PRODUCTION INFORMATION
"Love is a scary thing."
In Enough - a harrowing, high-style thriller directed by Michael Apted and starring Jennifer Lopez - an ordinary woman turns the tables on her predatory husband and enters into battle against him. In a physical and psychological war of nerves and valor, she transforms herself into an unexpected action heroine: a mother turned warrior, willing to go to any extreme to keep her daughter safe.
Lopez stars as Slim, a hard-working woman who thought she met the perfect man in Mitch (Billy Campbell), a charming, wealthy contractor. They start an idyllic life together in the suburbs, but after the birth of their daughter Grace, Slim discovers that Mitch has another side- a controlling and dark alter ego who turns trust, love and domestic tranquility into terror and menace. Terrified for her daughter, Slim tries to escape the marriage, but Mitch relentlessly pursues her. She changes her name, her appearance, her very identity, and goes into hiding, only to be hunted again. No one can help her, not her friends and not even the police. But Slim has had enough of fear and running.
Says producer Irwin Winkler: "Enough is a riveting thriller about a woman who empowers herself in every way and goes after her right to safety with everything she's got - physically, mentally, emotionally. It's a great script and a great role for a strong personality like Jennifer Lopez."
Enough is directed by Michael Apted ("The World is not Enough," "Gorillas in the Mist," "Coal Miner's Daughter," " Enigma") from an original screenplay by Nicholas Kazan (an Oscar nominee for "Reversal of Fortune"), and stars Jennifer Lopez, Billy Campbell, Juliette Lewis, Dan Futterman, Fred Ward, Noah Wyle and Tessa Allen. The producers are four-time Academy Award nominee and Oscar winner Irwin Winkler and his Winkler Films partner Rob Cowan. The executive producer is E. Bennett Walsh and the co-producer is Jeanney Kim.
Enough marks an electrifying change of pace for Jennifer Lopez as she takes on a role that is at once filled with extreme physical action and features a woman's remarkable internal shift from maximum fear to maximum strength. Equally known for her work as an actress and musician, and recently named Female Star of The Year by NATO/Showest, Lopez was intrigued by this non-stop suspense thriller that hinges on the very idea of transformation and finding one's own inner power.
"I loved the script because to me it was a kind of female 'Rocky,' but more real and intense, more based on the kind of events that happen in real life," she says. "My character, Slim, goes from being just a normal girl working as a waitress to marrying Prince Charming. Then she loses it all, everything she believed in, and must fight her way back to take control of her life. I really responded to her courage and her strength."
Writer Nicholas Kazan responded in turn to the casting of Lopez as the heroine whose tenacity as a mother and fearlessness as a threatened woman raises fascinating moral issues in his script. "I've really admired Jennifer's work to date - she was so fantastic in 'Out of Sight' - and I was really intrigued when she was cast for this movie," notes Kazan. "Jennifer brings her inimitable style to the role and gives great animation to the character. Even more important, she really went for it, bringing both power and nuance to Slim's turn-around. She was very in sync with the emotional values of the piece. Jennifer really makes you understand that Slim has no choice."
As she fights to survive, Slim not only must change the very way she views her husband and the world, but also her body. She goes into a fierce physical boot camp so that she'll be ready to confront her menacing husband.
For Lopez, this meant she too, had to train intensively in the martial arts to prepare for the role. "I really enjoyed the training," comments Lopez. "Even though men are usually physically bigger and stronger than women, I learned that through certain techniques a woman really can get the upper hand in a combat situation. I think for Slim, it's a way to realize she can take control of her fear and win."
Lopez was initiated into the potent fighting form of Krav Maga, considered to be one of the world's most effective and deadly martial arts, which was originally developed by the Israeli military in part to give their women soldiers the ability to defend themselves in even the most excruciating hand-to-hand combat.
Lopez received her training in Krav Maga from martial arts expert Wade Allen, who worked closely with 2nd unit director and stunt coordinator Simon Crane. Crane previously trained Angelina Jolie for her physically demanding role in "Tomb Raider." In explaining the philosophy of the system to Lopez, Allen drove home one consistent point: "In Krav Maga there is only one rule: use everything you've got."
But Lopez also discovered something else about Krav Maga -- it's an incredible workout. Combining self-defense tactics with killer cardio intervals, the system is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing new fitness trends in America.
Krav Maga came to the United States in 1981 and has been embraced by law enforcement agencies and martial artists who appreciate its no-nonsense approach. The system uses instinctual moves and the body's natural fight-or-flight reflexes. The exercises simulate real-life conflicts in which adrenaline, fear and fatigue all play a part.
Lopez took to the challenge right away. "She was very keen to do her own stuff and she turned out to be incredibly good," says Crane. "In the end she did about 95% of the stunts you see in the film."
Summarizes Lopez: "Krav Maga is about finding the power within yourself and that's what really transforms Slim."
At the core of this cat-and-mouse thriller, screen writer Kazan created a man who appears from the beginning to be a wonderful, funny, loving fiance- only to turn into a ruthless and clever pursuer when Slim tries to end their marriage. Playing Slim's husband Mitch is Billy Campbell, best known for his role as a much more ideal spouse to Sela Ward on television's popular "Once and Again." Now he makes a chilling departure as a man who can switch from sweet, sensual lover to a portrait of terror and fear in a millisecond.
Campbell relished the opportunity to head into new and unexpected dramatic territory in his acting career. "It's a thrill to do something other than just be nice," he admits. "And to play a bad guy with Jennifer is truly icing on the cake."
But Campbell also found himself getting the willies the further he delved into Mitch's pathologically controlling personality. "Mitch is the kind of guy who feels entitled to whatever he wants, whenever he wants it. He doesn't have a stopping point and that's very frightening to me," says Campbell. "I think he's particularly dangerous because he has this image of being a pretty good guy but that has nothing to do with who he really is beneath all the charm and intelligence on the surface."
Says producer Rob Cowan of Campbell: "The trick to Mitch is that even though he is a very, very bad man, we want the audience to fall for him the same way Jennifer falls in love with him. That's why Billy was perfect, because he's about the nicest, most charming guy you'd ever want to meet. It's such a total surprise to see him suddenly turn on someone - and the contrast makes the character of Mitch that much more menacing."
Helping Slim build up the nerve to battle Mitch is her best friend Ginny, played by award-winning actress Juliette Lewis, who was interested in being part of Slim's battle. For Lewis, the film's one-word title says it all. "When enough's enough, you've had it, and that's where Slim has arrived. She's not going to take it from Mitch anymore, whatever she has to do. I really like how she turns the table on him," she says. "And my character supports her in making that journey."
Lewis was particularly drawn to the script's depiction of a woman who pushes beyond the paralyzing emotions of fear and sadness into bold action. "You really are made to feel the hell Slim goes through and then you come out of it rooting for her to win," she says. " I found it not only exciting but very uplifting and empowering."
Enough began in a white heat, when screenwriter Nicholas Kazan first came up with the idea of writing a thriller that would create a different kind of heroine: an everyday wife and mother, no different from most, pushed to extraordinary physical and emotional extremes in defense of her life. Unlike many of his projects - which include the Academy Award nominated screenplay for "Reversal of Fortune," based on the real-life trial of Klaus Von Bulow -- Kazan wrote the entire page-turning screenplay almost entirely in one go, taking mere weeks to complete it.
When producers Irwin Winkler and Rob Cowan got their hands on the screenplay, it was clear that it was a perfect match for their company, which seeks diverse stories that center around their favorite theme: human triumph over adversity. They saw Enough as an inspiring tale of survival wrapped in the heart-pounding suspense of a stylish psychological thriller.
"Ordinary women so rarely get to be heroes on the screen and we felt this script was a rarity - an exciting, entertaining thriller that tells the story of a woman fighting to get her life back," says Rob Cowan. "I think what most intrigues us is when you can take a character and strip away everything that they've got and then see how they perform and what they are really made of - and Jennifer Lopez as Slim is that kind of woman."
From the beginning, Cowan and Winkler had a single director in mind for the project: Michael Apted, the acclaimed documentarian and feature film director whose work has encompassed everything from the pure action thrills of the James Bond blockbuster, "The World is Not Enough" to the award-winning drama of "Coal Miner's Daughter" and "Gorillas in the Mist."
"We wanted someone who would bring something fresh to the thriller aspects of the story but at the same time would bring an awareness of the social issues at the center of it. Michael was ideal for this," says Cowan. "He's done the Bond movie, so he obviously knows how to handle the thrills and chills of chases and action scenes. But he's also achieved some amazing dramatic performances from lead actresses and his documentary background was interesting because of the gritty, real-life issues involved. We felt he was the perfect choice."
Once the script began circulating in Hollywood, it also began to draw interest from a wide range of actors. Noah Wyle sums up the script's broad appeal: "Here was a story that was timely and urgent, about a woman coming to terms with her own sense of anger and creating her own sense of justice. With Jennifer Lopez in the lead role, it was a strong attraction."
With cast and crew assembled, Enough began filming on extensive locations throughout Southern California with the company moving from the streets of downtown Los Angeles to the yacht basin of Marina Del Rey where Lopez and Lewis sling hamburgers in a diner. Filming also took place on a Santa Monica beach, in the sprawling backyard of a stately San Marino estate for the elaborate wedding of Lopez and Campbell, over several evenings at a rundown Hollywood Boulevard motel, in a busy LAX Airport terminal, and in the picturesque neighborhoods of Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Pasadena and the upper valley community of Fillmore.
Production then journeyed north to Seattle for scenes in Port Townsend, an historic Victorian seaside town at the north end of the Olympic Peninsula, and the quaint waterfront village of Gig Harbor with its postcard-perfect view of Mount Rainer. It was in Port Townsend's Fort Worden where Lopez was filmed training in the martial art of Krav Maga.
Filming also took place at two of Seattle's most famous and familiar landmarks: the Space Needle, soaring 600 feet high with a 360-degree view of the city and surrounding mountains; and the year-old Experience Music Project, a uniquely designed Frank Gehry -designed facility honoring rock music greats and their memorabilia. The final two days of filming were completed in San Francisco on landmark Pier 7 with its spectacular city view and reverse look across the Golden Gate-Bay Bridge; in mid-town Columbus Street traffic and on the picturesque hilltop steps atop Kearny Street.
Everyone in the cast and crew eagerly awaited the final sequences, in which all of Slim's strategizing, training, and search for answers explode into pure action. Michael Apted worked closely with Simon Crane and acclaimed cinematographer Rogier Stoffers ("Character," "Quills") to choreograph a visceral, realistic and suspense-laden combat sequence that turns the hunted woman into a powerful huntress.
"The clash between Jennifer and Billy was very difficult to design because Michael wanted it to feel absolutely realistic and authentic," explains Crane. "He wanted it to be so you could feel each kick and punch. It couldn't be a graceful 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' type fight which would be totally out of character. Instead, we worked very careful to use the character's personalities in planning out the action of the fight scene. Everything was designed to make it true-to life."
He adds: "In this final sequence, Jennifer's character goes into very dangerous territory and we wanted the audience to feel everything that she goes through, to understand the desperation of her dilemma, the depth of her commitment and her ultimate choice."

Juliette Lewis, who plays 'Ginny,' Slim's fellow waitress and loyal friend in Enough, is one of the most captivating performers of her generation. Bringing an emotional rawness and authenticity to every one of her film roles, she has proven her ability to embody a broad spectrum of characters.
It was in l991 that the actress amazed audiences and critics alike for her riveting work in Martin Scorsese's remake of "Cape Fear," co-starring Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange. Her performance earned both Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress. She next joined the cast of the Woody Allen comedy "Husbands and Wives," in which she played a college student with a penchant for older men, followed by "That Night," co-starring C. Thomas Howell.

Fred Ward, who plays Slim's father Jupiter, is one of Hollywood's most successful character leads and supporting players. Ward was in fact given his first big Hollywood role by Enough producer Irwin Winkler as doomed astronaut Gus Grissom in "The Right Stuff" and previously worked with Michael Apted in "Thunderheart." Most recently Ward has been seen in such hit comedies as "Road Trip" and "Summer Catch."
Ward began his film career in a plum role as partner to Clint Eastwood in "Escape From Alcatraz." His other credits include "Naked Gun 33 1/3:The Final Insult," "Miami Blues," the critically acclaimed "Henry and June," "Swing Shift," "Silkwood" and "The Player."

IRWIN WINKLER (Producer)
In a career as celebrated as it is accomplished, Irwin Winkler's films have amassed 12 Academy Awards from 45 nominations including four Best Picture nominations - a remarkable record which stands alone in contemporary Hollywood. Winkler is also the only producer to have three of his films listed on the American Film Institute list of the "top 100 films" of all time. Winkler made his directorial debut in l989 with "Guilty By Suspicion," a drama he also wrote, starring Robert De Niro, Annette Benning, Patricia Wettig and Martin Scorsese. His second feature as director, "Night and the City," based on Jules Dassin's '50s noir film, reunited him with De Niro (their seventh film together) and also starred Jessica Lange (Oscar nominated for her role in the Winkler-produced "Music Box"). Winkler also directed and produced the suspense thrillers "The Net" with Sandra Bullock and "At First Sight" with Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino.
Winkler began his producing career in l967 with legendary director Norman Taurog at MGM with the Elvis Presley starrer "Double Trouble" and followed with the classic film noir "Point Blank" starring Lee Marvin. He then won acclaim for "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?," which garnered nine Academy Award nominations.

He also became the first producer to be honored with a retrospective of his films at the American Film Festival in Deauville and has also received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Palm Springs Film Festival and the Flanders International Film Festival.
A year 2000 salute came to Winkler when a star with his name was added to the famous Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard in front of the new Kodak Theatre.
ROB COWAN (Producer)
Rob Cowan, who serves as President of Winkler films, joins again with Irwin Winkler as producer of Enough. The two most recently produced "Life as a House" starring Kevin Kline and Kristen Scott Thomas.
Cowan began his long collaboration with Winkler when he served as assistant director on Winkler's directorial debut, "Guilty by Suspicion" and the Winkler produced features "Betrayed" and "Music Box." Their strong working relationship led to Cowan coming to Winkler Films on a permanent basis as an executive and producer.
