The curse of the faceless

<FACE> deals with human faces that express both beauty and ugliness, and all other human feelings. The story stems from a heartburning, a word that represents straightforwardly the emotion of the Orient.

The face is a first impression on others. It shows either beauty or ugliness, and expresses all human feelings whether they're good or bad. What if you were murdered with your face erased? What impact would that leave on those left behind? How big would the grudge be of the dead if the person that died were unable to let the world know his or her identity? <FACE> is a story about a girl who has lost her face, and a man who tries to find back her face.

Face reconstruction, restoring faces from nothing but skulls and a combination of art and science, is a sophisticated technique of crime investigation. In the film, it's used as a medium that derives horror and sadness of the wrongfully dead.

Being the first Korean film that deals with face reconstruction, combined with Korean emotions, the film will surely provide horror that's never been felt before.

2004, the first horror opens its eyes!

<Face>, the curse of the faceless

The face is gone. So is the whole body. What's left are the skull and bones. Now, the faceless comes back with a curse. <Face> is a horror film that tells the grudge and curse of this faceless ghost. Since the huge box-office success of <Whispering Corridors>, followed by <Phone> in 2000, horror films have dominated the market every summer. Last summer, <A Tale of Two Sisters> became a smashing hit, selling over 3 million tickets. Its success is thanks to the fact that the story and theme struck the right chord of Korean moviegoers. <FACE> is a story about a faceless ghost, crossing the line between life and death. Its appalling twist will put the viewers in a state of shock, as <The Sixth Sense> and <The Others> did.

A horror film with a new style!

Unprecedented story that's never tried before

The story of <FACE> has never been tried in any other Korean films before. Furthermore, it takes a different approach to how to induce horror. Other horror films used places or gadgets such as cell phones or videotapes as sources of horror. However, <FACE> uses face reconstruction, which is somewhat unfamiliar but terrifying enough. Face reconstruction is a sophisticated forensic technique used to ID the victim with a skull when DNA tests are not an option. It's not just science. Facials muscles and flesh are made with clay, applied to the skull, and then the photo-like face is drawn on the monitor with the help of cutting-edge computer graphics. In other words, face reconstruction is a combination of science and art. <FACE> goes beyond simple rules of how to implant horror in the minds of viewers, sending a wave of absolute fear through their spines.

It's their job to deliver the curse!

<FACE>, their first horror film

It's not very common that top actors and actresses are cast for a horror film, because they don't want to go thought the nightmare while shooting it. However, it wasn't the case for <FACE>. It's the first horror movie that SHIN Hyun-jun and SONG Yoon-ah star in, two of the most-sought-after stars in the Korean film industry. Reading the script, SHIN decided to star in it on the spot, and has participated actively even from the pre-production. And it was him who recommended SONG for the female lead in the film, who also decided to shine the film with her appearance upon reading the script. Her character named Sun-young helps Hyun-min (starred by SHIN Hyun-jun) reconstruct faces of murder victims. Sun-young is a very bright and decisive character, but dark and mysterious at the same time. SHIN plays a character that suffers from a series of nightmares and illusion, completely different from other characters that he has played in other films, mostly either charismatic or comic ones.

First Korean horror film to be sold before its release!

Pre-sale of $200 thousand to Asian countries

<FACE> is the first Korean horror film that has been exported before its domestic release. In March, at AFM, one of the biggest film markets, it was sold to various countries for a total amount of 200 thousand US dollars. This was achieved with only a-minute- 45-second-long demo trailer. Compared to <Taegukgi> that sold for 1 million US dollars, the pre-sale of <FACE> beat the industry's expectation, considering that it hasn't been released yet. It was sold to such Asian countries as Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, and European countries showed special interests in it. It's said that the unique sound and intense picture of <FACE> shocked buyers at the American Film Market. As Asian horror films such as <A Tale of Two Sisters>, <Ring>, and <The Eye> are viewed carrying Asian emotions, <FACE> received special interests for its scientific theme of face reconstruction and Oriental emotion of revenge.

I want my face back¡K

The dead wants the world to know who they were

Its body melted down, a skull is found by the river. It's the fourth skull. There are no other ways to identify the victim but face reconstruction. However, Hyun-min (starred by SHIN Hyun-jun), a face reconstruction specialist at National Institute of Scientific Investigation, decides the leave the Institute. To him, saving his daughter who gets sicker by the day is more important. One day, a researcher named Sun-young (starred by SONG Yoon-ah) shows up at his doorstep with the forth skull. However, Hyun-min refuses to take the job.

Now I know why you torment me¡K

I'll find you your face back

Against Hyun-min's refusal to take the job, Sun-young disappears leaving the skull behind in his house. Oddly enough, with the skull's arrival, Hyun-min begins to suffer from nightmares and illusions. In the meantime, the police find out that all the victims had a unique body composition called Beta-allergy, and the murders were associated with heart transplants. Hyun-min realizes that his daughter's transplanted heart comes from one of the victims and begins to work on the fourth skull. With Sun-young's help, he finally reconstructs the skull. However, as the victim's identity is known, he falls into a deeper world of nightmares and illusions.

There is another dead body¡K

A face reconstruction

What's face reconstruction?

Face reconstruction was originally used to restore the original forms of the remains, and then applied to crime investigation later on. In general, when a dead body is found, fingerprints or DNA tests are used to identify the victim. However, when the fingerprints have been erased, or protein needed for a DNA test isn't sufficient, a specialist steps in to analyze the conditions of the skull, build facial muscles, and finally reconstruct the face. Using his anatomic knowledge, the specialist sculptures the face and compares it with the photos of the missing to identify the victim.

The process of face reconstruction?

To reconstruct a face using a skull, the sex and age should be estimated above all. Then, the average thickness of various muscles of the sampling group is measured with regard to the skull's shape. First, Muscles and flesh are made with clay and applied to the skull to form a rough shape. Then, a cutting-edge computer graphic program is used to concrete the face. In the film, Hyun-min builds a rough face with clay, and then uses computers to compare it with photos of missing people to reach a conclusion.

The success rate of identifying victims through face reconstruction?

There's research that says that 51% of pending missing person cases have been solved in America alone since the introduction of face reconstruction, which is quite high, beating everyone's expectations. In Korea, for a period of 15 months from September 1999, the face of the first Korean Catholic priest, KIM Dae-gun who died a martyr in 1846 was reconstructed. Professor HANG Seung-ho, the only face reconstruction specialist in the country, led the project.

Production Note

3 years of writing the script and 1 year of preparation

"Horror you've never felt before"

There are so many unsolved cases in this world. The bodies of crime victims are often damaged on purpose, and their identities stay unknown. How would the dead feel if they were killed, but nobody knew who they were? <FACE> stems from this idea that the dead can't speak, but they would want themselves known to the real world with a curse. Three years of effort in the development of the script pays off.

Both the director and writer of <FACE>, Director YOO Sang-gon received Best Short Film Award for "The Corner" at Fribourg International Film Festival, and has been showing his talents in various films since. <FACE> is his first feature film. It took him 3 years to write the script for <FACE>, and his effort has surely paid off. A thriller-like tension and a unique story concerning face reconstruction are well mingled in the film, scary enough to make you flinch. There's no doubt that <FACE> will be the first well-made horror movie that will open the doors into the summer of year 2004.

SHIN Hyun-jun and SONG Yoon-ah pull it off!

"Nobody could deliver complex characters better than they did"

Casting for the film, they put an emphasis on actors' experience, not on their looks. Hyun-min is intelligent and cold but is willing to suffer to save his daughter. Sun-young is merry, but dark at the same time. These characters can't be brought to life with the actors' looks.

SHIN Hyun-jun was cast for the character of Hyun-min, for he's one of a few actors who has both charismatic and comic qualities to him. When he was offered the role, he was busy shooting <Blue>. However, upon reading the script, he decided to start in it on the spot. The script was fascinating enough to drive a spirit of challenge out of him.

SONG Yoon-ah was cast with the recommendation of her fellow actor SHIN and the director himself. Director YOO knew that she'd had experience with a horror film, and thought she was fit for the character that is both bright and dark. SONG says she felt horror beyond description after reading the script and couldn't sleep for a few days.

Two months of training on face reconstruction

"I think I can tell now the sex and the age of a skull upon first look"

Face reconstruction is most modern, but most primitive at the same time. Unfamiliar to Korean movie fans, it's widely used in America as a way of identifying the crime victims. The first case of face reconstruction was KIM Dae-gun, the first Catholic priest who died a martyr back in 1846. Director YOON was fascinated by this forensic technique in the sense that it's a marvelous work of art combined with science. His fascination has led to cause the conflict between analog and digital ways in the film.

SHIN Hyun-jun and SONG Yoon-ah had to go through training by a face reconstruction specialist for two months prior to the beginning of production. They say that they were actually scared applying clay to the skulls, as if they were looking at real dead bodies. Furthermore, their fingers would go numb from dealing with the hard clay for long time spans. Superficially, it looks like a simple process of pasting clay on the skulls, however, it's a very complicated process well planned ahead of time. They say that they have become so familiar with the skulls shooting the film that they can tell the sex and the age of a skull upon first look.

A challenge for a new style!

"We welcome you to the world of nightmares filled with screams"

Various new approaches were made for <FACE>. Maintaining the conventional colors and sound of horror films, the director and the crew made other preparations as well to make it stand out from the crowd. Director YOON maintained the monotone of blue throughout the film. He also used various colors with an emphasis on red and yellow. This was to describe the complex characters' state of minds more passionately and to leave a lingering impact on the audience. Another important fact used in the film to maximize the fear is the sound. He intentionally let songs for the funeral flow throughout the film to express the grudge of the dead. Hearing it, the audience will feel themselves falling into the marsh where they can't get out no matter how hard they try.

YOON Ye-ryung, Master of special makeup in the Korean film industry

"She brought out the real ghost"

Two types of special makeup were used in the film. One was for melted-down bodies and faces, the other for faces to be reconstructed. The special effect of a body melting down was done using a life-size rubber body made to melt down as a special chemical was poured upon it. And the several skulls were made with the help of a face reconstruction specialist to show different steps of the process.

Real terror swept the set!

"I scare you more by screaming than the ghost does?"

The theory that says men are more susceptible to fear than women holds true for the two main characters of <FACE>. During the shooting, SONG Yoon-ah wasn't scared at all when the crew was shivering with ghost stories. She says she's a mania for horror movies. However, it's not the case for SHIN Hyun-jun. On the set, he got scared quite often, to everyone's surprise. Consequently, he made quite a few technical mistakes on the set. To act naturally, he didn't look at the ghost-turned actress before the shoot. And, when he did, he screamed loudly, which in turn scared the cameraman or a recording technician, as well as other crew on the set. You can witness his couldn't-be-more-real screams in the film.

Cast and Crew

JUNG Sun-young, starred by SONG Yoon-ah

She's a newcomer to the National Institute of Scientific Investigation. She's bright and determined. She gives up living on easy street as a physician and dreams about being a face reconstruction specialist. She feels for Hyun-min who suffers from nightmares and illusions as she assists him to reconstruct a skull. However, as she finds the fifth skull, she confronts the most dreaded truth.

SONG Yoon-ah calls out the curse of the dead

She was an evil woman in <Mr. Q>. She was a tomboy in <Jail Breaker>. She has no limit as an actress, playing various characters of one extreme to another. <FACE> is her first horror movie. She says she was captivated by the power of the script that stimulates one's emotions with the ghost's grudge. She's sure that <FACE> will leave a lingering horror in the minds of the audience, rather than providing them with instant momentary scares. There's no doubt that no other actress could deliver the character of Sun-young who is intelligent and happy, but dark at the same time.

TV Dramas

LEE Hyun-min, starred by SHIN Hyun-jun

He's a face reconstruction specialist at the National Institute of Scientific Investigation. To look after his daughter suffering from side effects after a heart transplant, he decides to leave the Institute. One day Sun-young leaves a skull for him to work on in the house, which leads to the biggest nightmare for him.

SHIN Hyun-jun falls into the curse of the dead

We remember him as Hayashi in <General's Son>, General HWANG in <The Gingko Bed>, and a stupid killer in <Guns & Talks>. From a charismatic figure to a comic one, he's been pushing himself over the boundaries as an actor. In his entire career that spans for over 10 years, a horror movie was the only genre that was new to him. In <The Soul Guardians>, he played a charismatic character. However, he'd never played a character as fragile before fear as his character in <FACE>. He says he was so fascinated by the script and its genre being both a thriller and horror. He adds that has high expectations for the film, since he has participated in it since the pre-production.

Films

Detective SUH, starred by KIM Seung-wook

He's a detective who's after a serial killer. He's determined, comprehensive, and confident. A series of killings in which the victims' bodies are all melted down becomes the biggest challenge in his career. To make the matter worse, Hyun-min refuses to reconstruct the skulls, and he has no lead to solve the case.

He's been active on both big and small screen. Being a proud stage actor, he's second to none when it comes to analyzing the character and delivering it accordingly. In <Married to the Mafia> and <The Scent of Love>, he was loved by the audience more than the leading characters as a spice in them. Now he's back as Detective SUH in <FACE>, a character that maintains the tension throughout the film that's easily broken in horror movies.

Films

Dr. YOON, starred by AHN Suk-hwan

He's a heart transplant specialist, who operates only on those with rare compositions called Beta-allergy. He operates on Hyun-min's daughter for a heart transplant. However, as she shows severe side effects, he forges the surgery record and won't tell Hyun-min whom the donor was.

He hasn't been showing his talents only on the big screen, but also on stage. The characters he's played vary dramatically from a neighborhood bum, to a mafia boss, to a next-door old man. In <FACE>, he plays a heart surgeon who has it all, and plays an important role in leading the plot.

Cast and Crew

Director YOO Sang-gon

Most-sought-after star director of short films

"I wanted to give it a feeling of Catharsis through maximized fear"

If you're in the film business, the chances are very high that you've heard of him. He's a star director when it comes to short films. Having dreamed of becoming a film director watching Hollywood films on TV when he was teenager, he concreted his dream studying films at KyungSung University and at ESEC in Paris, France. His short film, <Drifting>, was invited to Wide Angle at the first Busan Film Festival in 1996. He received international acclaim as <The Corner> was awarded Best Short Film Award at the 12th Fribourg International Film Festival. Since then, he's put out marvelous short films such as <Body Temperature>, <The Unfit>, and <Superman in Early Summer>.

He's the most-sought-after director in the Korean film industry. And he made a feature film directorial debut with <FACE>. He wanted to make the audience shiver with fear through the story, not gadgets or special effects. He says, "I wanted to give it a feeling of Catharsis though maximized fear." And the film turned out just as he intended. <FACE> will undoubtedly hit the box-off hard and be remembered as the first horror movie that dominated the summer season.

Cinematography CHOI Gi-yul

He's a delicate magician who bridges drama with image

As shown in <Mr. Butterfly> and <Blue>, he's one of few camera directors in the country who can freeze the moments on a big scale. He's second to none in capturing actors' emotions on camera, and such a talent is well shown in <FACE>. It wouldn't have been impossible, if it weren't for him, to convey horror in the film that's more than just hair-raising sequences. The unstable state of mind and tension of the moments are well melted down in the film thanks to him.

Films, as Camera Director

Lighting KIM Sun-hwa

She created lights that broke the rules of horror films

It's her first feature film as a lighting director. This is due to the fact that <FACE> used lights that weren't welcomed in other horror films. Most horror films use the color blue to maintain the mysterious tone of the film. However, KIM Soon-hwa used the mixture of yellow and red to portray the revenge of the ghost and emotional conflicts among characters. As a new kid on the block, she pulled off her first job successfully, and the director couldn't be more satisfied.

Special makeup YOON Ye-ryung

Master of special makeup in the Korean film industry

Until the mid 1990s, story materials of Korean films were quite limited. 10 years have passed now, and virtually everything can be turned into a film, largely thanks to the development of special makeup. Standing in the center is YOON Ye-ryung. Through <The Gingko Tree>(1996), she raised the standard of special makeup in Korean films to an unprecedented level by creating reality out of fantasy. Through errors and trials in such films as <The Soul Guardians>, <Ghost in Love>, and <The Ring>, she has been the leading figure in advancing special makeup in the Korean film industry. Her talents are well shown in <FACE> as well. Even though face reconstruction was unfamiliar material for a movie, she successfully created skulls and faces by the step, and they were real enough to scare those who looked at them. In short, she's a magician who turns fantasies into reality.

Music LEE Han-na

A music director recognized by DaeJong Award

After 8 years of experience as a music director in various TV commercials, she made her debut as music director for <Road Movie>(2002), in which her work was honored with a DaeJong Award. The pain of a tragic love in <Road Movie> was well maximized by the work of LEE Han-na, and now that pain turns into revenge of the ghost in <FACE>. What she focused in the film was the Oriental sentiment of a heartburning. Using ethnic instruments, she created the sound unheard of in other horror films. There's no doubt that she will be a music director that enriches the barren land of Korean film music circles.
