About movie

_Mission Title: The ultimate tutoring project
_Objective: Upgrade Korean comedies

Watch how a tutor and her hopeless student revolutionize the history of Korean comedy!

As a kid, you had to be tutored. In college, it was your turn to tutor. When you thought you were finally free, you found yourself struggling to have your kids tutored. How many in the nation of Korea has escaped the educational institution of tutoring?

It is firmly placed in the everyday lives of Koreans, and in one way or another all suffer from it. " My Tutor Friend " is a witty comedy about two young and lovable characters struggling to survive the institution of tutoring.

" My Tutor Friend " is another film based on a series of funny stories that first became popular on the Internet. The blockbuster " My Sassy Girl " was a hugely successful example of a similar attempt. Director KIM Kyung-hyung, who began as a scriptwriter, wrote the immaculate screenplay for this movie based on true episodes he found online. Through rigorous efforts, the casting for this ultimate comedy was complete with all the cast landing the role of their primary choice.

Following the success of " My Sassy Girl " both on the Internet and the silver screen, " My Tutor Friend " forecasts another major revolution in Korea's comedy genre by dealing with an issue that all viewers from those in their teens to their thirties can relate to.

Synopsis

The Lessons Begin!

Su-wan (played by KIM Ha-nuel) is a sophomore in college, and she works part-time as a tutor to cover her tuition since her father lost his job and started a small chicken eatery. Tutoring is a tough job, especially since basket cases are more curious about what's underneath her skirt (The mirror is the most commonly employed device in satisfying this curiosity.) than what's in the books. Again for the zillionth time, she couldn't hack it. It's been only 7 days since she started teaching her new student, and already she's been sacked. "No tutoring, no tuition," declares her mother to make sure she understands she has no choice. So Su-wan is back on the market, and meets her next challenge -- the impossible, the unconquerable and the unreformable Ji-hoon (played by KWON Sang-woo).

He's the eldest son of a wealthy upstart. At school, he's a well-known fighter and the king of troublemakers. And what's more, he's repeating his senior year for the third time. Ji-hoon, who boasts such an impressive school record, becomes a very unwilling student of Su-wan, who ' s the same age but in college. She is flabbergasted by his careless manners and speech, and his incessant smoking during the lesson. Extremely tempted to quit, Su-wan is determined not to lose this job since she doesn ' t want to disappoint her Mom. Yes, she'll bring him down on his knees and under her control, so as it may seem as she tries to convince herself, but Ji-hoon tramples on her courage with his bluntness:

" Hey babe, just sit over there for two hours and then leave. I'll make sure you get paid. "

" Oh … sure, why not … "

That's how their lessons began. And from then on, things started happening one after another.

Character

1.

The tutor - Su-wan - awkward, not so bright, and totally unprepared

A college student majoring in English Education. (Her pronunciation of the English language is very … uh, well … Korean.)

Her family runs a small fried chicken eatery, which is where, she claims, she got her nickname 'Country Chick' from. (But in truth it's her unsophisticated looks that got her the name.)

Her parents are not so well off, and are incapable of financially supporting her education (which is why she needs to stay in the tutoring business.)

She lacks intelligence, sophistication, attractiveness, and sadly … breasts! What she does have aplenty is an unhealthy dose of an inferiority complex.

And the master troublemaker cum eternal high school senior has just pushed this poor girl over the tip of her patience.

" Romance " was only a beginning …

Kim Ha-nuel -- at the climax of her metamorphosis

She began as the symbol of tender femininity, and then surprised the TV audience as a teacher who dares to fall in love with her student. Now in this film, KIM Ha-nuel plays the hot-blooded college sophomore who bravely takes on the challenge to tutor the untutorable.

The little red ridinghood on a red scooter, KIM Ha-nuel delivers fried chicken in the neighborhood. This courageous girl will not bow to the forces of evil no matter what … even if she's surrounded by a band of delinquent girls … even if that courage only earns her a bloody punch on the nose. This is not the typical KIM Ha-nuel you've seen on TV. The actress herself was delighted with the script, which convinced her that " My Tutor Friend " was HER movie.

Director KIM Kyung-hyung describes Su-wan as a character similar to the orphan girl Honey in "Run Honey, Run," a popular Korean comic book and the animation series of the same title. About KIM Ha-nuel, she says: "If the TV miniseries " Romance " lent a glimpse into Ha-nuel's hidden vivacity, then this film will show it all."

Filmography

Character

2.

The student - Ji-hoon - the typical high school troublemaker

He's still in high school, and in his third year as a senior. (Don't ask why. It hurts.)

His family is incredibly rich. He is the king, the master, the lord of his school. (Don't run after him. He's got loads of them girls behind his trail.)

His Dad is furious. If he doesn't take extra lessons, the credit cards will be terminated. (Honestly, it's a real dirty trick on Dad's part, but for now he has to play the good student.)

He's got it all -- a killer body, sexy smile, powerful fist, and a horde of female fans.

His incompetent tutor friend is proving to be one hell of a problem in his life.

KWON Sang-woo -- A fearless stallion galloping up the road to stardom with his first leading role on the silver screen

In his black leather jacket and riding on his BMW K1200RS is Kwon Sang-woo, or the perfect incarnation of Ji-hoon. He became an idol with his appearance in the TV series " Dating " , and have starred in movies " Volcano High " and " Make it Big " .

He is marvelous both as an action and comic figure, and what's more, he's got that unimpeachable charisma and the streak of a lone rebel that makes him the new generation's star of stars.

His naughty but irresistibly appealing performance overwhelms the movie screen.

Filmography

The other cast

- the forces of good and evil …

The forever young raid the silver screen with their flair for comedy!

1. KIM Jah-oak: Su-wan's Mom. She was the ex-leader of a naughty female quintet in her schooldays. Now she runs a fried chicken restaurant with her husband.

She was not the average schoolgirl. In the good old days, she was the charismatic leader of a band of five improperly behaving girls. What does she do now? She fries chicken. And since her husband got laid off during Korea ' s foreign exchange crisis, she's used her knife for a purpose other than chopping off chicken heads -- threatening Su-wan to take tutoring jobs or die.

Debuted in 1970 on MBC, Kim Jah-oak captured the 1970's TV viewers with her appearance in ' The Queen of Tears. ' Twenty years later she tried her hands at the comic genre as well as a singing career and found extreme success. She made a big hit of her intentionally silly song 'A Princess is Lonely' and started a princess syndrome that gripped the audience with uncontrollable laughter. It's been a long time since she last did a movie, and yet she is fabulous as Su-wan's energetic and aggressive mother, who threatens her daughter to tutor no matter what.

2. BAEK Il-sub: Ji-hoon's father. He firmly believes that extra lessons can strengthen the nation's competitiveness, and that one needs to be strong in educating his child.

He's an upstart who has shot up to the top in both political and economic spheres. He has a dark past behind him as a prominent figure in a ring of organized crimes; which is why he is so strongly determined to bring up his son with proper education.

Since his debut in 1965 on KBS, BAEK has been loved by all for his kind, next-door neighbor image. His more comical appearances began in the 1990s. In 2002, he made a long-awaited comeback to the movies in " No Blood, No Tears " . In " My Tutor Friend " , he plays the one figure that his incorrigible son fears, and he's extremely funny at it.

The next-generation stars make their first screen appearance with a comic performance!

3. KIM Ji-woo: playing Ho-kyung, a sucker for luxury goods.

"How come they don't make razors at Chanel?"

Ho-kyung, the foxiest and the most extravagant girl in town, has her eyes on Ji-hoon.

Her hottest passion used to be shopping, but now it is all about Ji-hoon …

"That creature fresh off the boat is his new tutor?" says she in astonishment.

KIM Ji-woo is a new face who made her TV debut in 2001. She's also a student of Broadcasting and Media Arts at Dongduk Women's University. Boasting a truly diverse musical talent, Ji-woo can play the cello, flute and some traditional Korean instruments. " My Tutor Friend " is her first movie. She has won over all the staff on the sets as a daring and hard-working rookie. The character Ho-kyung is a high school student whose primary occupation is dressing up and going clubbing. She faces an unexpected competition in the unattractive college student Su-wan over her love Ji-hoon.

4. GONG Yoo: playing Jong-su, the ex-lord of the school.

"Love, honor and my own turf … I lost it all!"

He lost his throne to Ji-hoon, who returned to school for another year.

In an attempt to regain his crown Jong-su tries it all: staging a coup with juvenile delinquents in the vicinity, reporting to the police … you name it.

He debuted on the cable channel M-NET as a VJ. After a number of commercial films and appearances on TV, GONG finally debuts on screen with " My Tutor Friend " . He appeals to his fans with his cute face, tall build, and comical acting. He gave this film all that he's got. The result -- superb action and comedy mixed in one. His role as Jong-su in the movie is diabolically motivated by the desire for revenge against Ji-hoon and a crush on Ho-kyung.

Director

" This film is funny and not very serious, but I tried to portray the figures realistically. I avoided exaggerating the characters and focused on making them appear natural. I hope that my work will help viewers take a look at the world from a more innocent perspective. "

- excerpt from an interview with KIM Kyung-hyung

The first movie of a well-prepared director - KIM Kyung-hyung

(presented in the Busan Asian Short Film Festival in 2000 / invited to Sapporo Film Festival in 2001)

It was in his freshman year in college that he found himself watching and re-watching the movie " The Godfather " dozens of times. Since then he has bred a dream to become a director. Even after he found employment in a broadcasting company his heart longed for filmmaking, until he finally quit a promising job to pursue his one real dream. His first major involvement in filmmaking was as assistant director in <Let ' s Look at the Sky Sometimes>. Meanwhile, he also worked on a couple of TV series scripts.

His film debut opportunity came while he was simultaneously working as a freelancer and touring productions companies with his own screenplays. He was asked to make a movie based on a series of short episodes titled <Su-wanee- " My Tutor Friend " >, which gained popularity among Netizens. At first, it seemed a tall task to him because the series was not a complete story but a set of independent episodes. In addition, he was uncomfortable with the fact that the genre was a comedy targeting the young audience sensitive to new trends. But once he started working on the plot and creating the characters he realized it was just the kind of work he had been waiting to do. The outcome of this ultimate comic project will soon be up for viewers' criticism in the theaters.

Production note

1.

The prelude to filming

An unusual title and screenplay … . smelling like a blockbuster …

The origin of this movie was the Internet episode series <Su-wanee- " My Tutor Friend " >. In June 2000, CHOI Su-wan, a real-life English Literature major, posted on the Internet twenty episodes about her experience in tutoring. Each episode was viewed by 15,000 Netizens on average. The eye-catching series was then featured in www.puha.co.kr, a website specializing in comic episodes, and has since been viewed on average 30,000 times per episode.

The popularity caught on in printed medium as a comic series in the monthly Issue under the title " He and I " by SHIM Hye-jin. This was then published in one volume in 2001 by Daewon C.I., and in the same year its screenplay version was born.

The legend of a perfect cast

One of the biggest burdens on today's filmmakers is casting. Securing a star cast is a sheer battle indeed. But the launch of " My Tutor Friend " was easier than people had anticipated as a great cast was found and fixed without much trouble.

In fact, all the first choice actors that the staff had in mind eagerly accepted the offer. This included the lead roles KIM Ha-nuel and KWON Sang-woo, as well as KIM Jah-oak, Su-wan's knife wielding mother, and BAEK Il-sub as Ji-hoon's father.

Production note

2.

The filming

Nose-bleeding, fried chicken delivering and wild dancing? " Come on! I can do it. "

A surprise dance performance by KIM Ha-nuel starts a party on campus!

Everyone thought she was the quiet pretty girl with an angelic innocence. But here she comes shattering that picturesque image as she nosebleeds, delivers fried chicken, and desperately tries to dance.

The dance scene was shot on the campus of Kyunghee University, where a crowd of fans of KWON Sang-woo and KIM Ha-nuel joined some 100 professional extras. It was evident that the star actress was embarrassed at first, but as the music played on she completely lost herself. In no time, the whole campus was partying.

It is said that her revealing outfit and excellently horrible dancing entranced the staff, the extras and the crowd of spectators all through the night.

NO stuntmen! KWON Sang-woo proves himself an expert on wire action but a novice on smoking? And you all thought he was the typical tough guy …

From his film debut " Volcano High " and " Deus Machina (God of Machine) " , which he is currently filming, KWON has done a wide range of action scenes from the very beginning of his acting career. Especially, his excellent high wire action had stuntmen packing up to go home.

But there was one thing he could not do: smoking. Ji-hoon in the movie is a chain smoker, who does not part with his cigarette during his after-school lessons. To play this character, Kwon Sang-woo learned the art of smoking from director Kim Kyung-hyung. For this beginner smoker, the prop team had to supply the special low-nicotine cigarettes.

Behind the Scenes

-After the filming

Is this a true study? What are they doing now?

The real-life model for the character Ji-hoon was at the time a 21-year-old high school senior. Thanks to his luck or Su-wan's tutoring, he did better on his SATs than had been anticipated and successfully made it to college. He is currently enrolled in a language program in UK. CHOI Su-wan, the author of the original episodes, says that her former student was nearly computer illiterate and that he was probably unaware of the episodes she posted on the Internet as well as the fact that they are made into a film.

CHOI has earned her undergraduate degree and is now in a graduate program majoring in Korean Literature. Like other movie lovers, she is dying to see the movie version of her own creation.

The official website of " My Tutor Friend " is on fire!

At the very launch of an online event, more than 3,000 people rushed to the film's official website.

More than 10,000 memos were posted on the bulletin board within 10 days of the website launch. The official website of " My Tutor Friend " is gaining an unprecedented popularity as a website for a domestic Korean film. The unusual subject of the movie and the popularity of the two young stars Kim Ha-nul and KWON Sang-woo seem to have drawn the attention of young Internet users.

Another cause for this popularity may be the website's original ideas and designs. Its creator is SUL Eun-ah, who has already earned the grand prix in the 1st Internet Film Marketing Award for her website for the movie, " My Sassy Girl " . The marketing objective is to carry the popularity of the website straight to the theaters.
