Academy Award-nominee Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking) and a stellar ensemble cast including Sarah Polley (The Sweet Hereafter), Elizabeth Hurley (EDtv), Catherine McCormack (Dangerous Beauty), and Josh Lucas (Harvest) begin filming today for the long-awaited adaptation of Anita Shreve's on 1997 best-selling novel, The Weight Of Water. A riveting tale of obsession and betrayal that spans two centuries, the film is being directed by Kathryn Bigelow who has enjoyed prior success with such films as Point Break, Strange Days, and near Dark. The script was adapted by Academy Award-nominee Alice Arlen (Silkwood) and Christopher Kyle.

Inspired by the real-life events of the brutal double-murder of two Scandinavian immigrants on a small island off the New Hampshire coast in 1873, The Weight of water chronicles the parallel lives of two women separated by a hundred years. Pjhotojournalist Jean Nichols (McCormack) and her husband, Pulitzer prize-winning poet Thomas Janes (Penn) set sail for the island in order for Jean to photograph the site of the murders for a photo essay about the legendary crime. Along for the weekend trip are Thomas' brother (Lucas) and the brother's girlfriend (Hurley). Although a man was hanged for the murders, they have been debated for over a century. Jean becomes consumed with this debate as she reads the journals of the crime's only survivor (Polley). The malign force of hard weather plunges us into the best kind of mystery and almost biblical vividness of the darkness of motives. While the events of the past are replayed, the present finds Jean and Thomas gripped by a crisis of their own - one that mirrors the emotional, uncontrolled passions from a century ago.

The prestigious cast also includes Katrin Cartlidge (Breaking the Waves), Ciaran hinds (Oscar and Lucinda), Ulrich Thomsen (The Celebration), Vinessa Shaw (Eyes Wide Shut) and Anders Berthelsen (Mifune). Adrian biddle (The Butcher Boy, Thelma and Louise, Aliens) serves as the director of photography and the production is designed by Karl Juliusson (Breaking the Waves).

The Weight Of Water is produced by academy Award and Golden Globe-nominee Janet Yant (The Joy Luck Club, People vs. Larry Flynt), Joni Sighvatsson (Arlington Road, Polish Wedding) and Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominee A. Kitman Ho (Born on the Fourth of July, JFK, Ghost in the Darkness).

About The Cast

Sean Penn Thomas

Penn's work has spanned nearly two decades with over 25 films to his credit. His performance in Dead Man Walking garnered critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In 1997, he was honored with the Best Actor Award in Cannes for his portrayal in She's So Lovely.

Last year, he was seen starring in Anthony Drazen's Hurlyburly, a film adaptation of David Rabe's play for which he received the Best Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival, and The Thin Red Line, directed by Terrence Malick. He will soon be seen in Phillip Haa's Up at the Villa and Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown. Other film credits include Hugo Pool, U Turn, The Game, Loved, Carlito's Way and State of Grace, among many others.

In recent years, Penn's involvement has expanced to include writing and directing (The Indian Runner, The Crossing Guard and the upcoming Autumn of the Patriarch) and he has since formed Clyde is Hungry Films, a production company based in San Francisco.

Caterine McCormack Jean

Is a graduate of the esteemed Oxford School of Drama. She made her screen debut in the lead role of director Anna Campion's Loaded. She was then catapulted into international recognition as the doomed love of Mel Gibson in his multiple Academy Award-winning film Braveheart.

McCormack most recently starred in Eva Quaid's The Debtors and David Kane's This Year's Love. Other feature film credits include Nils Gaup's North Star; Marshall Herskovitz's Dangerous Beauty; David Leland's Land Girls; and Pat O'Conor's film adaptation of Dancing at Lughnasa, opposite Merly Streep. She will also be seen in E. Elias Merhige's upcoming film, Burned to Light.

McCormck's television work included Philip Saville's Deacon Brodie, opposite Billy Connolly, and recently starred in the UK miniseries, How To Do Love in the 21st Century.

Elizabeth Hurley Adaline

Hurley most recently appeared in a cameo role in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Hurley starred with Mike Myers in the original hit comedy Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Other film credits include Ro Howard's Edtv; My Favorite Martian; Permanent Midnight; Passenger 57; and Dangerous Ground. For television in the U.S, Hurley appeared as <<Delialah>> in TNT's Samsom & Delialah. Erreur! Signet non defini.

Hurley has appeared in numerous European feature films including Aria; EI Largo Invierno; The Skiper; Beyond Bedlam; Mad Dogs and Englishmen; and Remando al Viento, which was her first starring role opposite Hugh Grant. On Rumpole of the Bailey; Inspector Morses; and Christabel, among others.

Concurrent with her acting career, Hurley and Hugh Grant set up Simian Films as part of their first look deal with castle Rock Entertainment. Hurley recently produced the romantic comedy, Mickey Blue Eyes. She also developed and produced their first film Extreme measure. In addition to acting and producing, Hurley represents Estee Launder in its worldwide advertising campaigns.

Josh Lucas Rich

Lucas most recently appeared in Stuart Burkin's feature film Harvest, starring opposite James Van der Beek. Other film credits include Jule Gilfillan's Restless; Ferdinand Fairfax's True Blue; Frank Marshall's Alive; and Darryl J. Roodt's Fatherhood. Lucas' upcoming film projects include Mary Harron's American Psycho, starring Christian Bale and Reese Witherspoon; Fred Garcon's The Dancer; and the independent film You Can Count On Me, opposite Laura Linney.

For television, Lucas has appeared n Cracker (ABC), Feds (CBS), the NBC movie-of-the week A Matter of Justice and Class of '61, which was produced by Steven Spielberg.

Sarah Polley Maren

Polley gained critical acclaim in Atom egoyan's Oscar-nominated The Sweet Hereafter, winner of the 1997 Grand Prix at Cannes. Her portrayal of the pivotal character <<Nicole,>> won Polley a Best supporting Actress Award from the Boston Society of Film Critics and the Chicago Film Critics, as wel as a Genie Award Nomination.

Polley's most recent projects include existenZ; Life Before This; Guinevere and Go, both of which premiere at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Her additional film credits include Last Night, The Hanging Garden, The Planet of Junior rown, Joe's So Mean to Josephine and Egoyan's Exotica.

On the small screen, Polley has starred in the television movies White Lies (Gemini Award nomination for Best Actress).

Polley's career began at a mere four years old when she appeared in Philip Borsos' holiday fantasy One Magic Christmas. At eight, she played the title role in the PBS series Ramona. Additionally, at the age of nine she starred in the Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

Polley also appeared as the title role in the Stratford Festival Theatre's production of Alice Through the looking Glass. She recently became the youngest person ever to be honored with a Women In Film & Television-Toronto Crystal Award for Lifetime Achievement, and was member of the Blue Ribbon Jury for the 1999 Hot Docs Film Festival.

About Director --- Kathryn Bigelow

Bigelow has established herself as one of Hollywood's most innovative filmmakers. Her directorial credits include the sci-fi thriller, Strange Days, for which she won the 1996 Saturn Award for Best Director from the Academy of Science Fiction horror & Fantasy the action film Point Break; Blue Steel, which she also co-wrote; and the stirring cult classic near Dark.

Bigelow's television credits include the mini-series Wild Palms, and two episodes of the television series, homicide: Life on the Street.

Born and raised in Northern California, Bigelow came to filmmaking via painting. She attended the San Francisco Art Institute where she received a scholarship for the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Program in New York. She then joined Art and Language, a British-based group of conceptual artists dedicated to the exploration of theoretical, literary and political topics through writing and painting. Increasingly, the collective utilized film in their programming, shifting Bigelow's primary focus towards cinema. She also worked iwht video and performance artists Vito Acconci, Richard Serra and Lawrence Weiner.

During the late seventies, Bigelow began her association with the New York underground film scene. In 1978, she directed her first film, Set Up, a twenty-minute short which was invited to tour several European film festivals. Soon thereafter, she received a scholarship to attend Columbia University's Graduate School of Film where she studied with Milos Forman.
