's mother have a serious dispute over how to train Cho-won. Amid the heated argument, Jung-wook tells Cho-won's mother that she's obsessed, which makes her realize that she's been pushing his son around to make herself feel better about him being autistic. Consequently, she decides not to let him run any more.

CHARACTER & CAST

YOON Cho-won "I will run the marathon of 42.195 kilometers."

He likes chocolate cookies and Chinese noodles, and his favorite animal is zebras. His rather abnormal behavior embarrasses others, let alone gets himself into trouble now and then. One thing he's better at than others is running. When he runs, he becomes the happiest man on earth. However, unable to communicate with others due to his autism, his dream of completing the race below 3 hours seems far-fetched.

CHO Seung-woo

He's been showing his talents in movies and musicals. About the character he plays in < MAÈTATHON >, he says, "It's a character I'd never be able to play again. When I was offered the role, I couldn't say no." He did a beautiful job delivering his character in such a way no other actor could.

Kyung-sook, mother "I wish Cho-won dies a day before me."

She appears to be very rigid in the movie. She lets her son stand in the rain to teach him the word, "Rain," and lures him with a chocolate cookie to climb the mountain. All she cares about is training Cho-won, neglecting her other son and husband who as a result lives separately. On the other hand, she has a doubt that she might be forcing her son to do something that he doesn't like to do.

KIM Mi-sook

Over the years, she's been one of the most loved female actors on TV. In the movie, she looks somewhat different. She's not an intelligent, sophisticated lady any more, but a stern, obsessed mother whose only concern is her autistic son. About the character, she says, "I didn't look at the mirror while making this film. I wanted to make my character look real."

The Director, CHUNG Yoon-chul

The film is like a diary written by a mom raising her son. It's been 20 years, but there seems to be no end to this diary. His body is fully grown up, but his intelligence is only that of a five year old.

Autism makes one unable to express his or her feelings and concerns, which makes it hard for the person to mingle with others. Consequently, parents usually take care of autistic children for the rest of their lives. However, knowing that they can't stay forever with their children, they try to teach their children ways to survive as much as time allows.

As a mother of an autistic child, she wants to find the meaning of life for her son. And what she's chosen is a marathon. She believes her son looks different when he runs. All she hopes is for her son to have willpower and a sense of accomplishment through running. But is it what her son wants as well? Or is she just doing that to make herself feel better?

This movie gives an answer to those questions. Cho-won can't express how he feels, what he thinks of efforts his mother makes. So he takes a different approach; running.

Every mother wants their children to be independent, but that isn't always easy. The mother and son in this movie represent all mothers and sons. It's not just a story of a handicapped son and his mother looking after him, but how far maternal love can go.

PRODUCTION NOTE

<MAÈTATHON> will make your heart race!

To make the film, everybody from the director to extras had to run! For the reality of the film while writing the script, the director joined a marathon club and ran for a year. He also participated in the Chuncheon International Marathon. To capture on camera three marathon events, everybody ran over a hundred kilometers. The director of photography had the hardest time, because he had to run with the camera!

An actual marathon was held for the film!

Since the marathon is the key element in the film, the crew had to find a way to deliver the realistic atmosphere. So they decided to hold an actual marathon event. After 3 months of preparation, the race took place in Incheon with 1,300 participants. The crew got what they wanted, the real atmosphere of a marathon, and the participants enjoyed being in the film.

It's not computer graphics

- 60 thousand people at Chuncheon International Marathon

The ending scene of the film is Cho-won running the Chuncheon marathon. Runners and spectators on the stands weren't computer-generated figures. They were actual people. Thanks to the Chuncheon International Marathon Committee, the crew visited the stadium on the day that it was held and could shoot it successfully with the help of 5 cameras and a helicopter.

Fans volunteered to be extras!

10 eager fans volunteered to be extras throughout the film. The shooting often went on until late at night in early winter, but they didn't complain at all and did their job happily. Now they say they can't wait to see themselves on the big screen.

CHO Seung-woo meets BAE Hyung-jin

At the production briefing, BAE Hyung-jin told CHO Seung-woo who played him, "Seung-woo played Hyung-jin. Seung-woo, you did a good job." For the film, Seung-woo observed Hyun-jin at home, at school, and ran with him, to portray his character as real as possible. Hyung-jin's mother says, "It's kind of odd that Hyung-jin opens his heart to Seung-woo because he usually stays away from strangers."
