MADHOUSE
SYNOPSIS
Once a respected mental health facility, Cunningham Hall is now a decaying relic with too many patients and too few dollars. But when an eager young medical student named Clark Stevens (Joshua Leonard) accepts an internship in the asylum to finish his degree, he soon finds himself reporting for duty in a MADHOUSE.
Cunningham Hall is run by the stern Dr. Franks (Lance Henriksen), who quickly puts Clark in his place before introducing him to the amiable Dr. Morton (Leslie Jordan) and the formidable Nurse Hendricks (Dendrie Taylor).
Clark also meets Sara (Jordan Ladd), a lovely young nurse who gives him a tour of the facility, including the dreaded basement, AKA the Madhouse, where the hopeless and extremely dangerous patients are housed. When a psychotic inmate attacks Clark, a hot-tempered security guard called Drake (Christian Leffler) saves his life, but warns him to stay out of the way. There is more than going on than meets the eye in the Madhouse, and Cunningham Hall has a past that Dr. Franks and the staff would rather forget.
Clark soon grows concerned with the condition of the patients, including Alice's (Natasha Lyonne) horrifying hallucinations and Carl's (Aaron Strongoni) suicidal tendencies. But Clark begins to question his own sanity when he sees the haunting figure of a young boy, who appears to be trying to warn him. Clark turns to Sara for help, and becomes increasingly attracted to her, but finds that even she has something to hide.
The strange happenings at Cunningham Hall suddenly take a sinister turn when Nurse Hendricks and Dr. Morton are brutally murdered. Dr. Franks orders Clark to interview the patients in the Madhouse, but it appears that none of them could be responsible. None except for Ben, who somehow seems to know everything that goes on in the asylum. He hides in the darkness of cell 44, and holds the key to the mystery of the strange boy, as well as the identity of the phantom killer who stalks the MADHOUSE.
MADHOUSE
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
A terrifying tale that blurs the line between paranoia and the paranormal, MADHOUSE is a supernatural whodunit, infused with humor and horror, which probes the ability of the human mind to create its own reality.
Writer/director William Butler wouldn't have it any other way. "I love movies about big spooky houses, I love the old Hammer films starring Vincent Price, and I love to focus on the psychological elements of the story. I wanted to make something smart to pay homage to all the great horror and suspense movies that I love, films like "The Shining" and "The Silence of the Lambs," he said.
Butler continued, "In particular, I was inspired by the 1961 film 'The Innocents,' which starred Deborah Kerr and Michael Redgrave, and was based on the novel by Henry James. Like that film, I wanted to create a story with an eerie atmosphere in which there was no easily recognizable villain."
Leading man Joshua Leonard, who portrays the inquisitive young medical student Clark Stevens with a quiet yet intense demeanor, has the perfect sensibility to satisfy Butler's vision. "Part of what the film addresses, which I find fascinating, is a really extreme version of the mind's capacity to manifest one's own reality. Who's to say that what someone experiences is not real? Who's to say that there's not a difference between the paranoid and the paranormal? If somebody's seeing something that someone else doesn't, who is the judge of whether it's actually real or not?" Leonard reflected.
Natasha Lyonne had her own brush with the unknown by playing the role of Alice, a patient at Cunningham Hall who experiences otherworldly hallucinations. "In the film, all of the patients in the asylum have gone untreated for so long that they are almost beyond hope. I had previously done a lot of research on mental health for another role I played, and visited patients in a state-run facility, said Lyonne."
"After observing them, it seemed possible to me that some of these people had been misdiagnosed because their extrasensory perception didn't fit into some therapists' version of normal mental health," she continued.
Playing the role of Sara, the dedicated young nurse with a secret, Jordan Ladd concurred with her co-stars regarding the psychological aspects of the film. "Right before I auditioned for the role of Sara, I had an experience with a good friend of mine who has been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. It broke my heart when he told about what it was like to suddenly not know if what you're experiencing is real or not. So I had a real and personal experience to inform my character's emotions," recalled Ladd.
Lance Henriksen's character, Dr. Franks, the stern director of Cunningham Hall, at first glance seems to be pretty straightforward. On his role, the venerable actor commented, "Franks is a bit of an institutional dud. He's so ineffectual; he's almost reached the point of despair of his patients. But he's got a sense of humor, which is important, because I think there is room for humor as long as you're not killing the tension."
The unexplainable happenings at the asylum drive Dr. Franks to seek some unorthodox explanations for the murder and mayhem taking place. In the film, he even reads books about ghosts and hauntings in an effort to get a grip on a situation spiraling out of control. "The location where we shot in Romania had the strangest vibe," recalled Henriksen. "It was actually a former asylum. You could feel the despair in the walls."
The location in question was the Lebada Hotel, a former palace turned mental asylum that is now a resort hotel on an island just outside the Romanian capital of Bucharest. Butler enthused, "With films like this often times the location is one of the biggest characters. The character of Cunningham Hall was reflected in the memories and secrets of the Lebada Hotel." Butler continued, "One night during the shoot I was watching the horror classic '13 Ghosts' on DVD in my cottage on the hotel grounds, when I heard this strange chanting. When I went outside to check it out, it turned out to be a Romanian priest blessing the hotel and the set, trying to exorcise its demons."
Paranormal attributes aside, the hotel also offered practical amenities that the cast appreciated. "The beauty of working on set at the hotel was that you could brush your teeth, wash your face, throw on some clothes and walk downstairs to work," said Ladd.
Leonard concurred, adding another perspective on the location: "There was a lake near the hotel where I would take a morning jog past Gypsy encampments and was followed by a pack of stray dogs every day. It was a definite break from my morning routine in LA and only helped to evoke the surrealism of the story and the setting."
Butler was thrilled with the hotel as the prime location for the film from the moment he set eyes on it. "My writing partner Aaron Strongoni and I wanted to write a film that could be shot all in one location. From the first night we were there, we realized that we didn't have to build anything…everything in the hotel was perfect," he recalled.
"Billy came to me with the idea of setting a horror film in an insane asylum," said co-writer Strongoni, who also plays the role of Carl in the film. "Billy had all these great ideas for scenes that could take place in a creepy old institution. When we found the Lebada Hotel in Bucharest, we found Cunningham Hall, he continued.
Recounting the experience of shooting on location in Romania, Leonard found the setting to be conducive to the part he played. "For an actor, it only helps to be in a secluded location that emotionally evokes the vibe you're trying to create in the film. The sense of isolation, due to the hotel's location, and its inherent creepiness, made it easier to create a sense of alienation than if we would have shot on a stage in Burbank," he said.
The film was shot on an unbelievably tight schedule-24 days-and Leonard worked on every single one of them, sometimes shooting several different scenes in one day. But Butler's previous work as an actor (he has a cameo role in the film) made the communication between director and actor so seamless that they were able to work together to achieve the desired results more quickly than under normal circumstances.
Recalling his experience on set under Butler's direction, Leonard commented, "Because Billy has a background in acting, it made it easier because he 'spoke the language,' so to speak. Billy also has a passion for the genre film, the horror film, and it's really exciting to have a director who loves and is schooled in the aesthetics of the genre. He has been studying it and loving it for years, and is able to pull from many different resources, but he also has the innate ability to show us things we've never seen before."
"Billy is the ideal director," said Jordan Ladd. "He encouraged Josh and me to visit a state-run mental health facility and interview the care givers, as he had done in his research for the film. Josh and I spent eight hours interviewing a psychiatrist who has to deal with some pretty hopeless cases on a daily basis. It was an eye opening experience that we were encouraged to bring to the table during filming."
"The fact that Billy gave us the freedom to do what we felt was right for our parts with what we got out of that experience shows his generosity as an actor, a director and a person. He really has an amazing vision, she continued."
Natasha Lyonne couldn't agree with her co-stars more when it comes to Butler's directing style. "Working with Billy was great-he made me feel immediately like one of his close friends-and his enthusiasm for the film affected everyone on set in such a positive way. He has the ability to guide you while letting you do what you feel is best for the role you're playing. Billy's has a great deal of integrity," said Lyonne.
ABOUT THE CAST
JOSHUA LEONARD
CLARK
Joshua Leonard first garnered worldwide attention for his memorable role in 1999's most talked about film "The Blair Witch Project." He was most recently seen in HBO's "Live from Baghdad," opposite Michael Keaton, Lili Taylor and Helena Bonham Carter. Leonard also recently starred in "Two Days," opposite Paul Rudd; "Shooting Livian," about a rock and roll band on the verge of self destruction, with Sarah Wynter; "LArceny" for director Irving Schwartz and Showtime's "Things Behind the Sun" for director Allison Anders, which premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival.
Leonard received rave reviews for his portrayal of a bank manager in the heist film "Scorched," which stars Woody Harrelson, Rachel Leigh Cook and Alicia Silverstone. Leonard was also seen alongside Robert DeNiro and Cuba Gooding Jr. in 20th Century Fox's "Men of Honor," and starred with the ensemble cast of MGM/UA's "Deuces Wild" which was produced by Martin Scorsese.
He also appeared in John Herzfeld's ("15 minutes," "Two Days in the Valley") TV pilot "Destiny" for CBS, in which Leonard portrayed a poetic yet paranoid cab driver. In 2003, he made his directorial debut with a music video for Interscope's "Campfire Girls," followed by a video for Mpress Records' recording artist Rachael Sage. Leonard is currently co-directing the feature documentary "Beautiful Losers" about a group of internationally renowned street artists. He is also set to produce "Live From Death Row," a biopic of author, political prisoner and death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Prior to feature films, Leonard performed onstage with the revolutionary Living Theater group in New York City. Leonard has also parlayed his creative energy in other mediums: he has worked extensively in the New York indie film scene as a freelance videographer and editorial photographer.
JORDAN LADD
SARA
Though her acting debut came at age 2, opposite James Garner in a Polaroid commercial, Jordan Ladd was last seen on screen starring alongside the Broken Lizard Comedy Troupe ("Super Troopers") and Bill Paxton in Fox Searchlight's comedy caper "Club Dread." In 2003, she appeared in the hit thriller "Cabin Fever," released by Lions Gate.
She previously portrayed a snotty high school student who tormented the likes of Drew Barrymore and Leelee Sobieski in 20th Century Fox's romantic-comedy "Never Been Kissed." She also had a star turn in the dysfunctional superhero saga, "The Specials," along with Rob Lowe and Jamie Kennedy.
Ladd also appeared with Mimi Rogers and Gabriel Byrne in the acclaimed HBO feature, "Weapons Of Mass Destruction," as well as the Gregg Araki-helmed "Nowhere," in which she portrayed a spiritually-minded sexpot.
Ladd also recently guest starred on Alan Ball's acclaimed HBO series "Six Feet Under." In addition, she has starred in E! Entertainment Television's first original production, "Best Actress," as well as the Lifetime Original telefilm "The Deadly Look Of Love" opposite Vincent Spano.
Ladd recently wrapped the comedy "Waiting" opposite Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris, and Luis Guzman. On the horizon is the independent feature "The Perfect You" as well as the thriller "Puzzled."
NATASHA LYONNE
ALICE
Natasha Lyonne will next be seen in "America Brown," which is set to premiere at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. She also recently starred in the black comedy "Max and Grace" with Tim Blake Nelson, and the third installment of the blockbuster trilogy "Blade: Trinity," both of which will hit screens later this year.
Lyonne's break-out role came in 1998 when she portrayed awkward teenager Vivian Abramowitz in "Slums of Beverly Hills." The role garnered immense critical praise.
Successfully moving between challenging independent films and studio box office hits has fared well for the talented actress. Other credits include Woody Allen's musical "Everyone Says I Love You," "But I'm A Cheerleader," "American Pie," "Party Monster," "Kate and Leopold," "Scary Movie 2," and "Die Mommie Die." In 2001, she starred in the holocaust drama "The Grey Zone," in which she credits herself with her best work.
Her professional career began at the age of six, when she starred as Opal in the original "Pee Wee's Playhouse." After a role on the soap opera "As the World Turns," she made her feature film debut as Meryl Streep's niece in the Mike Nichols film "Heartburn."
LANCE HENRIKSEN
DR. FRANKS
Born in New York, Henriksen studied at the Actors Studio and began his career Off Broadway in Eugene O'Neill's "Three Plays of the Sea." One of his first film appearances was for director Sidney Lumet in "Dog Day Afternoon," followed by Lumet's "Network" and "Prince of the City."
Henriksen then appeared in several other high profile movies including "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Damien: Omen II." He became well known for his portrayal of Mercury astronaut Lieutenant Commander Walter Schirra, Jr. in "The Right Stuff," directed by Philip Kaufman.
James Cameron cast Henriksen in "The Terminator" and then featured him as the android Bishop in the sci-fi classic "Aliens." Director Sam Raimi, who cast the actor in "The Quick and the Dead" opposite Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman, said, "Lance is a brilliant performer who goes way beyond acting. He becomes his character completely, leaving no trace of his former self and making something of every moment on screen."
In 1996, Henriksen starred for three seasons in "Millennium," Fox's critically acclaimed series from "X-FiIes" creator/producer Chris Carter. Henriksen's performance as Frank Black, a retired FBI agent who has the ability to get inside the minds of killers, garnered three consecutive Golden Globe nominations and a People's Choice Award nomination.
Soon to be released are two independent features which exemplify the diversity of Henriksen's talent: in "One Point O" he plays a homeless person opposite Jeremy Sisto, and in "Modigliani" he stars with Andy Garcia as Charles Foster Kane.
Most recently, Henriksen finished shooting the lead role in 20th Century Fox's "Alien Vs. Predator," the highly anticipated summer blockbuster directed by Paul Anderson.
