Story
At a typical "Band 5" boys' school in Japan, the leader of the pack is decided by who claps the most times while perched on the dangerous side of a rooftop fence. The cool Kujo set the new record and is crowned the boss, but he refuses to enforce mob rules.
High school life is as much a paradise as it is hell. And face with the unforeseen future after graduation, the clapping game serves as an outlet for them to relief their anxiety and restless energy.
Kujo, the object of Aoki's idolization and jealousy, no longer interested in being the boss, hardly pays much attention to Aoki. Feeling abandoned and left out, Aoki decided to take on the challenge to break Kujo's record.
Production notes
Japanese filmmakers are in the midst of a deep and painful moment of societal self-analysis and truly exceptional cinema is being created in the process. One can literally feel their agony as they explore the failure and lies that have contributed to the nation's current state of crisis.
Seethingly angry, brutal and breathtaking, BLUE SPRING would be a close relative to kids-gone-wrong films like Lindsay Anderson's IF and Harold Becker's TAPS if it actually promoted any spirit of friendship or togetherness amongst its youthful subjects. Instead their sole moment of bonding comes in a particularly bloodcurdling form of "chicken".
A film of this kind trades on authenticity and tone, and BLUE SPRING has plenty of both.
Matsumoto Taiyou ªQ¥»¤j¬v
He started drawing manga at the university. He made his debut in Morning, where he decided to apply his work as he was a fan of Tsuchida Seiki. Matsumoto is the cousin of Inoue Santa, who's also a mangaka. He admits being influenced by European artists like Moebius and Enki Bilal.
