I am 20 years old, I am old enough.

I can handle love!

The heart-fluttering first love,

Innocent Steps

Presented by Show East

Produced by Culture Cap Media

Directed by Park Young-hoon

Starring Moon Geun-young and Park Gun-hyung

Marketing by Film401

Introduction

At first,
I just wanted to learn to dance...
But what he taught me
was the way to love..

Prologue

My name is Jang Chae-ryn, I just arrived from Yunbyun.

(* Yunbyun : the autonomous region of Chosun-Chinese in mainland China)

I pretended to be my sister who had won in the Chosun-Chinese Communalist Dance Contests but was soon found out.

(* Chosun-Chinese : specially indicates 'Korean-Chinese who live in Yunbyun')

But....I am determined to learn to dance.

As I learned one step after another, my toenails would fall off and my legs get swollen.

I don't know if I'm doing any good....

But when I dance with him, my heart stars to flutter.

When starting anew in a place where you don't know a single soul,

Have you ever hoped to encounter a special kind of love?

Isn't he wonderful?

Mista Young-sae used to be a well-renowned dance sports athlete.

He wanted to start over and chose me as his partner.

He thinks that my "Yunbyun style outfit" looks pretty out-of-date.

And it is his specialty to yell at my stick-stiff dance moves.

However, when he uses his big hands to wash by swollen feet, he is so cute.

Right now, he is just the most close person I know in Seoul.

But...I don't think I will ever meet such a great man again.

About the Movie

1. Dance, dance, dance!!! Into the world of Latin dance!!

What does films like <Saturday Night Fever>, <Dirty Dancing>, <Scent of a Woman>, and <Pulp Fiction> have in common?

Aside from the extravagant body moves, uplifting rhythmical music, eye-stopping costumes, and dramatic storylines, the films also offer fantastic sights and excitement. In <Innocent Steps>, the movie tries to express its love story a little deeper with the dance of these films as its motif.

Dance is like another character of the film which demands attention that it is not just another subject matter of the film but the meaning of life.

2. "Little bride" Moon Geun-young becomes a "real woman".

Jang Chae-ryn boldly claims that she will turn twenty in two months.

Pretending to be her sister who is the best sports dance athlete in Yunbyun, Chae-ryn's only experience is dancing in a chorus when she was young.

She gets hurt, trips, and falls everyday and literally bleeds herself to death in learning how to dance.

There she finds a love that is not only sweet but a true love with pain and sadness as well.

Now the little girl turns into a real woman no longer needed to be camouflaged by heavy make-up and high-heeled shoes.

Although Moon Geun-young is yet a young nineteen-year-old girl in <Innocent Steps>, she clearly shows herself becoming a woman in finding herself through her love and her dreams.

3. The best melodramatic film of 2005. An unforgettably special love

<Innocent Steps>, with its unforgettably beautiful lines and heart-touching scenes, delivers a beautiful love story that will long be remembered in people's hearts.

When Young-sae takes Chae-ryn's hand and puts it on his chest and the two recognize their feelings for each other...

When the two reveal their hidden feelings for each other during the interview before false marriage investigators...

When Chae-ryn makes the highly difficult Grand Allegro during the finals...

Moon Geun-young radiates in these great scenes in a refreshing but smooth way. The unique love story of <Innocent Steps> will long be remembered as a beautiful film that softly melts the hearts of the viewers.

4. The innocent and thus courageous Jang Chae-ryn's love story

At first, it was prince Na Young-sae's hand that led the ordinary, non-talented Jang Chae-ryn to the attractive world of dance. Although it was hard, she overcomes all the obstacles before her to realize her dreams. She makes it on her own to become the best dancer. This is how Jang Chae-ryn, the nineteen-year-old Cinderella, runs on her bare feet into the castle rather than waiting for a carriage to be sent by the prince. In <Innocent Steps> Moon Geun-young successfully transforms into a girl who gains both her dream and love through strong determination and effort.

Production Notes

One: On hold for several years. Production begins as Moon Geun-young meets Park Gun-hyung

Through several years in planning, the biggest worry for the production team of <Innocent Steps> was 'what Korean actor can both deliver on dancing and acting?" While having difficulty with the casting, Moon Geun-young read the scenario and boldly stepped forward showing confidence that she must take on the role. Thereafter, Park Gun-hyung, the star of the musical <Saturday Night Fever> decided to join in and it was smooth sailing from there on. The film will be remembered for the special efforts made by the two stars, along with other cast members, who prepared for several months for the dance scenes.

Two: "Little bride" Moon Geun-young reborn as "Yunbyun girl" Jang Chae-ryn

Following the 10 million record-setting <Silmido> and <Taegukgi> in 2004, the film that melted away the frozen box-offices throughout Korea was no other than the cute teenage bride, Moon Geun-young in <My Little Bride>.

Now, she returns as the dancing Yunbyun girl, Jang Chae-ryn.

Moon Geun-young showed high devotion to <Innocent Steps> right off the bat as she started learning the Yunbyun dialect from a Chosun-Chinese teacher as soon as she had been cast. However, Moon Geun-young felt something was missing and eventually set out to Yunbyun directly herself. She took her experiences there to make suggestions to the director about Jang Chae-ryn's character background and portrayed her in a more detailed realistic manner in the film. Also, she studied Chinese for three months for her Chinese speaking lines and showed special fondness toward her movie character.

Dancing is the key! Moon Geun-young becomes a sports dance athlete!!

From the moment she was cast in August, she started her dance training for 10 hours everyday. She studied through the Rhumba, Cha Cha, Jive, Samba, etc. With her new found skills, the dance director even suggested that she enter an amateur sports dance contest. Six months later, the "little" Moon Geun-young had matured into "Jang Chae-ryn, the Yunbyun girl".

Not only dancing but Moon Geun-young sings a love song

In the movie, <My Little Bride>, Moon Geun-young sings the song, "I don't know what love is yet' with her trademark cuteness, and greatly added to the film's success. In <Innocent Steps> she sings "Ye lai xiang" by Teresa Teng, a Chinese song, and sings of love. With her matured and exotic loveliness glowing in her voice, she adds another dimension of delight to the film.

Three: 0.2 million US$ invested for 2 days of filming.

Full out sports dance contest filmed for the first time

The best scene that <Innocent Steps> proudly puts forth is the sports dance national competitions scene. For this scene, they first set up stairs and built in a dance floor at the Little Angels concert hall. To create this grand, spectacular scene, they brought in real sports dance athletes along with 300 other extras. The three cameras set to film at the same time not only captured the fabulous dance moves but the delicate emotions of Chae-ryn who made it to the stage for her love and her dream. In particular, Moon Geun-young's matured and lavish dance moves, resulting from her hardcore training for six months, will long be remembered as one of the best dancing scenes.

Marketing Notes

One! Capturing reality into film

-the first to go abroad for just poster shots!

Jang Chae-ryn's (Moon Geun-young) Yunbyun life is not included in <Innocent Steps> but is an important origin to the story. The production wanted the teaser posters to give off a sense of prologue to the story. To add reality, the crew set out for shoots in China. Goo Bon-chang, the leading photographer in Korea, set out with them to carefully capture Moon as a girl from Yunbyun. This all resulted in the birth of two very prominent posters.

Tip: Finding a place suited to be the birth place of Jang Chae-ryn was no easy task. Coordinators on location where given a few images and materials and set out on a search for two weeks throughout China including Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. At the end of their search, they discovered Zhouzhuang, an area near Suzhou on the Yangtze River plain. Zhouzhuang is a beautiful scenic area which draws in an average of 200,000 visitors per day.

Two! Not for sale: Moon Geun-young calendar, preliminary press kit, on hot demand!

After producing the two teaser posters, it was unanimous that the rest of the beautiful shots were too good to be kept in storage. The production decided to make a preliminary press kit using these photographs. The press kit was set to come out in January so it was decided to be made in the form of table-top calendars for the New Year.

Normally, around 500 to 600 press kits are printed per movie but with high demand, 1500 ended up going to the press. Even this phenomenal number could not meet the demands and were in dire shortage. Countless calls from Moon Geun-young fans and other people in the film business ordering the calendars only made her popularity all the more real.

Three! Interests from the Press zoom in on <Innocent Steps>

-Nearly 200 reporters swarm on public location shoot!

Everyone knew that Moon Geun-young will be dancing in <Innocent Steps>. However, no one had ever before seen her dance! It was the long anticipated public preview of her dancing!

An unprecedented 200 reporters came to the public location shot. Endless calls flooded Einsworld (the filming location) and the official homepage server even went down. This also showed how <Innocent Steps> was a highly anticipated film.

Four! Trying a new technique, the teaser preview

Produced in separation from the movie, the teaser preview for <Innocent Steps> was produced using the latest in technology, the motion control camera (MCC). Several different images of Moon Geun-young can be seen together on one screen at the same time. Director Yong Yi of <Spring Bears Love> who directed the preview says, "I wanted to show Chae-ryn maturing through the pains of love and heartache into a woman, like the caterpillar before it turns into a beautiful butterfly.

Five! <Innocent Steps> first revealed like a novel through the Internet

On the homepage for <Innocent Steps>, a story divided into 6 chapters were shown. Starting on April 1st, two stories per week were disclosed over three weeks span. Also, if one downloaded the active-desktop on the site, even if you didn't log on to the site, you would get cute photo updates of Moon Geun-young automatically popping up from the toolbar.

Dance with Me?

Her Theme...Bright, rhythmical Cha Cha!

The joy that comes from overcoming fear...The Cha Cha is the first dance that Chae-ryn completely masters. With the slow tempo of Rhumba mixed with the untamed rhythm of the Mambo, this is the Cha Cha. Picking out the best parts out of the two dances, the Cha Cha is smoothly danced to a clear and rhythmical music at a normal tempo that makes the viewer shake his shoulders to the beat. Chae-ryn's bright character, like the Cha Cha brings smiles to the faces of those who lost joy and laughter in life.

The bright and rhythmical Cha Cha is the dance most suited for Chae-ryn who smiles radiantly and triumphs over anything that comes her way.

His Theme...Hiding his love deep within, the intense Samba!

Young-sae is weak at expressing his feelings. He shows his hot, intense feelings through the Samba instead. The Samba originated from the natives of Brazil but came to be the dance of love enjoyed by many people over the years. It is slower in tempo and not very lively but in its slow rhythm, Samba is the dance that puts forth great intensity of emotions. The dance resembles Young-sae's strong inner feelings as he is unable to express his love for Chae-ryn but is forced to just watch and cheer her on within. The Samba seems to be a sad dance but is like Young-sae's heart that is hiding his love deep within him.

Their Theme...The dance of love, the Rhumba!

Although Chae-ryn and Young-sae do not express their feelings, as the two spend more time with each other and dance together, their feelings grow deeper.

Their love seems to radiate at the summit as they dance the romantic Rhumba. The Rhumba is the dance that calls on love.

It is the slowest Latin dance which demands the most flexibility in the moves. The smooth and voluptuous Rhumba involves more touching between the partners. Young-sae and Chae-ryn's love starts to grow deeper in their love for each other through their practices on this dance. The Rhumba helps them realize their feelings for each other that they weren't really aware of.

Tip: What is sports dancing?

It is social dancing with an added element of sports. Sports dancing is also known as competitive dancing. The dances are divided into competitive or exhibition sections and is different from normal social dancing and demands hard training and endurance.

Sports dance is basically a love story-telling between a couple (man and woman) through music.

The way that the love is expressed differentiates the type of dance.

This expression of love can be divided in two broad categories; Modern and Latin dances. The Modern dance competitions consist of the Waltz, Tango, Fox Trot, Vienna Waltz, and express passionate love. The Latin dance events are the Samba, Rhumba, Cha Cha, Paso Doble, Jive, and put forth voluptuous and revealing love.

Synopsis

The inside of a ferry traveling from Yanji, China to Incheon in Korea, Chae-ryn's fluttering emotions slowly turn into fear. She puts on make-up and gets dressed up like an adult but something is not quite right. When the boat stops, Chae-ryn must become her older sister who had won the <Chosun State Dance Contest> consecutively. Young-sae was once acclaimed as the greatest dancer. Getting a new partner has a special meaning for Young-sae. It means having hope after two years of giving up and making up his mind to forget Seh-young. Maybe he could make a comeback with his new partner at the Championships scheduled to be held in three months! When it is discovered that Chae-ryn has come in place of her sister and Sang-doo, an acquaintance of Young-sae who had spent all his money bringing Chae-ryn in from China, sells her to a bar. Chae-ryn keeps her faith when she is told that she will be taught how to dance and that she will receive 2 million won. She vows to survive her ordeal, remembering the warmth of the few days that she spent with Young-sae and the beautiful dress and the shoes that she saw in the dance studio. NA Young-sae

Young-sae was once regarded as the greatest dancer. Having lost his partner as well as his desire to dance, Young-sae laughs at himself and accepts what may very well be his last opportunity by pairing up with the champion of the <Chosun State Dance Contest> and the hope of making a comeback at the Championships to be held three months from now.

However, what Young-sae comes face to face with is an immature and annoying 19-year-old girl who knows nothing, but as they dance together feelings that he had long ago forgotten come alive again.

PARK Gun-hyung An established star in musicals sets to conquer the silver screen!

PARK Gun-hyung was cast in the leading role for <Go Go Beach> which featured all the hottest performers in Korea and drew serious attention to himself. He also played the leading role in <Saturday Night Fever>, which was sold out time and time again. The 183 centimeter tall PARK Gun-hyung is a well-prepared actor who has worked out systematically and whose slightly cynical expression has become his most attractive aspect. His self-restrained acting and his wide vocal range, accurate vocalization, and expressive dancing all worked together to earn him the title role in <Innocent Steps>.

Director

A love so beautiful gives forth a scent that can be felt even in passing...

Director Park Young-hoon

Director Park Young-hoon who held the megaphone for <Innocent Steps> majored in film arts at Dong-guk University. He gained field experience as assistant director to director Park Chul-soo in <301, 302>. Furthermore, he played supporting roles for movies like <Sorum> and <Ghost Mamma> and diligently studied acting as well.

<Innocent Steps> is director Park Young-hoon's second film.

His first film, <Addicted> portrays a deadly and vicious kind of love through the idea of being "possessed" alongside beautiful imagery. The movie became a hot issue with his top star studded cast of Lee Byung-hyun and Lee Mi-yeon along with the peculiar subject matter of being "possessed". Now with his second film, he claims to tell a love story that is calm and still like the quiet scent that diffuses. Entirely different in matter and structure from his first film, <Innocent Steps> is about a man and a woman learning to love each other through dancing. With the elaborate images and a heart-warming love story, the film will be perfect to watch on a spring flowery day with the one you love.

Filmography : <Addicted>, <Innocent Steps>

Director's note

Different from other dance movies, I wanted to show a love story that results from love and dance harmonized into one.

At first, I wanted to give the idea that a mature adult man, Young-sae and a young teenager, Chae-ryn cannot possibly suit each other in love. Rather than falling for a beautiful woman but a boorish girl from Yunbyun, I wanted to show a man slowly finding love after having taught her everything that is within him. I wanted to take the most unsuitable partners and show their most beautiful love story to the world.

In the film, I wanted to show not just your average dancing but traditional Latin dances mixed in with ballet moves. In the western world, dance is an important part of social culture but in our country it is not well thought of, having started in shady places. Thus, I wanted to show that sports dancing is not a lowly, vulgar type of dance but something that can be met by the general public. I hope to change the false opinions about dancing that is currently instilled upon Korean society. National security, dispatching troops to Iraq, national interests, political disputes, etc. These are some of the hot issues that decorated the press throughout the entire year of 2004. Everyone complains about how difficult it is to live. I hope to show a heart-warming and touching film that brings comfort to people in a hard period in time. I want to offer a film that was fun to make for the production team and fun to watch for the viewers. When viewers come out of the theaters after seeing the film, I would hope that each person would walk away with a sense of joy, comfort, and satisfaction.

The best scenes, best lines, and best acting that can only be seen in <Innocent Steps>!

The best scene picked by the leading actress Moon Geun-young,

-the National Dance Competition scene

As the climax to <Innocent Steps>, this scene is not only chosen by Moon but all staff members as the best scene, hands down. When Jang Chae-ryn (Moon Geun-young) shows off her best dance moves at the National Sports Dance Competitions, Moon shows her full-out dancing skills acquired over eight months of hard training. In particular, 0.2million US$ was put into making the competitions hall look real. They brought in professional dance sports athletes as extras and carefully hand-made every costume worn for that scene. There is a lot more to see alongside Moon Geun-young's spectacular dance moves.

The best scene chosen by the leading actor Park Gun-hyung,

-Chae-ryn's first dance practicing scene

When Jang Chae-ryn learns to dance for the first time, Moon Geun-young had already practiced 10 hours a day for four months. However, Moon insidiously acted like she was learning for the first time, taking false steps with stiff body and all. Chae-ryn pouts her lips as she is unable to control her body into following the dance moves. This is a scene that teems with Moon Geun-young's cuteness. Anyone watching will be mesmerized by her and will never grow tired of watching the scene over and again.
