Sylvia

SYLVIA
Official Selection of Hong Kong Films Festival
The film tells the story of the relationship between the poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, and its relation to both Plath's psychological problems and her blossoming into one of the twentieth century's most important poets.
At the start of the film Sylvia Plath is a literary Wunderkind and with ambitions to be a great poet. Arriving in Cambridge on a Fulbright Scholarship she is a sparkle of bold, American colour against the more repressed English tweeds. When she reads the poetry of a young English graduate called Ted Hughes, she determines to meet him. Confronting him at a drunken launch party for a literary magazine, from the moment they meet their fate is inextricably intertwined.
Ted leaves his address and Sylvia eventually finds him in London, where he works and lives with like-minded beatniks who share his passion for poetry and the arts. After a drunken evening of poetry reciting with his friends, the two make love for the first time. During a glamorous and intense courtship in Cambridge and London Ted learns that Sylvia is the survivor of at least one failed suicide attempt, and troubled by her relationship with her dead father Otto.
They marry and set up home in London. Sylvia throws herself into her work, transforming their bedroom into a makeshift office and sending out their poetry to various publishers and competitions until they receive news that Ted has won the New York poetry prize. They are both ecstatic and as they travel to her Cape Cod family home, Sylvia dreams of all the novels she will write that summer. However, when she actually sits down to write, nothing comes. Ted tells Sylvia she must dig deeper with her writing, exposing the darker side of her personality.
Sylvia begins teaching English at Smith's College in order to support them both; it exhausts her and she finds she has little time to write. She becomes increasingly paranoid about Ted's attention to other women. This culminates in an ugly and violent argument over Ted's supposed dalliance with a female student at Smith's. Sylvia flies at Ted utterly intent upon hurting him just as he has hurt her.
Ted and Sylvia return to London and they set up home in Fitzroy Road, Primrose Hill. Sylvia gives birth to Frieda, and Ted begins to make a name for himself among the literary scene. Sylvia too receives some recognition for one of her poems from Al Alvarez, a prominent journalist, whom the couple befriend.
Once again they decide to move - this time to Devon - and make another new beginning, but in the process of letting their London flat they meet a couple called David and Assia Wevill. Ted and Assia are instantly attracted to one another, but the move to Devon seems to make any kind of a relationship impossible. Ted and Sylvia have a second child, Nicholas. However, when Assia and David visit the couple in their country home at Court Green, Sylvia becomes aware of the threat, but it is too late for her to prevent the inevitable. Ted and Assia begin an affair. At first Ted is racked with guilt and makes an effort to repair any damage to his marriage. It is all the encouragement Ted needs to leave her and join Assia in London. Ironically, the experience results in a poetic outpouring of astonishing force and Sylvia realizes she is writing the poems that will make her famous.
Partly in an attempt to escape the isolation she feels in Devon, and partly to keep the possibility of reconciliation with Ted alive, Sylvia moves back to London with their children, finding a home in Chalcot Square, Primrose Hill. But things don't go well with Ted, and amidst the hardest winter of the century, Sylvia's mental state deteriorates further until she realizes she is no longer capable of looking after the children.
In one last, desperate act she arranges to meet Ted and proposes that they try to forget everything that has happened and begin again. But although part of him wants to, Ted is forced to tell Sylvia that Assia is pregnant with his child. For Sylvia it is the final straw.
She tucks the children into their beds, protecting them from the cold as she opens a window. She then goes to the kitchen and puts her head in the oven. By morning the children are found by a nurse who has been sent to check that Sylvia is coping. Ted is devastated. He finds her good bye in the form of her poems (which later form the collection Ariel). Sylvia finally has the fame and success she once craved so much.
