Introduction
Director KWAK Jae-yong of MY SASSY GIRL is back with a new love story that overcomes time and space
Director KWAK Jae-yong of the great summer box office hit of year 2001 MY SASSY GIRL has returned with his new film THE CLASSIC. When chance turns to fate, a destined love story is unraveled by Korea's new generation stars SON Ye-jin, CHO Seung-woo, and CHO In-sung. The film goes back and forth between the 1960s and the present to talk about two romances that are decades apart but somehow connected. The heroin is played by SON Ye-jin, who co-starred in acclaimed films CHIHWASEON and LOVERS' CONCERTO, has secured herself a place in the Korean film scene. One of the male leads is CHO In-sung, who with zealous support from female fans is now trying to expand his horizon from the TV into the screen. The other is CHO Seung-woo, who is recognized for his excellent performances in a number of films. From CHUNHYANG to WHO ARE YOU?, and to H, he has demonstrated his capacity to embody a wider range of characters. The film's director is KWAK Jae-yong, who established himself as the top film-hit maker with his MY SASSY GIRL attracting 4.7 million filmgoers to the theaters. He reserves no praise for the three leading actors whom he believes have all the fundamentals of a film star, including a solid base in acting. KWAK Jae-yong is admired for his ability to draw out the detailed emotions in his actors, and this special ability has helped our young stars in THE CLASSIC to express their unique appeals in a harmonizing way.
Master IM Kwon-taek's discovery, SON Ye-jin, and CHO Seung-woo, reborn in the delicate hands of Director KWAK Jae-yong
Internationally-acclaimed director IM Kwon-taek discovered the young star potential in SON Ye-jin, and gave her the opportunity to make her film dˆmbut in CHIHWASEON, a Cannes Film Festival Best Director Awardee. She has since been a great addition to the Korean cinema, which is suffering a lack of good actresses. Chosen in an open audition for the lead role in CHUNHYANG was CHO Seung-woo, whose experience on the stage pushed him straight to the main role of LEE Mong-ryong, a magnificent screen dˆmbut by any standards, also a Cannes competition contender. He has since attracted the attention of film lovers, who expect to see more of his great acting in the year 2003. The two young stars meet as lovers in KWAK Jae-yong's THE CLASSIC. Although SON and CHO have both begun their film career with much applauded masterpieces, they confess that they had not known what acting was until the filming of THE CLASSIC. Notable is SON Ye-jin's performance in the dual roles of Joo-hee and Ji-hae, who are mother and daughter. CHO Seung-woo, on the other hand, is excellent in depicting the love growing inside Joon-ha as he writes to Joo-hee in Tae-su's name. KWAK Jae-yong who has proven his gift of matchmaking in MY SASSY GIRL has made another stellar match that will surely delight film lovers in the year 2003.
4.7 million viewers welcomed his comeback in 2001. KWAK Jae-yong now takes them on a trip into a memorable past.
Director KWAK Jae-yong established himself as a box-office hit maker in 2001 with MY SASSY GIRL, attracting more than 4.7 million viewers to the theater. After four years of laborious scriptwriting he has come back with THE CLASSIC. The film is basically romantic with a mix of 70s' nostalgia and modern wit and sensitivity. If his MY SASSY GIRL made us laugh all throughout until a very touching end, the viewers of THE CLASSIC will experience themselves being purified by the story of simple and innocent love. The film is about the happiness of being together and the sad disappointment of unfulfilled first love. The first love comes as if by chance, but as in the words of Joo-hee: "chance is a gift for those who try." And so the unconsummated love that was cherished in Joo-hee's diary revisits her daughter Ji-hae like magic. Then chance and destiny build a karmic bridge that connects the present with the past, creating a memorable love.
THE CLASSIC will touch viewers of all generations. It reminds us of a true love that comes only once in a lifetime, and how sadly we had to let go of it, but forever cherished it in our hearts. THE CLASSIC has that universal appeal we call "Love."

Director/Screenwriter KWAK Jae-yong
KWAK Jae-yong made his directing debut in 1989 with A SKETCH OF A RAINY DAY. With its beautiful photography and music it started a boom in films for the young audience. And the OST released in its title was exceptionally popular. His other films include AUTUMN TRIP, a sequel to his first film, and the enormously successful MY SASSY GIRL, starring JEON Ji-hyun and CHA Tae-hyun, which attracted more than 4.7 million viewers nationwide. Director KWAK is excellent in depicting love, and believes that the audience likes to see what he likes to see. It is his philosophy that films should be made for the viewer and from the viewer's perspective. In THE CLASSIC, which he wrote and directed, KWAK Jae-yong says he wanted to show that the world is a good place for people who make efforts to realize true love. THE CLASSIC embodies the romantic imagination of a director whose youthful innocence has not been worn by time.

Production Note
The past and the present connected, but different periods in time ...
THE CLASSIC is about two love stories that are divided by a gap of three decades, one in the 1960~70s' period and the other in the present time. Other films set in the past, such as BET ON MY DISCO and WET DREAMS have employed the kitsch code and are too childish, but THE CLASSIC distinguishes itself from these films with a sophisticated and composed depiction of both past and present. It aimed thus to help the audience experience nostalgia and to deliver to them the visual images of a beautiful and innocent love.
One of the central themes was the communication between the past and present, which is embodied in this film as the karmic connection between the love of Joo-hee and Joon-ha and that of Ji-hae and Sang-min. The rooms of Joo-hee in the 1960s and her daughter Ji-hae at present share a similar window frame, symbolizing the link between the love in the past and the present. And the small bridge over the brook where Joo-hee and Joon-ha first fall in love is precisely where Ji-hae and Sang-min confirm their feelings for each other.
Also, the necklace is another symbol that shows the destiny of love connecting the two different time periods. While the past and present is linked by these symbolic articles, the two time periods are visually differentiated in tone by camera work using the tobacco filter. Through countless testing of various filters to achieve the right color, the staff decided on using the tobacco filter as the ideal alternative to the traditional black and white contrast for distinguishing the past from the present. The result was an old-fashioned but elegant coloring of yellow and magenta that takes the audience pleasantly into the old times.
Cryptic hints of a love unconsummated
The buildings and the props that appear in THE CLASSIC foreshadow events in the film. When Joo-hee first meets Joon-ha, she asks him to escort her to the haunted house. The haunted house is deserted and forlorn, symbolizing hopelessness. The desolate setting where Joo-hee and Joon-ha fall in love hints that their love cannot bear fruit. Outside the film theater on the street where Joo-hee and Joon-ha meet are posters of Cleopatra and Roman Holiday, film classics about unconsummated love. The lamppost that stood for Joon-ha and Joo-hee's promise for a secret rendezvous remains unlit when their love is obstructed by others. Another important symbol is Joo-hee's home, which is a beautifully constructed but somberly gray building. It stands flanked by a retaining wall, which symbolizes Joo-hee's confinement in her father's influence. THE CLASSIC uses props, locations and situations that cryptically embody the sadness of a love that could not be.
THE CLASSIC - A beautiful piece about first love played by great actors
One of the greatest tasks in filming THE CLASSIC was the casting. Especially difficult was finding the actress who could play both Joo-hee and Ji-hae in time periods thirty years apart. KWAK Jae-yong's final choice was SON Ye-jin, who he felt had just the look to embody the two female characters in the screenplay. He was right. The roles of Joo-hee and Ji-hae fit her like a tailored suit. She was no longer So-woon in the film CHIHWASEON, the woman Jang Seung-ub cherished in his heart for life, nor was she the pretty face Soo-in in LOVERS' CONCERTO. Then there is CHO In-sung, who became a TV idol with his appearance in the sitcom "New Non-stop" and the big hit mini series "Piano". It is not hard to see in this actor the character Sang-min, who is both an authoritative senior in the drama club who frequently scolds younger actors, and a timid young man, who cannot find the courage to confess his love for Ji-hae. Finally, there is CHO Seung-woo, who made a magnificent film debut with IM Kwon-taek's CHUNHYANG. He has already made a deep impression on film lovers with WANEE AND JUNAH and WHO ARE YOU? as an actor more seasoned than his age. In this film, he is perfect as Joon-ha, who suffers from loving the girl who is engaged to his friend.
Synopsis
Chance vs Fate
Ji-hae and Soo-kyoung are friends attending the same university and both have a crush on Sang-min who is in their drama club. The more clamorous and outgoing of the two, Soo-kyoung, asks Ji-hae to do her a favor - write a love letter to Sang-min. Ji-hae pours out her own feelings for him on paper, but sadly in her friend's name. Touched by the letter, Sang-min is attracted to Soo-kyoung, and Ji-hae, feeling uncomfortable and even guilty, tries to avoid him. And yet by coincidence or by fate she keeps running into him.
A love that seems like a long forgotten memory
Ji-hae has lived alone with her mom since her childhood, when her dad unexpectedly passed away. Her mom is now on a trip abroad, and to wile away her solitude she starts cleaning the attic. There Ji-hae finds a secret box, in which her mom kept the memorabilia of her first love story of some decades past.
Happy coincidence, the romantic past
Summer in 1968¡K
Joon-ha is visiting his uncle's home in the countryside during his summer vacation. There he meets Joo-hee and falls in love at first sight. One day, the lovely Joo-hee secretly asks Joon-ha to escort her to a haunted house in the village. Happy and excited to be at her service, Joon-ha meets her at their promised spot. But in an unexpected storm, the two lose their boat and barely manage to return home at a very late hour. Joo-hee gets into big trouble for this incident and is sent back to Seoul. Having parted with Joo-hee without a word of farewell, Joon-ha spends the rest of the summer heavy-hearted.
With summer vacation being over Joon-ha also returns to Seoul. At school, his classmate Tae-su asks him to write a love letter to send to a girl. And who would it be but Joo-hee, Joon-ha's dream girl. Unable to confess his own summer love story, Joon-ha reluctantly complies with his friend's request.
A love that started long long time ago
Ji-hae discovers that the story of her mom's first love is a striking parallel to her own. The coincidence disturbs her as her feelings for Sang-min grow. Although she's determined to forget Sang-min since he is now her friend's love, a trial of events tests her true feelings.

Her successful debut was followed by LOVERS' CONCERTO in which she appeared with CHA Tae-hyun and Lee Eun-ju. Estimated as one of the most promising young actresses, SON has both classical beauty and modern vivacity. In THE CLASSIC, she plays dual roles as Joo-hee and her daughter Ji-hae and their love for the two very attractive young men, CHO In-sung and CHO Seung-woo.
Chihwaseon (2002) / Lovers' Concerto (2002) / The Classic (2003)
Joon-ha
"I must be a real fool ... I'll go crazy if I don't get to see you for a single day.
I can't do anything but love you."
His friend Tae-su showed him a picture of his fiancˆme. And there she was smiling, his first love Joo-hee. He had met her during the summer he went to spend the vacation at his uncle's. Though it was only for a brief moment, he remembers everything about her as if she was standing next to him. That Joo-hee should be engaged to his close friend, Joon-ha is tormented by his growing love for Joo-hee as his relationship continues with an unwitting Tae-su in the triangle. To confess or not to confess to his friend about their love is Joon-ha's most burdensome dilemma.
CHO Seung-woo
CHO Seung-woo made his first screen appearance in IM Kwon-taek's CHUNHYANG as the hero Lee Mong-ryong. Declining the countless offers from TV broadcasting companies and film producers that followed, he CHOse to act on the stage. After a series of performances in stage productions, such as "Blood Brothers", "Line 1" and "The Last Empress", CHO Seung-woo returned to the screen with "Wannee and Junah" as the first love and half brother of female lead played by Kim Hee-sun. His next film WHO ARE YOU? earned him the recognition as the greatest actor in his generation. His unique appeal is simply radiant in THE CLASSIC.

Sang-min
"She is... It's weird... There were too many coincidences to say that they happened by chance.
I thought at first it was because I liked her that I kept connecting things... but maybe there's something more."
There was a girl who caught Sang-min's eyes as soon he came back to sCHOol. Her name is Ji-hae, but she is always with Soo-kyoung. And because Soo-kyoung is so strong and expressive in declaring her love for him, he is unable to confess his true feelings for Ji-hae. But he is not always so unsure of himself. In the drama club, he is a charismatic figure who does not overlook a single mistake made by others. When Ji-hae is not around that is. He finds himself running into her and begins to doubt whether this coincidence was not fate.
CHO In-sung
CHO In-sung first became visible in 1998 modeling for the fashion brand GioGia. Since then, he has risen to major stardom in no time at all. His shy smile and kind eyes make him simply adorable to female fans. He is one of the few actors who project a mixed image of the tender, faithful lover and the wild rebel. Recently he made an impressive appearance in "Madeleine" in the lead role of an intelligent college student.
