The Company
(Joffrey Ballet of Chicago)

THE COMPANY
Synopsis
THE COMPANY follows the complex lives, loves, dramas and triumphs of a company of aggressively talented dancers over a season at the world-renowned Joffrey Ballet.
At the centre of this ensemble is Ry (Neve Campbell) a tough, gifted and dedicated dancer. After an injury is sustained by her colleague Maia she is given the chance to take a step closer to becoming a principal dancer, a move which is made even harder after Frankie, a fellow dancer and boyfriend cheats on her with Emily another member of the company.
All the dancers in the company are constantly pushed to their physical and emotional limits by the flamboyant and charismatic choreographer and company director Mr. A (Malcolm McDowell), His forceful personality is the driving force behind the company and he nurtures with an equal measure of love and cruelty.
Mr. A is only concerned with one thing, The Company, but it is the performances that take precedent while people's real lives pale into insignificance. Young apprentice John finds it hard to meet the taxing physical tests the day brings, while at night he desperately searches for a place to live, from kitchen floors to hallway cupboards. Nothing is taken into consideration by Mr. A. Injuries, sickness, circumstances are all ignored as the drive to put the show on and keep the company afloat are all encompassing.
During the daily battles for perfection Ry tries to forget her trouble with Frankie, and concentrate on the high expectation put upon her as well as the trying to hold down a night job as a waitress in a Goth nightclub. Her job takes her to a world as far removed from The Company than any other member manages to get, but her evening commitments put a strain on her dancing abilities. A light soon emerges from the darkness of her daily grind when she meets the handsome and attentive chef, Josh (James Franco).
As the season unfolds, egos collide between the two young choreographers, Davis and Eldridge, as they compete for space in the final show, while the extravagant Desrosier's ever expanding ballet, the 'Blue Snake', pushes the dancers and financial administrators to their limits.
Insecurities take over the members as they compete for positions and attention, trying to constantly prove themselves with the fear of loosing their place. Justin a new apprentice finds it all too much, trying to find his feet, literally, in the world as well as in the insular company. Justin is guided by a mentor, but everyone is not as lucky, Valerie and Mark are struck off the rehearsal list without even an explanation
Things seem to be going well for Ry as the final performance of the extravagant 'Blue Snake' approaches. True love has blossomed between her and Josh and the relationship seems to keep her positive as the pressures of work, her mother and ballet continue to take their toll. Not everyone has something to cling on to as Deborah, the longest standing member of the company is refused her pay rise as she took time off for cancer treatment.
Art becomes a war of attrition, as the season reaches its finale and Ry suffers a serious injury, and as ever one dancer's misery is another's opportunity. As the season finishes, another begins and a new group of dancers furiously compete for the limited places made available by the victims of the previous year.
THE COMPANY glides seamlessly through the array of dedicated and troubled characters, through the complex company politics, through the auditions, rehearsals and finally to the performances, which the company hopes makes all their sacrifices worth the pain and suffering they have to endure.
About the Director
Robert Altman follows up the stunning success of the Academy Award winning GOSFORD PARK with THE COMPANY, a look at the world of ballet as only Altman could envision it.
Throughout his extraordinary career, Altman has surprised, entertained and challenged audiences with vibrant, freewheeling films that stretch the boundaries of the medium. With THE COMPANY, this iconic director brings his signature ensemble and improvisatory style, and his fluid, masterful camera-work to the world of dance. Altman's vision for the film is an extremely intimate one: we will see the difficult daily work, the enormous pressures of performance, the richly textured behaviors of the dancers -- whose professional and personal lives grow impossibly close -- and of course the sheer beauty of the dances: exhilarating, kinetic, and thrillingly observed.
The authenticity and richness of THE COMPANY will be rooted in the unprecedented way Altman is shooting the film: with the complete cooperation of the world-famous Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Screenwriter Barbara Turner (POLLACK, GEORGIA) spent over two years on and off with the Joffrey, observing and writing. Joffrey dancers will constitute the core of Altman's ensemble.
About the Cast
The only actor who will be working as part of the Joffrey corps is Neve Campbell (the enormously popular SCREAM movies and the television show "Party of Five"). Campbell, an accomplished dancer, studied with The National Ballet of Canada before becoming an actress. She originated THE COMPANY, the culmination of a long-held dream to create a nuanced and realistic film about a world for which she has enormous and abiding affection. Campbell's role in the film is that of a gifted but conflicted company member on the verge of becoming a principal dancer. (Campbell has been working intensively with the Joffrey and will do all of her own dancing in the film.)
Malcolm McDowell (A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, O LUCKY MAN!, GANGSTER NO. 1), will play Gerald Arpino, the Joffrey's Artistic Director, long considered to be one of America's greatest and most exciting living choreographers. Actor James Franco (SPIDERMAN and JAMES DEAN, for which he won a Golden Globe this year) will portray Cal, one of the film's few characters outside of the dance world and the boyfriend of the dancer Campbell portrays.
