April Snow
About the Movie
An Affair and Love; there is no answer.
<April Snow> is a story about a man and a woman who face their spouses' accident and betrayal together and lose the balance on their lives. The man and the woman meet for the first time in an empty hallway in front of an operating room. As the two rush in upon hearing of their spouse's accident, they realize that the man's wife and the woman's husband had an affair together. They also realize that they share the same sadness. The two get lost in despair of confusion and anger but they unexpectedly fall in love and jump into the same "affair" as their spouse's did. They hesitate at this new love and feel more heartache and pain.
As such, <April Snow> shows the ironic side to love through a circumstance that can happen to anyone and another affair arising within the situation. Though they resented and were furious at their spouses, it is after they have fallen into the exact same situation that they realize how hard it must have been for them and forgive them. Then, they stride toward yet another ending. <April Snow> shows a different side to the subject of extramarital affairs from other films with a more matured love story.
In <Christmas in August> director Hur Jin-ho presented the nervous excitement that comes from love. In <One Fine Spring Day> he delicately showed the process of a love that seemed eternal gradually changing. This time, he captures the lyricism of affairs. In his former films, he told the story through those who tried to capture the moments of the past through "photographs" and "sounds". In <April Snow>, director Hur tells the love story through two people in a "special situation" of their spouse's accidents and affair. Here, love is something that starts in a time of despair when it seems utterly inconceivable. Thus, <April Snow> is Hur's third love story and also a different kind of love story. It is a story about married people in a complex situation with various emotions of betrayal, anger, fury, longing, jealousy, desire, etc. hidden in. The way the characters must be seen is different. Thus the camera goes in closer at the characters to catch their outbursts of emotions and move along with them. The explosion of emotions, without losing the unique lyricism to the film, will surely bring about unfamiliar and new excitements. The common subject of "affairs" and "love" will go through the special filter of "the Hur Jin-ho style melodrama" and be reborn anew.
Bae Yong-joon and Son Ye-jin; their special meeting.
Bae Yong-joon plays the role of In-su, a man who suffers from the pain of betrayal with the happiness of love at the same time. Director Hur claims that "Bae is sometimes strong and sometimes soft.
Sometimes he is both strong and soft. And sometimes the two sides of him clash but the energy thatcomes out from that is exciting. With the appeal of having both images existing together, he is the perfect match to play In-su, a man who finds a new love in the midst of all the anger and confusion."
Son Ye-jin plays Seo-young, a woman who bravely faces a new love in the midst of deep despair. Director Hur claims that Son not only has rich sensitivity but also has the eye to see the film more broadly. She is interested in expressing love in its various rays of color. Through <April Snow> Son will show herself as a more matured woman and an actress who does not fall short of the title, "the queen of melodramas".
The two actors both showed various sides of love through TV and on the big screen. Now they attempt to show "a living love" in <April Snow>. Hur took the rough sketched characters, clothed them with the originality and unique sides of Bae Yong-joon and Son Ye-jin, and perfected them into three-dimensional beings. Hur's way of continuously talking about and shaping the characters together had inspired the two actors. They projected themselves to the main characters and their painful love story. Consequently their acting and their inner characters deepened. As the melodramatic couple rich in sensitivity meet and put forth a great synergy, their inner souls acting out will undoubtedly shine on the big screen. Director Hur claims, "It will not be just acting on the outside but one that is filled with the inner soul crying, laughing, and struggling through the pain."
Character & Cast
"If we met a long time ago or much later, what would we be?"
In-su, a man suffering from pain and happiness together
In-su is a 31 year old concert lighting director. While living a happily married life, he finds out through his wife's car accident that she had been having an affair and loses balance on his life. Although he may look strong, he suffers from his wife's betrayal, gets drunk and sheds tears to show his softer, sensitive side. In-su meets Seo-young the wife of Kyung-ho (the man whom his wife was having an affair with) for the first time in the hospital. He approaches her first as he sees her suffering from the same pain and sadness. As they spend more time together, he falls in love with her. He then carefully caresses the new love that comes upon him.
Bae Yong-joon
"Rather than preparing for the story before filming began as I did in my previous works, in <April Snow> I tried to feel everything in the scene even to the flow of air."
After becoming the top star in Asia with <Winter Sonata>, Bae Yong-joon succeeded in the difficult transition on to the big screen with <Untold Scandal>, 10 years after his first debut. He is a diligent actor who takes on his every challenge with a fresh heart and mind. He further transformed and offered new images of himself in his photo collection book, <The Image Vol. 1>. Always emptying himself to new challenges and to greater heights, he prepares yet for another change. His soft smile that melted the hearts of countless fans transforms here to play the role of a lonely man who suffers from his wife's betrayal.

Son Ye-jin
"I find it appealing to express all the different sides of love. In <April Snow> there is a living love that is different from the sides of love that I had expressed before."
Through her works on the silver screen since her debut, Son Ye-jin immediately became an actress highly recognized for her performance and marketability. In just a short while, she fast became one of the top jewels of Chungmooro (Hollywood, Korea). Production Notes
Showing passion for acting with his whole body and soul, Bae Yong-joon
Bae Yong-joon portrays In-su, a man who finds a new love after experiencing love's betrayal and pains. Through <April Snow> he shows a greater variety in the spectrum of acting. He delicately expresses the tormented inner struggles of a distressed In-su. His most memorable scene is when In-su is drunk and crying after finding out about his wife cheating on him. The scene where it most clearly shows In-su's pain and confusion, Bae almost explodes and spews out his emotions as he concentrates on his acting. Bae was worried to act out this particular scene that called for expressing a great despair beyond imagination. Knowing that the most important thing in acting is to bring out the best emotions in the scene, Bae drank real alcohol as he did the scene. As soon as the camera turned on, Bae showed In-su's feelings remarkably naturally.
Completely draining out the pain and distress, even after the director gave him the "Okay" Bae could not snap out of In-su's emotions and sat crying and wiping off the tears for a while. Normally, Hur tries to bring out several emotions from an actor to a scene but he claims that he could not think of anything else but what Bae showed in this scene. Acting with his heart rather than his head Bae shows a great passion and power as a great actor.
Son Ye-jin breathes in life with her shinning quick wit
Having already spread her acting wings through several works, Son Ye-jin reveals the colors most like her true self in <April Snow>. This is due to director Hur's ability to make wide boundaries and allow the actors to act as their emotions lead them. In the film where one has to extemporize on the emotions in a situation drawn out by the director, Son puts herself completely into Seo-young and breathes in new spirit to the film.
"Wanna have an affair with me? That'll make them flip..."
Seo-young boldly and sincerely throws in a joke mixed in with self-scorn to In-su who is in the same situation as her. To capture the anger and sadness from the spouse's betrayal, this line was made on the spot as Ye-jin became Seo-young and expressed her inner emotions. Seo-young appears fragile but Son wanted to show the young woman's boldness. Seo-young's character teems with life through this line.
"I'm still pretty aren't I? Though I'm just a housewife...."
Son claimed that she felt sad as if she had really lost the man she loved to someone else. She says that she spontaneously made up this line to show her jealousy toward Su-jin, the career woman and also to feel like she was also being loved. Throwing this line at In-su with a sad smile clearly captures Seo-young's pain and sadness.
A Meeting of Real Performance and Film
As In-su's job is a lighting director, there are many concert scenes in <April Snow>. The film's climax is decorated with a concert scene where a real concert meets film. The sheer size of the concert scene was a hot subject. It is not only the first in Korean films to do so but brought meaning to both the concert and the movie. The scene seemed more real and natural with the audience's voluntary participation. Also powerful performances by Cho Sung-mo, Lee Min-woo, Jewelry, Loveholic, Clazziquai, and others helped excite the audience and brought more reality to the movie. Furthermore, the hip hop duo Lee Ssang made their debut through <April Snow> and put on a powerful and charismatic live performance that brought the staff to their feet. The staff had a good time watching the concert and filming the scene, a nice relaxing break from all the hard work. The great efforts from the director, the staff, the cheering audience, and the passionate performances of Korean singers who all cooperated in creating the perfect concert scene will long be noted as one of the best.
The place prepared for <April Snow>, Samcheok
With no exception to his unique style of taking the artificial sense completely out of his films, he incorporates an actual place and depicts the characters well suited there. <April Snow>'s production team set out on a search for the perfect "unfamiliar yet real city" where the two main characters will meet and cross paths. They searched through every corner of the country to find the perfect town and hospital. Ultimately, they came across Samcheok, which seemed to be built as a grand scale production set waiting for <April Snow>. There, they found the old, complex structured hospital with its perfectly strange surrealistic atmosphere, despite being the most real space where the characters encounter their despairing truths in the film. Coming right off the pages of the script, a small motel also stood near the hospital. Furthermore, just past the motel were also the Jook-suh-roo, one of the 8 great Eastern sceneries, and an old cafeteria built without columns. Everything director HUR Jin-ho had ever wanted in <April Snow>, including the sense of loneliness radiating from the quiet still streets, was already prepared waiting in Samcheok.
As filming began, Samcheok changed into a space that seems necessary for the movie rather than a mere background. Director Hur, who wanted to melt the characters into the setting, added newness to the scenes in Samcheok's natural setting. In particular, the greatest snowfall of the century in March was the biggest present Samcheok had prepared for <April Snow>. Thanks to the snow, scenes that could not be done with artificial snow were able to be captured and added more reality and natural likeness to borne the beautiful scenes.
Interview with Director Hur Jin-ho
1. What kind of movie is <April Snow>?It is a movie about two people betrayed by their spouses. At first they are furious but ironically they meet, fall in love, and ultimately come to understand their spouses who cheated on them.
2. What is the meaning behind the Korean title for <April Snow>?The Korean title means "outing". This film reveals more emotions and is different from my previous films, I wanted to show the clashing of emotions a lot stronger. It could be an "outing" from my usual films, or it could be an "outing" from the everyday common stories as found in my former works. The story and the emotion expression methods here are different from my past works. Thus, rather than being a continuation from my former films, I wanted this film to be seen totally different. That's why I went with "outing" for the title.
3. You spent almost five months with the actors. How was working with Bae Yong-joon and Son Ye-jin?Bae Yong-joon had a difficult time at first because his acting style and what I wanted out of him were different. At one point, we did over 60 takes on one scene. But to my surprise, he never once slowed down or gave up and put in 100% until the very end. From the middle on, we work perfectly well with each other. To express In-su's emotions, the role called for subtle and intrinsic sides and was probably very difficult to act but Bae handled it well brilliantly. The movie surely has moments when his inner-portrayals really shine. Son Ye-jin is an actress who is really good at expressing the emotions. When the scene calls for tears, she has the ability to immediately react to and act out the scene perfectly. Also, Seo-young's character was supposed to be an incredibly passive and quiet house-wife but Son brought her bright, energetic self into the role and created a deeper, well-shaped character. Showing aspects like these were a delight to capture through the film and through the working process.
4. Bae Yong-joon and Son Ye-jin's crying scenes are impressive. In-su and Seo-young's expressions of emotions seem different from those of your former films. How did the expression of emotions change from your previous works? One may be tired of seeing the crying scenes in this film but the expression of emotions here is clearly different from the norm. Anyone who has ever cried before will know what I mean. Although they were just tears coming off the scripts, I wanted them to have more sincerity and stressed that upon the actors. When In-su cries in the movie, In-su and Bae Yong-joon become one and you can sense that he is really crying and there is truth behind it. Even I got sad watching him. That's what's different.
5. Was there anything in particular that you demanded from the actors for the emotional scenes?Making the character first and going ahead with it is no fun. It may be one method but I tried to capture how a character had lived up to the current story and the actor's innate traits and take what comes naturally from the situation. It was definitely not an easy task.
6. What did you focus on the most in directing this film?In-su and Seo-young meet from their spouses having an affair and being in a car accident together. As their spouses are lying unconscious, I didn't want to show In-su and Seo-young's love in sad, dark way. That wouldn't have been interesting. Also, showing it too brightly and warmly would seem naive. Finding the balance to that was the hardest thing to do.
7. What changes in style can be found in this film as opposed to your former works? There is no huge change in style from my former films. However, there are a few changes to the way some things were expressed. I tried to get a little closer to the characters and moved more uninhibitedly.
8. Is there a reason for moving the characters into an unfamiliar place (Samcheok) away from their usual, everyday place of living? The Korean title "outing" gives the same sort of feeling. I thought it would be interesting to have them away from routine life and end up in a place where they don't know anyone but the unconscious spouse. The psychological and emotional ups and downs the characters feel in this context are worth a look. I thought that this would be a good place where two people meet and carry out a story.
9. As it is in your previous films, an artificially made set can barely be found. Is there a reason for not including sets?I like the feeling of shooting in a real place rather than an artificially made setting. Sure, it is easier and more comfortable in a set when planning ahead for the camera movements and the wires. However, when an actor acts in a real place, he appears more natural than on a set and I think the unexpected and the necessary details also come forth from there.
10. <Christmas in August> shows the excitement of love beginning. <One Fine Spring Day> shows a love that seemed eternal dying out. What is the side of love that you want to show through the dramatic situation in <April Snow>?When a person loves, he will feel a number of different things. Although two people trust each other sometimes there is a betrayal. How can we understand the anger that arises? Should it be understood? Should they remain furious and end everything? These are the questions I wanted to explore. This movie is about men and women who are married with the common the subject of affairs added in. Some say that when others do it, it's an affair but when they do it's a romance. If so, what is the difference between the two? This is the kind of question I wanted to ask. These questions were always on my mind throughout the entire process of making this film.
Interviews with the Actor/Actress
Bae Yong-Joon
1. Why did you choose to star in <April Snow>?
I always read over the entire script before deciding on a film. However, this time, I decided to be a part of it even before the script came out. It was because of my expectation and faith in director Hur Jin-ho. Different from my usual style of analyzing the character and preparing for the role before the production begins, director Hur sets out to discover things on the filming floor and produce spectacular works. I had high anticipations on that. Thus, rather than preparing ahead I tried to focus more on feeling everything in the scene even to the flow of air. I think my expectations and anticipations were pretty much fulfilled.
2. What is <April Snow> in your opinion?
<April Snow> is about two people trapped in a desperate situation and their love story. In-su suffers the heartache from his wife's betrayal but falls in the same kind of love. The thought of an affair never crossed his mind but he ends up in the same ironic situation and comes to understand his wife. I think it's a movie about thinking over on one's life and love.
3. Can you explain more about the role of In-su that you played?
In-su is a lighting director. He has confidence in his work and is a bold man who lives diligently. However, he is also a sensitive man who cries in torment at his wife's sudden accident and truth to her affair. Also, In-su is a character mixed in with a side of me and a side of director Hur. Before, I would normally build on the character through imagining his habits, his favorite colors, family background, educational level, etc. But with In-su, he is a character that I shaped and formed by moment to moment. Sometimes In-su seems like this one type of person and at others he seems to be totally different.
4. What did you focus on the most while acting?
In-su struggles from his wife's extramarital affair but he eventually falls in the same situation. I think I needed to focus most on how to come about in that situation. I also think that the gist of our movie might lies there.
5. What do you remember the most from the production?
I never once drank while shooting a scene because I thought I would lose my focus if I did. However, I drank real alcohol while acting in this movie. I thought the scene where In-su is utterly distressed from his wife's affair and betrayal could not be expressed without drinking. I also felt uninhibited to drink during the scenes in this movie. So, I drank but wondered if I could successfully portray the pain and despair. However, the emotions came about easier than I thought. It may be the easiest scene I did during our movie. Up until then, when I had to cry for a scene, I concentrated on a time when I was sad or hurt rather than the situation of the scene. However, this scene itself was sad enough. I wanted to lie down on the floor and cry my heart out. I guess this could be a change in my acting. Being able to really feel the situation...I can never forget that.
6. When the making special aired during the concert scenes, your fans watched you cry and cried along. How did you feel then?
I also felt like crying because I could feel all the emotions in that scene....But I could not cry. Wouldn't it be funny for an actor to watch himself acting and cry? But the pain of the scene flooded in exactly and I could recall the heartache I felt as In-su.
7. The story is about married people and extramarital affairs. If you were in the same situation, what would you do?
I know that it can happen to anybody but wish that it would never happen to me. If the situation should come upon me, I think I will struggle with it a lot more than In-su. Perhaps I'd die from all the heartache and pain. Maybe I'll struggle with it a lot then try to find a new hope in life again. Then maybe I'll try to find love again.
8. How was working with director Hur?
To be honest, it was really hard. I thought things like "what should I do for a living from now on? Am I really an actor? What is an actor?" I always thought that there were answers for the most part in life. But when I met director Hur I felt that we had nothing in common, nothing I can sketch out or put into frame. I'm still lost in this confusion but I think it has been an extremely great opportunity for me. I think he provided a way for me to mature as a person and grow as an actor.
9. How was working with Son Ye-jin?
I think it's almost like it is in the movie. The director told us "never to get close with each other" at first. So, I purposely didn't strike conversations or talk about anything personal with her. I think the uneasiness between the two of us is captured exactly as is at the beginning of the film. As we spent more time together, like in the movie, we started chatting socially, talked about more personal things, and got close as it is in the flow of the film. Son Ye-jin is phenomenal in her ability to concentrate in on her character and express the emotions naturally. She is an actress who teems with talent and passion for acting. I learned and gained a lot from working with her.
10. What would you say that changed you the most after filming <April Snow>?
I don't think I ever really enjoyed the situation while I acted before. I think I just wanted to show what I prepared and carefully planned out. I never really tried to enjoy the situation and make something out of it. But now I gained the courage and heart to go about my acting that way.
Son Ye-jin
1. Why did you choose to star in <April Snow>?
I think the sense of love in the genre of melodrama is different every time. Through each film I did, I thought a lot about love and wanted to perfect portraying it as an actress. I wanted the chance to work with director Hur because out of all the melodramas, his movies have left a big impression on me. Then I came across <April Snow> and thought that it would be a great film and decided to join in.
2. What kind of movie is <April Snow>?
<April Snow> is a movie about finding love in utter despair. Two people find out through each other's spouse being in a car accident that they were cheated on. Through that difficult time, they too start having an extramarital affair. It's a film that captures the complex and unexplainable emotions and makes one re-think on love.
3. Explain about your character Seo-young.
27 year old Han Seo-young is a woman who married young. She looks quiet and weak from the outside but knows how to handle herself well in a desperate situation. In her greatest hour of despair she meets In-su and falls in love. Rather than trying to negate it or deny it, she shows boldness in welcoming a new love. She is very honest with her feelings.
4. The character here seems a lot more mature from your past roles. What was the most difficult thing about acting in this role?
I thought it was most difficult to portray being an ordinary housewife in the most natural way. I worried if that character can be seen as a part of me. However as filming went on, I felt I could mold myself better in the character. The director even commented that I look like a newlywed wife once. I think I matured through each year since my early debut in the same way that Seo-young matured from getting married young. Time wise, I think we are a good match.
5. What is your most memorable scene?
Since the entire movie is based on a painful situation, it was very difficult to shoot each scene and all are meaningful to me. For me, I think the funeral scene in Haenam is the most memorable as the most difficult scene. It's the scene where In-su and Seo-young go to pay respects to the family of the victim from the car accident. I think for Seo-young, this scene must have been the most difficult and heart-wrenching. I actually felt like Seo-young in that scene. It was incredibly heart piercing painful to act it and to feel the great sadness that I would never want it again to experience in life.
6. The story is about married people and affairs. If you were in the same situation, what would you do?
I can understand In-su and Seo-young but I don't ever want to experience the pain that they did in real life. It hurt so much to love In-su that's why I never want to love like that. To be honest, before we started filming, I'd say I understood their special situation about 70%. But now that I'm done filming, I think I completely understand them. During the filming, I realized that In-su and Seo-young are just like ordinary people, not much different from the rest of us.
7. It must have been hard with all the many scenes that called for crying. Was there anything in particular you prepared for the crying scenes?
First, I tried to submerge myself right into the situation. The entire story of the film is heart-piercing and painfully sad. At times, I felt tears swelling up in scenes where crying wasn't necessary. The director would even comment that no crying was necessary for this scene and that. The thing I worry the most when it comes to crying is not knowing if I'm completely in the situation and crying real heart-felt tears or just tears that come from routine acting. I don't know if I'll ever be able to answer that. It's still an inner struggle for me and I think it will continue to be so.
8. How was working with director Hur Jin-ho?
Director Hur always says that there is not one answer to any given situation. He would direct the actors to make things happen with the situation and that was a little hard for me at first. I didn't know what to do and often wondered if I was doing things right. However, the actors and the director worked together in creating animated, breathing characters and made them seem more real. It was a new experience in which I gained a lot from. I would love to work with him again on another great film.
9. What kind of actor is Bae Yong-joon?
He is completely honest. When the director asks for something that he thinks differently on, he would clearly say "I don't think that's right" and discuss things out to perfect his acting. I got the impression that he is an incredibly passionate actor. He would do several takes over and over until he felt that he put forth the emotions that he thought was right for the scene. I was really impressed with him.
10. What would you say that changed you the most after filming <April Snow>?
I don't know if there is one specific thing that changed me but I think I matured up another step as an actress through <April Snow>. Throughout the production, I had the chance to think about my tolerance, my ability to take things step by step, and working well with others. It's not about working with just the actors but with the entire staff to make one movie. I learned how to look broader, at the big picture. I think what I've gained through this movie will help me in other films. I matured a lot as an actress and as a person and affected me a lot.
