Synopsis
Joe Blake (Bruce Willis) and Terry Collins (Billy Bob Thornton) are bank robbers, fugitives hoping a final string of scores will finance their South-of-the-Border retirement dream. Irresistible Joe and his hypochondriac partner Terry become "The Sleepover Bandits," the most famous thieves in the country, cutting a swath from Oregon through California and leaving terrified bankers, bad disguises, and an adoring public in their wake.
Their gimmick: Take the bank manager and his family hostage the night before a heist, have dinner and sleep over, then go into the bank with him in the morning before business hours. No break-in necessary. No complicated surprise midday raid. It works like a charm.
Things get more complicated when they meet Kate Wheeler (Cate Blanchett), an ordinary housewife sick of her disappointing life -- who happens to run into Terry with her car. Kate joins the bandits on their cross-country spree, and eventually she steals something, too -- their hearts. Both guys fall in love with Kate, and Kate starts to feel it, too. Joe and Terry are far from ideal on their own, but together they make up the perfect man...
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, in association with Hyde Park Entertainment, presents Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Cate Blanchett in Academy AwardR-winner Barry Levinson's sophisticated comedy BANDITS, an Empire Pictures, Lotus Pictures, Baltimore/ Spring Creek Pictures, and Cheyenne Enterprises production. Cast
BRUCE WILLIS (Joe Blake) has demonstrated incredible versatility in his career. From playing the ultimate action hero in the popular "Die Hard" films to his critically-acclaimed performances in recent movies like "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable," Willis has carved a niche for himself as one of the world's most talented and bankable box office superstars.
Raised in a working-class family in New Jersey, Willis attended Montclair State College because of its highly regarded theater department. After numerous auditions, he landed a role in the play "Heaven and Earth" in 1977, which was incentive enough for him to quit school and move to Hell's Kitchen to pursue an acting career.
Soon he was cast in off-Broadway plays and television commercials, while occasionally playing his harmonica and sitting in rhythm and blues bands. His acting breakthrough came in 1984 when he replaced the lead in Sam Shepard's hit play "Fool for Love," a run which lasted for 100 performances off-Broadway.
Later that year while on a trip to Los Angeles, Willis was selected from 3,000 contenders to star as David Addison in the phenomenally popular television series Moonlighting, for which he would win an Emmy and Golden Globe Award and ultimately become an international star.
In 1986, his continued pursuit of the love of music resulted in the release of an album for Motown Records entitled "Bruce Willis: The Return of Bruno," which eventually went platinum, hanging on the charts for over 29 weeks. His remake of the single, "Respect Yourself" landed at an impressive number five on the charts. In 1989, he released his second album, "If It Don't Kill You, It Just Makes you Stronger," also for Motown.
Willis made his feature film debut opposite Kim Basinger in the Blake Edwards comedy Blind Date. He then reunited with the director to play Tom Mix in the murder mystery Sunset before going on to star in the blockbuster motion picture Die Hard, one of the highest-grossing films of 1988.
The following year, Willis took a dramatic turn by portraying a Vietnam War veteran haunted by combat memories in Norman Jewison's In Country. Returning to comedy, Willis provided the voice of Mikey, the wise-cracking baby in the highly successful Look Who's Talking and its sequel, Look Who's Talking, Too.
In 1990, Willis starred in Die Hard 2: Die Harder, the number two box office hit of the summer, then starred in Brian De Palma's Bonfire of the Vanities opposite Tom Hanks. He went on to star opposite Demi Moore and Glenne Headley in the disturbing psychological drama Mortal Thoughts, as a cat burglar extraordinaire in the action-adventure comedy Hudson Hawk, and as gangster Bo Weinberg in Billy Bathgate.
Willis followed these roles with The Last Boy Scout, playing a down-on-his-luck private detective who teams up with an ex-football player to solve a murder. He then starred in the number one box-office hit Striking Distance playing a river patrol cop, and was also featured in the bittersweet tale North for Castlerock Pictures. He then had the starring role in the erotic thriller Color of Night.
Willis then co-starred to great acclaim in the Quentin Tarantino drama Pulp Fiction, which was the 1994 Grand Prize winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He was also lauded for his turn in Nobody's Fool co-starring Paul Newman, starred in the box office hit Die Hard 3, and was seen in Four Rooms. He starred in the hit motion picture Twelve Monkeys for director Terry Gilliam, in Last Man Standing for director Walter Hill, and in The Fifth Element for director Luc Besson. He also starred in The Jackal and Mercury Rising.
Along with Billy Bob Thornton, Willis starred in the action-adventure blockbuster Armageddon produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. He also made the low-budget film Breakfast of Champions for director Alan Rudolph, based on the best-selling novel by Kurt Vonnegut, and served as executive producer on the film.
Recently, Willis starred in the critically-acclaimed feature film drama The Sixth Sense, which grossed close to six hundred million dollars worldwide and was nominated for six Academy AwardsR. Willis won Best Actor from the People's Choice Awards for the film. He co-starred with Michelle Pfeiffer in The Story of Us directed by Rob Reiner, produced and starred in the black comedy The Whole Nine Yards opposite Matthew Perry, Michael Clarke Duncan and Amanda Peet, and was seen in the hit film Disney's The Kid. Last year, Willis reunited with The Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan to star with Robin Wright-Penn and Samuel L. Jackson in Unbreakable.
Willis will next be seen starring opposite Colin Farrell in MGM's thrilling wartime drama Hart's War.

Director
BARRY LEVINSON (Director/Producer), an Academy AwardR-winning director, screenwriter, and producer, has crafted an enviable reputation in the film industry as a director who blends literate and intelligent visions into films.
Levinson was awarded the 1988 Best Director OscarR for the multiple award-winning Rain Man, starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. In 1987, he directed Robin Williams in the comedy Good Morning, Vietnam, which went on to become one of the year's most acclaimed and popular movies. In 1991, Bugsy, directed and produced by Levinson, was nominated for ten Academy AwardsR, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Levinson has used his hometown as the setting for four widely praised features: Diner, the semi-autobiographical comedy-drama that marked his directorial debut; Tin Men, starring Danny DeVito and Richard Dreyfuss as warring aluminum siding salesmen; Avalon, in which his native city takes center stage through the recollections of an immigrant family; and Liberty Heights, a humorous, touching drama that captures the spirit of change in Baltimore circa 1954, addressing issues of race, class, and religion.
After attending American University in Washington, DC, Levinson moved to Los Angeles, where he began acting as well as writing and performing comedy routines. He then went on to write several television variety shows, including The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine (which originated in England), The Lohman and Barkley Show, The Tim Conway Show, and The Carol Burnett Show. A meeting with Mel Brooks led Levinson to collaborate with the veteran comedian on the features Silent Movie and High Anxiety, the latter additionally notable for his acting debut.
As a screenwriter, Levinson has received three Academy Award nominations, for ...And Justice for All, Diner, and Avalon. Levinson's other directorial credits include The Natural, Young Sherlock Holmes, Toys, Jimmy Hollywood, Disclosure, Sleepers, Sphere, and Wag the Dog.
Barry returned to Baltimore to film the Homicide: Life on the Street television series. His work on this critically acclaimed drama earned him an Emmy for Best Individual Director of a Drama Series. The series has also received two Peabody Awards, two Writers Guild Awards, and an Excellence in Quality Television Founders Award for the 1994 and 1995 seasons. In 1996, the series won the Nancy Susan Reynolds Award for outstanding portrayal of sexual responsibility in a dramatic series as well as PRISM Commendation. In 1998, the series garnered a TCA Award for program of the year and drama of the year.
Barry's feature Sleepers (1996), a film based on the best-selling book by Lorenzo Carcaterra and starring Robert DeNiro, Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, Kevin Bacon, and Dustin Hoffman, garnered critical acclaim and box office success. The close of 1997 saw Barry at his most prolific, releasing two films nearly back to back: Wag the Dog and Sphere. Wag the Dog, a political satire written by Hilary Henkin and David Mamet, was nominated for two Academy Awards. Sphere (1998), a science-fiction film adapted from the Michael Crichton novel, starred Sharon Stone and Samuel L. Jackson, and marked Levinson's fourth collaboration with Dustin Hoffman.
Until 1998, Levinson produced films through his production company, Baltimore Pictures, Inc. Critically acclaimed releases include Quiz Show, Donnie Brasco, and The Second Civil War (HBO). At the beginning of 1998, Levinson partnered with Paula Weinstein, forming Baltimore/Spring Creek Pictures. Together they produced Analyze This (1999), a comedy starring Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal which opened to instant box office success, as well as The Perfect Storm and An Everlasting Piece. Barry became one of Variety's "Billion Dollar Directors," as well as ShoWest's "Director of the Year," in 1998.
Barry was honored in February 1999 with a Creative Achievement Award at the 13th Annual American Comedy Awards. In May 1999, the American University of Washington, DC, conferred upon Levinson the degree of Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa, for his distinguished work in the field of communications and his defining impact on the motion picture and television industry. Barry was honored for his commitment to the craft of filmmaking, his dedication to telling insightful stories, his exquisite sensitivity to the details of life as we live it, and his gifts and accomplishments as a director.
