PROLOGUE

Nine-year-old troublemaker HanIe

I had the world in my hand.

My brother always smiled at me, no matter how much I bothered him.

My mother always chastised my brother, even when it was my fault.

My father made me laugh everyday with his funny, novel jokes.

After my brother got sick . . .

I lost everything in this world.

My weary brother only frowned when I bothered him.

My mother yelled at me, even when it was my brother's fault.

My father seldomly told a joke at all.

Now, HanIe was the only one who could bring this family bring back to normal.

I had no choice but to try . . .

Give me back my world!

That's what I'll say when my family returns to normal.

Hello/Goodbye, Mother

Hello/Goodbye, Father

And . . .

Little Brother!

SYNOPSIS

My crybaby brother wasn't faking it?

Nine-year-old JANG HanIe is a troublemaker who isn't afraid of anything. His school friends are all his underlings, and even his family members are under his control. He especially considers brother, HanByul, who often complains of being sick, as his greatest target.

My brother says he's sick again today. He had set his alarm clock to wake up in time to go to the tutoring center. While he was asleep, I went and turned off the alarm. As I was making my escape, I got caught red-handed by our mother. There was only one way out.

"He said he was sick . . . so I thought . . ."

I was inching away from her, afraid that she would slap me, when suddenly my brother vomited and fainted. So we all ended up spending the day at the hospital. We didn't even get in much trouble for skipping the tutoring session . . . Our mother and the head doctor were having a serious conversation, but I was just glad that my brother had thrown up at the right time.

"Heh heh. Be honest, brother. You didn't want to go to the tutoring center either, right?"

Troublemaker HanIe . . . But now, I'm not allowed to bother my brother anymore?

They said my brother had a bad tumor in his head, so they had to open his head and cut it out. But I don't understand why they have to shave the outside of his head to cut out a tumor that's inside his head . . . My father, who used to laugh everyday, suddenly got serious and told me that if I bother my brother again, he would give me the beating of my life. But still, I had one more thing to tease my brother about.

"Bald-Headed Brother"

When my brother checked into the hospital, I found myself a new playing ground. I was riding my inline skates and running around everywhere when suddenly someone tackled me. His name was WookIe, the bald-headed farmboy with the weird accent who had the bed next to my brother! His dream is to become a comedian, and the lamebrain guy wants to be called Precious Son, after his favorite comedian. He looks really weird, and the only reason he pretends to be my brother's friend is because they both have shaved heads.

"Hell~ Why's everyone pickin' on me for? You're all dead~"

But that guy's mom and dad always hold on to the dead doctor and cry, and even my brother says I shouldn't pick on him because he's really sick. So I think he really must be in bad shape. I don't know if he'll grow up and become a comedian like Precious Son.

A devil appears at the bald-heads' heaven?!

Mother, father, and brother . . . All they ever talk about is the hospital, my brother's condition, the surgery, and the medicine . . . It's no fun at all. It made me so mad that I ended up giving a friend a bloody nose at school. Then I had another bout with WookIe at the hospital, and I gave him a bloody nose too. After that, I was in the biggest trouble of my life. It was the end. So I had no choice but to run away with WookIe to his country house in the middle of nowhere, even though I hated being with him even more than death itself. Then, for the first time, troublemaker Han Ie simply had a fun time hanging out with farmboy WookIe. We even went looking for "Mister Tarzan," who lived on the mountain behind WookIe's village. He gave some mystic water to WookIe, and it made him suddenly get better . . . All in all, it was a pretty good trip.

Brother! WookIe! It's OK to be bald. It's OK to be a country hick . . . Just don't die!

He was running around the mountains so energetically, so I thought he was getting better. But WookIe got sick again and had to return to the hospital. Now, he just sleeps all the time. The head doctor has a hardened face. He doesn't know when WookIe will open his eyes. My brother too. I thought they had taken out the bad tumor in his head, but maybe they didn't get all of it, because he needed to have another surgery. Now, inside a white room full of strange machine, WookIe and my brother aren't opening their eyes.

WookIe will wake up if I bring his favorite comedian "Precious Son" to visit, right?

Maybe my brother will open his eyes if I bring him the mystic water from the mountain behind WookIe's village?

HanIe used to spend all his time causing trouble. Now, he suddenly gets busy . . .

HanIe's final greeting . . .

Will it be hello, or goodbye?

Little, Brother!

PRODUCTION ISSUE

The true story of a real-life family

This film, Little Brother, is a message that began from one individual's painful experience. In 2002, our scriptwriter KIM EunJung learned of her nephew SulHwe's diagnosis of brain cancer. That is when Little Brother was born. Through the characters HanByul and HanIe, this film brought back to life the physical pain of the older child SulHwe, the emotional pain of the younger child ChangHwe, and the amazing power of youth in overcoming those pains by their own strength. During the filming period, the Hwe brothers visited the filming site and appeared as extras, making the film and their story even deeper in meaning. Little Brother brings the story of SulHwe and Chang Hwe's family to life on the screen in HanByul and HanIe's family, and it gives all of us the chance to experience their story as our own.

Three children and two mothers-Matching the Actors to the Characters

Ji Bin PARK is a prominent child actor who has already been featured in the TV drama Complete Love and the film Family. He has grabbed many people's attention with his acting skill that goes beyond his years. In Little Brother, he portrays his character with experienced sensibility, and he succeeds in his first appearance as the leading role in a motion picture. Moreover, over the many months of auditions, the three child actors-PARK JiBin, SUH DaeHan (Brother) and CHAE WooHyuk (WookIe)-showed their talent and skill by allowing us to share their laughter and tears.

BAE JongOk is a multi-talented actress who has built her acting career in TV, plays, and film. She connects with the viewers' hearts by showing us the portrait of a woman who weeps over the crisis of her child's pain but who also learns the amazing strength of a mother. Finally, through the impressive acting of the popular dramatic actor PARK WonSang, OH JiHae, the comedian JUNG JongChul, and a cameo appearance by AHN SangTae, Little Brother becomes a strong and solid production.

Alternative Investment System-430 Producers

Little Brother's compelling script allowed the implementation of a groundbreaking investment system. Using its prior success in obtaining production funds from individual investors for Family Affair, MK Pictures initiated in November 2004 its "Anonymous Investors Association"-the greatest individual investor fundraising campaign in Korean film history. Within 25 hours, MK Pictures succeeded in raising 195,000,000 won from 430 investors. This success was due to allowing individual investors the opportunity to read the script prior to investing. After the fundraising process was complete, MK Pictures further built investor confidence by sending out progress reports that detailed the production and marketing process to the public. Thus, Little Brother became the Korean film industry's first film to be funded by this new, alternative investing system.

ABOUT THE FILM

The children who turned sorrow into hope

Little Brother is the story of finding hope at the moment of sorrow-something that everyone seeks but has difficulty finding in reality. It is told from the point of view of the young and immature protagonist . . . As the film begins, the viewers enter HanIe's world. It is a world in which his brother pretends to be sick because he doesn't want to go to the tutoring center, the brain tumor and the cancer are distinctly different illnesses, and a real-life Tarzan lives in the woods. In his world, Han Ie finds the hope of being able to protect his brother, and he transfers his earnest young plans into practice. While the adults are trapped and grieving in their painful reality, the children are able to bring forth laughter their own way. They give strength and the gift of hope, which cannot be attained by the adult reality and logic. This film uses the children's point of view to release that hope into images.

Tears and laughter . . . As much as a child

Little Brother naturally evokes tears and laughter at the same time, and in this way, those tears and laughter are truly genuine. Within his family crisis, the nine-year-old protagonist, who is still too young to understand sorrow, learns of tears and teaches of laughter for the first time in his life. Little Brother truthfully tells the story of overcoming a crisis and finding happiness in tears. It shows the laughter that suddenly appears when saddened adults and oblivious children meet. And it shows the emotions that emerge when the adults locked in reality find the children carrying hope. As we grow older, we shed tears with less frequency, quantity, and purity. Little Brother shows us that it is alright to laugh and to cry without holding back, and it provides our hardened hearts the chance to melt and crumble.

Creating a Well-Made Human Drama . . . A Family Film

Little Brother is a film that whole families and people all ages can enjoy. In recent years, the Korean film industry has produced a broad range of different film styles, reflecting the growth in viewer diversity. Only a few years ago, Korean film's style and themes were heavily based on young viewers. But as movie culture became diverse and family-themed films such as Journey Home, Family, and Malaton were produced, these new films containing such universal themes became popular. Little Brother is a new type of film that goes one step beyond the familiar "healing the wounded family" story by showing the story of family, life, and growth through a child's eyes. It also seeks to serve its societal function by addressing the estrangement that child cancer victims suffer, showing concern for leukemia, and reaffirming the importance of children in the family.

CAST & CHARACTERS

Causing trouble, acting bratty, bothering his brother . . .

The nine-year-old immature brother ranks first in all of them!

"My brother is a big sissy idiot!"

JANG HanIe Nine years old

The problem at school is that no one can beat him in causing trouble. He even thinks that his family members are his underlings. Even when his only brother is diagnosed with child cancer, he continues to play pranks on his brother. He even acts out and complains that their mother is only paying attention to his brother. But in order to save his brother and his friend from a serious condition, and to help his mother find laughter again, HanIe will seek the ultimate act of maturity during his nine years of life.

From child star to major motion picture protagonist: PARK JiBin

"In the TV drama Complete Love, he showed a tearful performance that was second only to mother YoungAe (KIM HyeAe), and he grabbed the Best Child Actor Award at the 2003 SBS Actor's Awards." - Cine21

"Complete Love brings the drama's reality to life through the emotional and animated acting of the children." -Herald Economy

"I feel so blessed that everything went smoothly during the past three months of working with these actors. Even the children made it happen without a hitch." -Complete Love writer KIM SooHyun

PARK JiBin's acting talent, along with his adorable face and charm, has earned him considerable attention not only in the present film but also in TV and CF casting. In the popular televised TV drama Complete Love, he portrays the rambunctious son of a terminally-ill mother. And in the film Family, he holds our gaze as the youngest child of a broken family who plays an integral part in helping his father reestablish a relationship with his older sister.

Little Brother is his second film performance and his first protagonist role. In order to become his character HanIe, PARK JiBin diligently practiced dancing, singing, soccer, inline skating, and bicycling, in addition to acting, and he succeeded in completely mastering his character. With the talent and intensity that goes far beyond his ten years, his portrayal of a young brat, with his pure smile and clear tears, naturally reddens our eyelids as we watch over him.

Calming an immature brother, and caring for a sad mother . . .

Even with child cancer, the mature brother has no time for pain.

"I hate it when mother cries. Han Ie, surprise her or something and make her laugh."

JANG HanByul Twelve-years old

HanByul is the adult-like older brother who is unbelievably protective of his only brother HanIe. After being diagnosed with child cancer, he undergoes chemotherapy treatment and numerous surgeries, but HanByul maintains his dignity in front of HanIe and his parents. His condition seems to improve, but after receiving yet another surgery for the malignant brain tumor, HanByul falls into a coma and cannot wake up from that serious condition.

The child actor in the image of an angel: SUH DaeHan

SUH DaeHan is the great hope that was discovered after many months of auditions. He naturally shows us the role of the dignified older brother who walks the boundary line of death and who realizes pain much sooner than many of adults do. He shows us another charm that is altogether different from that of the troublemaker HanIe. Hello/Goodbye, Brother is his debut work. From the innocent expressions of the angelic brother to the pained expressions of a cancer patient who tries to take care of the people around him despite his own suffering, SUH DaeHan gives a completely convincing performance that harkens of boundless possibilities in his future.

"I'm WookIe! Hehehe~ Just call me Precious Son!

WookIe Eight Years Old

WookIe has been a leukemia patient for a long time, but his bright personality brings laughter and happiness to the doctors and nurses, and even to other patients and their families. He is the child cancer ward's most popular star. He wants to overcome his illness soon and to go meet his hero, the comedian Precious Son. He is such a zealous fan that he wants his own nickname to be Precious Son. He becomes close friends with HanIe, who once teased him for being a farmboy, and he gives the gift of adventure on the country field to the city boy troublemaker. But when his condition deteriorates, WookIe falls into a deep coma.

Brimming with humor and talent: CHAE WooHyuk

Cute enough to squeeze and wittier than most, CHAE WooHyuk grabbed the producers' attention from the moment of his audition through his physical humor. When he shaved his head in order to play the role of a leukemia patient, he cried because the image of his bald head looked too strange. But when the filming began he instantly become the character WookIe. His level of concentration made it hard to believe that he was only seven years old. And he showed his high spirits to everyone-often sticking out his tongue at the crew. His natural acting brought his character to life, and as the Young Precious One, he showed us how to hold onto laughter in the midst of a crisis with bravery and humor. He will surely bring another aspect of viewing enjoyment to Little Brother.

Child cancer doctors and nurses directly appear and cheer!

Little Brother's special performers

While casting for the specialty role of head doctor in the child cancer ward, our thoughts turned to the late Dr. LEE Hang, who provided much advice and assistance. As the leading authority in child cancer and brain tumors, he was an important person who worked with the actors. He was absolutely essential in bringing to life one particular scene with real-life child cancer patients. But during the latter half of production, he suffered a sudden accident, and Little Brother became his posthumous work.

Members of Seoul University Medical School's Acting Club were also essential to this project. They wanted to show the hospital's constant struggle against disease, and they stated that they wanted to help a film that would make people think about the meaning of family and happiness through the subject matter of child cancer. These actors made special appearances in the film and became its strong supporters. Their expertise and warm experience supplemented Little Brother with true emotions and details and helped to make the film complete.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Production's Transformation

I first met the brothers HanIe and HanByul through this script. Afterward, in the original work "From Sorrow to Hope," I met the brothers' inspiration, ChangHwe and SulHwe. And finally, I met ChangHwe and SulHwe in real life. Now, I wish to deliver the emotions that I felt while I studied the script, read the original work, and met the Hwe brothers through this film.

As the film's director, I am merely the deliverer of this unstoppable process that began on January 28, 2001 with SulHwe's brain tumor diagnosis. I truly want to deliver this message. The feelings I felt, those emotions . . . That's why this story, this film is my true story. And I dream of the day when this film becomes the true story of all people.

IM TaeHyung

Though Little Brother is director IM TaeHyung's debut film, he has much experience in working on both short and long films in production, filming, and lighting from his college days at Joong Ahng University. In preparing for Little Brother, Director IM met with the film's real-life inspiration, SulHwe and ChangHwe. He also spent three months in a child cancer ward and experienced the lives of the young patients and their families. He became the foundation for creating a real experience in Little Brother, and the dignified real-life child cancer patients, who worried about the families they would leave behind rather than fearing death, became his strong motivation.

Director IM TaeHyung personally directed and advised not only the main child actors but also all the extras. He also displayed his exquisite production ability during the filming process. He created Little Brother as a film with the message of finding hope within sorrow through one family's sudden crisis and their victory through that ordeal. Writer / Author Introduction

Script KIM EunJung

After graduating from Chugae Woman's University with a liberal arts degree, writer KIM EunJung gained various experience in writing novels and broadcast-base scripts. In 1997, she began her film writing career with Connection. Her first project was in the melodrama genre, which was popular in Korean film at the time. It won her the Daejong Film Festival's Best Drama Award, and it gave us our first opportunity to recognize her ability. Afterward, she created a tension-filled composition with shocking twists in the thriller Tell Me Something. She wrote the fresh new story about a love that transcends time and space in October Child. She showed the new generation's new rules of love in Who Are You. And she composed the 24-hour story about a predestined death and battle in Sam. She forged her own world through her work as a script writer with fresh new subjects and diverse styles.

She based Little Brother on the essay "From Sorrow to Hope" that her sister wrote during her oldest son's battle with brain cancer. Using witty dialogue that are specific to children, she succeeds in completing a human drama that tells the hopeless situation of a regular family from the younger brother's point of view-a story that naturally evokes our laughter and tears at the same time.

Original Work "From Sorrow to Hope" KIM HaeJung | (2003: Walk of the Heart)

"I felt it while going back and forth to the hospital's children cancer ward. Hope is instinctual . . . The children feel sorrow and pain, but those things don't lead to hopelessness. I saw those incurable diseases and tumor cells submit a bit more easily in front of those children's instinct and their splendid hope . . ." (excerpt from "From Sorrow to Hope")

"The brain tumor had caused the child to lose sight and control over his body. Still, he told me that he was happy today. Because I saw Hwe's hope!" These are the words that appear on this book's covers. This essay records one mother's thoughts and experiences during her older son's battle with child cancer while living as immigrants in Canada. She had lost hope after seeing her child in such pain. But as she watches over her son, who endures the difficult treatment process because he believes it will make him well, and who gives her encouragement, she learns about the great strength of life. This story about those children who refuse to lose hope and their families leads us to reflect on our own lives and to remember the value of every single day.
