結 婚 証 是 一 本 最 最 普 通 ， 又 最 最 重 要 的 証 件 ， 普 通 在 于 每 對 夫 妻 都 有 ， 重 要 就 在 于 它 是 組 成 家 庭 的 法 律 憑 証 ， 一 如 商 品 的 發 票 ， 是 擁 有 者 的 憑 據 。

『 下 崗 』 工 程 師 謝 雨 婷 ， 兩 年 來 過 著 安 穩 的 家 庭 主 婦 生 活 ； 一 天 為 了 要 登 記 領 取 『 模 範 夫 妻 』 禮 品 ， 方 才 發 現 自 已 的 結 婚 証 已 經 遺 失 。 『 沒 有 結 婚 証 就 是 非 法 同 居 ， 不 受 法 律 保 護 ， 這 家 說 散 就 散 … … 』 好 事 者 的 這 麼 一 句 玩 笑 話 ， 令 雨 婷 誓 死 要 尋 回 結 婚 証 。

雨 婷 把 家 翻 查 得 亂 七 八 糟 ， 徹 底 折 騰 了 丈 夫 顧 明 與 女 兒 小 文 ， 越 是 找 不 著 ， 越 發 找 丈 夫 的 碴 子 ； 當 精 神 科 醫 生 的 顧 明 既 想 逃 避 妻 子 的 無 理 責 難 ， 又 想 親 近 善 解 人 意 的 年 輕 女 助 手 ， 不 其 然 尋 找 各 樣 夜 歸 的 借 口 ； 年 界 十 四 、 對 男 女 關 係 極 度 好 奇 的 小 文 ， 對 父 親 的 心 思 卻 是 一 目 了 然 ， 一 心 為 大 好 家 庭 力 挽 狂 瀾 ， 花 錢 做 了 一 個 假 的 結 婚 証 來 瞞 天 過 海 ， 誰 知 結 婚 証 在 文 革 以 後 已 經 歷 了 好 幾 十 個 修 訂 ， 就 連 証 件 上 的 毛 主 席 肖 像 亦 蕩 然 無 存 ； 雨 婷 拿 著 面 目 全 非 的 結 婚 証 大 發 雷 霆 ， 認 定 丈 夫 蓄 意 欺 騙 ， 圖 謀 拋 妻 棄 兒 … …

事 情 急 轉 直 下 ， 二 人 結 果 申 請 離 婚 ； 但 依 據 中 國 的 律 法 ， 離 婚 還 得 先 有 結 婚 証 ， 雨 婷 惘 惘 然 回 到 當 年 下 鄉 以 及 結 婚 的 地 方 ， 方 才 發 現 從 前 簽 發 結 婚 証 的 人 民 公 社 早 已 瓦 解 ─ ─ 這 個 曾 幾 何 時 發 糧 票 、 派 工 作 、 主 導 人 民 生 活 命 脈 的 偉 大 地 方 ， 跟 毛 主 席 這 樣 的 偉 大 人 物 ， 己 經 蕩 然 無 存 … …

雨 婷 回 到 亮 麗 簇 新 的 城 市 裡 ， 猛 然 想 到 昔 日 好 時 光 不 再 復 尋 ， 取 而 代 之 是 高 速 經 濟 發 展 所 帶 來 的 富 裕 物 質 生 活 … … 有 這 種 想 法 的 豈 止 於 雨 婷 一 人 ？ 被 官 僚 制 度 潛 移 默 化 的 一 群 ， 在 面 對 轉 變 的 時 候 ， 往 往 顯 得 無 法 自 拔 ， 唯 有 不 惜 一 切 地 堅 持 舊 有 思 想 及 信 念 ， 釀 成 幕 幕 荒 謬 絕 倫 、 誤 己 誤 人 的 鬧 劇 。

Synopsis

Marriage certificate is perhaps the most mundane yet also the most important document; indicative of a usual relationship appending a legal obligation, a marriage certificate is very much like a receipt for a merchandize that guarantees its ownership.

Tse has never quite taken her marriage certificate seriously until one day she notices hers is missing. "That's an illegal cohabitation," a bystander teases, "and worse, being unprotected by law, anybody can walk out on you…" Tse is greatly disturbed and becomes obsessed with locating her certificate, turning her household upside down as well as into a battlefield, continuously hassling her psychotherapist husband and her teenage daughter.

The more fed up and apathetic her husband Ku seems, the more insecure and irrational Tse becomes. To worsen the situation, Ku starts to excuse himself from coming home directly after work while being tempted by his young timid female assistant. Being extremely curious and sensitive about the gender issues, Ku's teenage daughter Xiaowen immediately perceives her father's slip of judgment and decides to takes charge. She has the certificate "reissued" by a forger and plants the counterfeit in her household - a seemingly plausible plot if excluding the fact that marriage certificate has gone through several dozens modifications in the past two decades. Tse is completely outraged when she "recovers" "her" certificate on which the portrait of Chairman Mao is now missing. Tse holds her husband responsible for the scam and is further assured of her husband's infidelity…

Tse and Ku ends up filing for a divorce, yet the same bureau that has refused to reissue their certificate before, now refuses to process the divorce without the marriage paper ready at hand. Out of despair, Tse hops on a train to the rural area where she met and married Ku during the Cultural Revolution era. Much to her surprise, the People's Commune has dissolved years ago. This very collective once responsible for allocating jobs and rations, for life and death, as well as for the authorization of her marriage, like Chairman Mao amongst many other great wonders, is no longer visible in the modern daylight…

Good old days are gone, traded off to an ever-growingly flamboyant cityscape and a cozy materialist lifestyle now seem so alienating to Tse. However, Tse is not alone in terms of resisting modernization driven by economic advancement. She can still seek allies from the existing Communist bureaucracy, in which devotees will never divorce their outmoded political dogmas and social values, and at all cost, inflicting unnecessary nuances and tragedies upon their contemporaries, the new generations, and themselves.
