Go-Con
(The Japanese Love Culture)

13th Singapore International Film Festival - One of the 10 Best Selling Films
3rd Annual Bangkok Film Festival
New York Special Screening Day

Director:    Nobuyuki Shintani
Producer:   Tsunku
CAST:   Rina Uchiyama, Ryuta Kawabata, Ryoji Ando

Foreword

Arranged Dating was always part of Japanese culture. Parents will arranged an "appropriate" dating partner for their children when their children reached a maturity age. But lives are getting very busy nowadays for Japanese. They don't even have time to meet their friends, so they wouldn't be bothered with the arranged dating anyway.

We're living in an electronic-communication age, people are communicating through fax, phone, or email conveniently in a few seconds time. However, with these electronic communications, it also distanced the closeness of human relationship. The film "Go-Con" is focusing on this topic and discuss about the post-modern ideology of love and sex.

Go-Con is the new dating game, which was originally invented by the new generation youths. Since these youths can't communicate well on a one-to-one basis, they decided to have a leader who invites different strangers to join. It was usually host in a fine restaurant, with a table of eight, with four guys and four girls. This activity has become very popular that it was eventually picked up by the trend and even by TV game shows. However, behind all these games and chitchatting in go-con, each are attending with a different purpose. Some are looking for things to do during leisure time, some are looking for one-night-stand, and some don't even know what they are looking for.

Storyline

Rina works in a casual restaurant for her tuitions. There're lots of Go-Con players in that place and she hates them. However, she decided to attend the Christmas Go-Con because of Ando. Ando was a fresh guy who has never been in love and he doesn't even know what is love, then he met Rina who's also never been in love before. Tae represents the new generation of Japanese urban female. She gave up her relationship with Ryuta because she decided to further her studies overseas, but they met again in the Christmas Go-Con after three years. Ryuta has always been the Go-Con playboy, but there's a reason for it. Kazuhito always show-off his Olympic gold medal in order to get the attention from the ladies, but one day he met a woman who doesn't care about his medal at all¡K

About the Producer

Tsunku is a famous music producer who is recognized as one of the most powerful music producer in Japan, and he is also very enthusiastic in the film industry. He would like to challenge things that are not his regular work; hence he decided to be the producer of his first film, "Go-Con". He presents the uniqueness of Japanese culture on the screen, which gets a lot of attentions from the public and the press throughout the year.

About Rina

Ms. Rina Uchiyama is one of the most popular teen idols in Japan. She's recognized as the diva of advertising models nowadays. She took part in more than 15 advertisements and 21 TV drama series. Go-Con is her first film. With her outstanding performance in Go-Con, it reassures her supreme position among the new generation of stars.

Rina's comment on the Go-Con game - " Go-Con Dating is so popular in Japan, I always want to try this activity but I have no chance. Never mind, eventually I had a fun from Go-Con when I took part in this film. It was so funny and interesting so that, I realized why Go-Con becomes the typical Japanese teens culture."

Some Considerable Topics

  1. Every character has his/her own distinct identity throughout the film, and each character seems to represent different perspectives of the recent Japan. For example, Athlete Kazuhito always shows off his Olympic Gold medal, which represents the depression that's with Japan's economy now. Japan has been proud and glorious about their development for the past 20 years, but now they're suffering from the economy depression and the crisis of self-confident (that their policies are not always right, and they're not any superior than other nationality). When we look back to Hong Kong, are our citizens having the same feeling? We worked our heads off to buy an over-rated apartment, but after the deflation now it's as meaningless as the gold medal, it's no longer an icon of security. The job market in Hong Kong are not in any better condition, and Hong Kong soon will lose her leading position in China¡K what will be left then?
  2. Go-Con always reflects author's point of view on Popular Culture - it has its negative side as well as the positive side. In a certain aspect, the popular culture in Japan wasn't very healthy because it merely promotes the monetary and materialistic ideologies, which were greatly influenced by their local economy development. The negative sides of popular culture include - 1) Quantity over quality - success greatly depends on how much people will consume; 2) It is heavily focused on monetary status; and 3) Lack of in-depth communication - people know only a general bits of a star, and usually people are not interested to go into depth. Go-Con pretty much fits with all the 3 categories mentioned above: 1) Usually Go-Con are better to play with more people; 2) People who attended Go-Con evaluate Cash and fame more than anything else, and 3) In go-con parties people are not really spiritually communication, it's pretty much a general chitchat gathering. However, the author also re-states in the finale, that Go-Con or Popular culture was only a game and a way to express feelings, its meaning are greatly depended on the encoder (artists) and the perception and understanding of the receivers (audiences).
