The Unborn

Beneath the quiet surface of this world, there lies a horror born of grief and disappointment. A woman dead before her time and a child murdered before birth cry out for vengeance, and unleashes a supernatural force of unimaginable power¡K

Por (INTHIRA CHAROENPURA) works in a bar, and sells drugs for the thuggish gangster Aod (WANNAKIT SIRIPUT). When Aod gives Por a savage beating, she experiences a bizarre moment of realization. Somewhere in her mind, a gateway opens, one that leads her past lives. Near death, she is saved by the supernatural power of Mai (PRANGTHONG CHANGTHONG). Por wakes up in a hospital under the gentle care of Doctor Rudy (ARANYA NAMWONG). She finds that the continuous messages from Mai keep haunting her.

Doctor Rudy congratulates Por on the fact that she is ten weeks pregnant. He persuades the impoverished teenage girl to keep the baby. Doctor Rudy herself has a highly-educated son, and has also given birth to a daughter who died young. The doctor begins to treat Por as a replacement for the child she has lost, and encourages her to change her lifestyle.

Por experiences various strange phenomena. She hears the sound of a baby crying, and a doll lying on the bed of a recently deceased girl moves by itself. There are strange shadows moving in the hospital ward and bizarre reflections in the mirror. Realising that Mai is responsible for all of this, she finally challenges the spirit to communicate with her face to face. In a meeting between the worlds, Por meets Mai, who is her self from a past life! Mai is The Unborn, the vengeful spirit of baby killed in a voodoo ritual held after her mother's murder.

Por decides to investigate Mai's case, and starts investigating with the help of Pat

(KARUNPON THIEANSUWAN), a handsome young volunteer from the rehab centre. Their investigation reveals one strange clue after another, and finally reveals the satanic scheme that not only ended Mai's life, but also threatens her own. Por realizes how much The Unborn suffered in the womb, and how far the spirit would go to protect Por's child¡K

About 'THE UNBORN'

The Origin

"In 2000, there was a news story on the front page of all the leading Thai daily papers," producer Prachya Pinkaew reveals. "It said that villagers in the remote countryside of Thailand had protested against the cremation of a pregnant woman who had died just before her delivery due date. They asked a spirit master to perform a ritual ceremony, involving postmortem dissection, to separate the dead woman and her unborn baby before ritual cremation. Can you imagine that, as we are move toward the new millennium, there are still people who believe in such supernatural things so strongly?"

After undertaking some further research, Prachya uncovered several intriguing cases involving not only spiritual beliefs but also criminal activity. Given his experience as a producer of several successful Thai films, he trusted his instincts that both Thai audiences and international moviegoers would warmly welcome this supernatural theme. He consulted with Bandit Thongdee, the veteran director who just wrapped 'Mondpleng Lukthoong FM', a comedy with an all-superstar ensemble cast. Bandit was looking for a completely different kind of project. "Horror was the obvious choice," Bandit states, "but what I didn't just want to do another cheap horror film. I really wanted to convey a special message to the audience. The story suggested by Prachya was very interesting. It's not just a typical, clichˆm ghost story. I was really glad that he came to me at the right moment."

After Nuttiya Sirakornwilai wrote the original story, Songsak Mongkolthong and the Ma-Tam-Nam team helped shape it into the final script. Bandit Thongdee, the director himself, was involved throughout the screenwriting process. "I thought the ghost should appear for a reason," explains the acclaimed director, "so I elaborated on the particular details of each appearance. The ghost should be in different scenarios with a variety of looks. For example, Mai comes as a mute in one scene, just to remind Por of her existence, then, in another scene, crawls along with her womb wide open to hint at her pregnancy, and finally appears as a human being in order to communicate with Por."

Cast of Characters

The main storyline of The Unborn focuses three mothers who go to the greatest of lengths to protect their children. Por, the lead, is only just aware of her pregnancy, Mai was murdered before she could give a birth, and Doctor Rudy is the mother of deceased daughter and a highly educated son.

Por is 22 years old, and works as a bartender at a nightclub. However, she makes most of her money working as a drug peddler for the thuggish Aod. She shares an apartment with her colleague, Gift, but lives there mostly on her own. The fact that Por has recently lost a shipment of drugs makes Aod so insane with anger, he tries to make Por pay with her own life. After recovering from the attempted drowning, Por has to face the challenge of her new supernatural power. Inthira Charoenpura is perfect in this role than, not only because of her acting skill, but also her own tough personality so resembles the character.

When she was 13 years old, Inthira won rave reviews from both the critics and the audience for her performance in the TV drama 'La' as a school girl who isolates herself from everyone after enduring a rape. Her career path spans television, films, and the music industry, as well as book publishing and writing.

Mai was a 21-year-old orphan studying in a teaching school. She was raised by her grandparents, and has a pure faith in love, a faith that leads her life to its tragic ending. Although much of her appearance takes the form of a ghost created by visual effects, Prangthong Changthom imbues role with her beautiful presence and sweet demeanour. It was these attributes that made her stand out from the very start of the casting process.

Another mother who is a constant in the film is Doctor Rudy. She is a resident doctor with a management position at a country hospital. Although she has a highly-educated son, she is still in mourning for her late daughter. When she meets Por, she is happy to treat her as a surrogate daughter. Aranya Namwong is a veteran actress who brings to the role of a 55-year-old mother her care for her own children.

Other characters involved in the story of these 3 mothers are:

Pat is a fresh young volunteer at Rehab Center. He is just 25 years old committed to helping all drug addicts to become sober, and finally kick their destructive habits. Karunpon Thieansuwan is a familiar face for TV viewers, but this will be his first ever role on the big screen. With his acting skills, he expresses his care for all the people around him, both physically and emotionally, very well.

Aod is the drug dealer who hires Por to peddle narcotics at a nightclub. He is 28 years old, talkative and willing to do whatever it takes to personally ensure the running of his illegal business. After his acclaimed role as a henchman in 'Ong Bak,' Wannakit Siriput is perfect in a role tailored-made for him.

By day, Prateep is a male nurse at the hospital, but, by night, he becomes an expert in the supernatural. He is about 30 years old, with many secrets, and his worse flaw is his lack of self-esteem. Kuensit Suwanwatthakee is a comedian who is had been looking for a challenging role, and jumped at this opportunity to show off his acting skills.

Thanit is a handsome 28-year-old instructor at college. His skill and dedication win him the admiration of everyone around him. Voravit Keawpet brings his inimitable charm to this role.

Gift is the workmate who shares an apartment room with Por, and always lends her a helping hand when necessary. Intra Werawattanachai portrays the role of an open-minded young lady who very much enjoys life in the fast lane.
