Roger Ebert & Richard Roeper, Ebert @ Roper

"Powerful! A visceral adventure film! Exciting, beautiful and thought-provoking!"
Steve Rosen, The Denver Post

"A spell-binding and emotional experience!"
William Wolf, Wolf Entertainment Guide

"A powerful film"
Leah Rozen, People

"'There were tears, for instance, and a much-deserved Audience Award for Phillip Noyce's 'Rabbit-Proof Fence', arriving after a media whirlwind in Australia, where conservative opinion attempted to discredit its true story of the stolen generation of half-caste children removed from Aboriginal parents by government officers. An emotive yet lucid tribute to the spirit and resilience of those indigenous people, it's not just a great film, but a genuinely important one."
Time Out (London)

"The Standard Life Audience Award was won by Rabbit-Proof Fence. It had led the poll from its first screening at the festival and was described by the artistic director, Shane Danielson as 'a great film and an important film'."
Screen International

"Rabbit Proof Fence is unquestionably one of the best films of the year. Masterfully directed, visually hypnotic, it redefines Phillip Noyce as one of the truly great filmmakers of his generation, and a first-class master of cinematic narrative. Great music, breathtaking cinematography and a haunting film of one of Australia's most distressing tragedies. This is a film that everyone should make a point of seeing, it's a remarkable ,powerful and extraordinary film."
Paul Fisher - Dark Horizons

"A very good movie…very impressive."
Didier Allouch - CANAL PLUS

"Wow, I loved the movie. It was very powerful."
Mike Szymanski / ZAP2IT.COM

Emotions have run high at the Edinburgh Film Festival this year, where Phillip Noyce's Rabbit-Proof Fence has emerged as a popular and critical triumph, moving many to tears. It is a tremendously impassioned, beautifully made drama about Australia's 'stolen generations' - aboriginal children who were forcibly removed from their parents and raised in white run environments at the behest of the government. Set in the 1930's - though this practice continued until the 70's - the film is based on a true life story. It follows three girls who escape from their resettlement camp and embark on an epic odyssey back to their mothers across thousands of miles of desert. Noyce's direction is first class, bringing together stunning images from Wong Kar Wai's regular cinematographer Christopher Doyle and rousing music by Peter Gabriel. The film belongs, though, to the three girls, who deliver utterly convincing and effective performances, despite never having acted before.
Daily Telegraph (U.K.)

"(Rabbit Proof Fence is) a stunningly realised historical epic"
The Herald (Scottish daily paper)

"This beautifully understated and lyrical film works on a number of levels: as a political statement; a dramatic thriller and as a 'road movie'. The result is a cinematic work of the highest quality."
Daily News (South Africa 30-8-02)

"A stunning piece of work, with stand-out performances to match. The fact that the tale rings absolutely true sends a shudder through even the most hardened of hearts. A vital film for our times."
Empire Magazine (Australia)

"Absorbing, Moving and Heartwarming."
Louise Keller - www.urbancinefile.com.au

"An extraordinary story of human spirit overcoming all odds. Inspiring, moving and visually stunning."
Jody Scott - ELLE Magazine

"Flawless
*****"
Herald Sun - Melbourne

"Inspirational"
Variety

"Excellent Moving"
Screen International

"Tightly made and richly rewarding, expect 'Fence' to cross over to a mainstream audience. This is a powerful film that speaks in universal terms about an important issue whilst going straight for the heart."
The Hollywood Reporter

I also adored "Rabbit-Proof Fence" (North American premiere). Australian director Philip Noyce said, "This film got started when my phone rang at 3 a.m. in LA, where I was living in a golden cage, and a woman on the other end said she'd found the best script for me." It tells the true story of three (of thousands) half-caste Aboriginal girls in the early 1930s who were forcibly taken from their families and placed in a government sponsored retraining program, and of their determination to return home. It's an incredibly moving, dramatic, and well-acted account of an unconscionable time in Australia's history.
IndieWIRE - Diana Hotlzberg

Another defiant girl is the subject of Philip Noyce's absorbing true-life drama, "Rabbit Proof Fence," which features the ferocious 11-year-old (now 13-year-old) novice Everlyn Sampi, along with two other girls, Tianna Sansbury and Laura Monaghan. They play "half-castes" (half-white,half-Aborigine) who escape a government institution and trek 1,500 miles home, evading the police and an aboriginal tracker. Sampi's character is tough, resourceful and stubborn--apparently not unlike Sampi herself. Noyce found her in a settlement called Djarindjin, in far northwestern Australia.
Although she knew television, she'd never been in a movie theater and had no interest in becoming an actress. But Noyce turned a camera on her and discovered that she had "it," and induced her to join the picture. She ran away twice before the cameras rolled. "Everlyn Sampi has a healthy disrespect for authority," Noyce says ruefully.
Loa Angeles Times - John Clark

Set in 1931, this stirring film by Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games) tells the true story of the perilous bid for freedom of three young girls who escape detention and set out on a 2,400-kilometre quest to find their homes, following a path marked by the rabbit-stopping fences used by farmers across the length and breadth of Australia.
Rabbit-Proof Fence is a movie of adventure, courage and spirit, revealing the best and worst in human nature and introducing terrific new talent. Consider this a leading contender to win the audience award at this year's film fest.
TORONTO STAR - Peter Howell

Rabbit-Proof Fence chronicles the desperate story of three young half-castes girls who are, under Australian Law, taken away from their families and placed into a government operated missionary. After a short stay in this unfamiliar place, the girls embark on a heroic and difficult journey back to their homes along the rabbit-proof fence. The film effectively takes its time to tell the story of this "stolen generation," sufficiently informing the audience and providing necessary context as the situation evolves. In addition to seeing how the girls are being affected by this cruel and unjust law, the film also shows its viewers how the rest of Australian society is reacting to this system. An example of this can be seen in the many scenes involving the head of this program, chief Riggs -played by Kenneth Branagh- trying to convince his people of the legitimacy of this evil scheme. I would have however enjoyed more character development, particularly with the girls who seemed to lack significant coloration.
The film is brilliantly photographed,, by the master Christopher Doyle, who uses geographical space to reveal the misery and isolation of the Aboriginal people. The pacing of the film is exceptional, slowly carrying the viewer along this journey with the girls while concurrently uncovering the greater context of this situation, without having it feel distracting or tangential.

AIN'T IT COOL NEWS

a work of beauty, power, and grace. Based on Doris Pilkington's fact-based book, it is perhaps Noyce's best film to date, a shattering indictment of past injustice and a glorious testament to human courage and endurance. It has been many years since Noyce devoted himself to the concerns of his native country. It was worth the wait. Molly's long trek through the outback, her devotion to the younger girls, and her unstinting belief in the outcome of her journey are unforgettable. And so is Noyce's evocative film.
Reel.Com - Pam Grady

Rabbit-Proof Fence is an outstanding film, filled with a restraint and emotional honesty that seem to characterize the Aboriginal people in the film. It should be compulsory viewing for every man, woman and child on the planet.
The Independent on Sunday - South Africa

Wendy Ide/Uncut

'The final scene of the film contains an appearance and a revelation of astonishing power; not since "Schindlers List" have I been so overcome with the realization that real people, in recent historical times, had to undergo such inhumanity.'
Roger Egbert, Albany Times Union

'Three elements make the movie- a story of deep love and loss, an electric child actor in Everlyn Sampi and an Australian landscape so harsh it makes the American Southwest look like a suburban park.'
Sheila Norman, Albany Daily Gazette

'The long walk home depicted in Phillip Noyce's 'Rabbit Proof Fence' is the sort of inspirational heart- tugger Hollywood couldn't possibly come up with. That's because its true.'
Eleanor Ringel Gillespie, Atlanta Journal Constitution

'I love 'Rabbit Proof Fence' as drama, as protest, as moviemaking and as poetry.'
'Director Noyce has always been a notable Australian talent…But in 'Rabbit Proof Fence' Noyce finds a pure tenacious voice that communicates with the viewer heart to heart.'
'Noyce puts the audience right in there with them, too, superbly honing the words of Christine Olsen's script and the sights and sounds of two wonder-struck collaborators, cinematographer Chris Doyle and composer Peter Gabriel.'
'From the opening moment, you know you are in the hands of masters.'
Mike Sragow, Baltimore Sun

'Based on a true incident, the film is a must see.'

Jim Santello, Buffalo News

'Mr Noyce found three youngsters with no theatrical training to play the girls, and he extracts marvelously natural performances from all three.'
' The scene in which the girls are first taken, literally dragged screaming from their mothers is perhaps the most emotionally charged moment that Mr. Noyce has ever put on film.'
Margaret McGurk, Cincinnati Enquirer

'Rabbit Proof Fence, which may be the most amazing and harrowing true story you will ever see'.
Joanna Connors, The Plain Dealer. Cleveland

'Director Phillip Noyce…returned home to make the sort of raw, angry drama that elevated Australian filmmaking in the 80's.'
