AUSTIN POWERS in GOLDMEMBER
Production Information

He's back, baby! It's been three years since Austin Powers, that swinging international man of mystery, has faced his archenemy, Dr. Evil. But after Dr. Evil and his accomplice Mini-Me escape from a maximum-security prison, Austin is called to action once more in this third installment of the highly successful "Austin Powers" movie franchise. Teaming up with the mysterious Goldmember, Dr. Evil hatches a time-traveling scheme to take over the world, one that involves the kidnapping of Nigel Powers, Austin's beloved father and England's most renowned spy. As he chases the villains through time, Austin visits 1975 and joins forces with his old flame, Foxxy Cleopatra, a streetwise but stylish detective. Together Austin and Foxxy must find a way to save Nigel and stop Dr. Evil and Goldmember from their mischievous mayhem.

Mike Myers once again takes on multiple roles, portraying Austin Powers, Dr. Evil and Fat Bastard, as well as his newest character, Goldmember. Joining the cast are Sir Michael Caine as Nigel Powers, singing sensation Beyonce Knowles (of the multi-platinum group Destiny's Child) as Foxxy Cleopatra and Fred Savage as Number Three a.k.a., The Mole. Returning are series veterans Michael York, Robert Wagner, Seth Green, Mindy Sterling and Verne J. Troyer. The film also introduces newcomers Aaron Himelstein and Josh Zuckerman.

New Line Cinema presents "Austin Powers in Goldmember," directed by Jay Roach and written by Mike Myers and Michael McCullers. The film is produced by Mike Myers, John Lyons and Eric McLeod, along with co-producer Gregg Taylor.

Joining the production team are director of photography Peter Deming, production designer Rusty Smith, costume designer Deena Appel, editors Jon Poll and Greg Hayden, music supervisor John Houlihan, stunt coordinator Jack Gill and choreographer Marguerite Derricks.

Although the filmmakers never envisioned the "Austin Powers" franchise as a trilogy, after the success of the first two films, fan enthusiasm demanded they come up with a third installment of the series.

"I was blown away when the first two films found the audience they did," says writer, producer and actor Mike Myers. "The only reason we decided to do a third one was to honor the fact that people followed us through one and two. "We wrote it from a backwards approach and explained the origins of the worlds of Austin and Dr. Evil. It was strangely easy to connect all the stories. It was screen writing meets Mad Libs."

Myers was not interested in making a third film just for the sake of making another "Austin Powers" movie; he was insistent that the premise be fresh and interesting enough to stand on its own. Once he had developed a concrete concept, he and co-writer Michael McMullers began writing a first draft in March of 2001.

"Mike always said he wouldn't do another movie unless he had a really good idea," notes producer John Lyons, who also produced the second film in 1998. "He is committed to the material and believes he has a contract with the audience. He feels the audience comes with expectations and that it would be cynical to believe they'll see the movie simply because they liked the first two films. All of us want people to feel this one is bigger, better and funnier than the last two.

"That was the real challenge," he adds. "Upping the stakes and still remaining true to the loose, easy sensibility of the first two films. Mike has the ability to seize the moment and be silly and celebratory; he knows how to take a grab bag of pop culture moments and funnel them down to what is essential and funny. The story feels grounded in whatever era he writes about, but it's not nostalgic, his ideas are completely contemporary and cutting edge."

"The first movie was extraordinarily charming and the second one was wall to wall comedy," says co-producer Gregg Taylor. "In this third movie we've tried to achieve both; it's comedy that's extremely heartfelt."

"The franchise works because it's so unusual," says director Jay Roach. "It's so bizarre and weird, it took people by surprise at first. On top of that, Austin's character is completely infectious. We asked the audience to assume with us that Austin has always been this happy person and that whatever he does, he will always come out of any dilemma up and affirmed by his experience even it's the biggest disaster ever. Austin Powers is the Bugs Bunny of spy movies.

"It just has a certain spirit," he says. "We tried to get all the other characters to take on that same assumption and cheer for Austin. Everywhere he goes, women want him and men are intimidated by him. We say, 'Hey, this is the mythology. Go with it!' even if it is an acquired taste. But we didn't want there to be any required reading for this third film; each one was designed to stand on its own.

"How the films got into the mainstream does mystify me a little," the director admits. "We just never imagined people going around repeating catch phrases over and over or taking on the vibe of Austin Powers, but that became a tremendous part of the word-of-mouth success. It's really all about Mike's contagious energy and contagious language -- that's the best explanation."

It's the most memorable day of Austin Powers' life when he is knighted by the Queen. His pride and joy are only compounded by the fact that the father Austin has worshiped since childhood is in attendance to witness the honor. But alas, when Austin turns to introduce Nigel to Her Majesty and the assembled guests, the original International Man of Mystery and the most famous of British intelligence officers is nowhere to be found. Austin is devastated. Once again his hero has let him down. But just when Austin is at his lowest, Basil Exposition informs him that Nigel has been kidnapped by a criminal mastermind…uh, well maybe not a mastermind, but certainly a devious villain…named Goldmember.

With no clear leads to his father's whereabouts, Austin turns to an unlikely source for help. He is forced to make a devil's pact with Dr. Evil who is incarcerated in a super-max prison and will only point Austin in the right direction if the super sleuth makes arrangements for Dr. Evil to be transferred to a less secure facility where Mini Me has been jailed.

No sooner has Austin taken off to find his father in 1975 than Dr. Evil and Mini Me escape from prison. By the time Austin travels back in time and meets his old partner Foxxy Cleopatra working undercover in Goldmember's roller disco nightclub, his longtime nemesis is already hot on his trail. Dr. Evil forges an alliance with Goldmember and together they initiate "Preparation H," the ultimate plan to stop Austin and destroy the world. But little do any of them know that Austin's encounter with Dr. Evil will stir up more than the usual animosity between the two; secrets will be exposed, hidden truths will come to the fore, and the raison d'etre for the compulsive conflict between these arch enemies will be revealed.

"Austin is defined by serially chasing Dr. Evil," explains Myers. "Not to sound melodramatic, but in this movie we play out the ritual of people who define themselves through the feelings they have for an enemy. This story explores people's fears and hopes, their wishes and struggles, ideals and goals. It's not going to teach anybody anything, but comedy happens to be an idiom I enjoy, so we use humor to convey that philosophy."

In writing the story for "Austin Powers in Goldmember," Myers adhered to his overall belief in comedy as the most palatable form of communication. "Broad comedy is as legitimate and valid a delivery system for expansive, spiritual ideas as any other art form. It's the Flinstones vitamins approach to those ideas; we should eat Dino and Barney and not know it's good for us."

As Jay Roach is fond of saying, "We do it all with a wink and a nod."

"We thought it would be cool if Austin were in the legacy phase of his career," Myers says. "He's at his pinnacle, knighted by the Queen and still his father gives him no respect. From the perspective of story, we stack the deck when it comes to what is missing before his dad will give it up. The reason Austin became a spy is because Nigel was Britain's most decorated and celebrated spy. Austin's spent his whole life trying to get his father's approval. On the flamboyant scale Nigel is about an eight, so Austin has to be a ten. He's always trying to get his father's attention, and when Nigel gets kidnapped by Goldmember and taken back to the '70s, Austin has to rescue him. When Austin eventually sees his father, he realizes that Nigel is hornier than he is and that he's kind of a pain in the ass and always wants to run the show. Nigel has no respect for Austin and all of Austin's childhood pain comes flooding back, and he has to cope with that."

"This movie is really about one person finding his own self worth rather than turning to a parent to gain approval," concludes Taylor.

"It's pretty bold to ask the audience to accept the fact that Austin has always had father issues," says Roach. "But that's part of the pretense that all three films were meant to work in unison weaving the tapestry of a big-time trilogy. Austin is who he is because he overcompensates for not living up to his father's expectations."

Part of upping the ante on this third film was Mike Myers' commitment to add yet another outrageous character to his resume, which meant he must portray four very different roles, a task most actors would find daunting. Once again he appears as Austin Powers, Dr. Evil and Fat Bastard, as well as the newest member of the evil ensemble, Goldmember. Never apprehensive about taking on so many personalities in one film, Myers admits the obligation did present a significant challenge. "Two characters is twice as difficult as one, three is ten times as hard and four is 50 times worse. I'm a nerd, so I have those numbers right at my fingertips," he laughs.

Myers' deep affection for Austin is unmistakable, evidenced in the character's constant, infectious optimism, but it is equally apparent how much enjoyment he derives from taking on the Dr. Evil persona. Even Myers' bad guy possesses a captivating, contagious spirit; no diabolical scheme is too wacky, no set back too discouraging not to try taking over the world yet again.

Dr. Evil is Jay Roach's favorite character. "I love the twisted surrealism of the B-movie bad guy who wants to get it right but nothing works exactly as planned, the guy whose underlings don't just instantly respect him as much as they are supposed to," he says. "I think people enjoy the weird ironies of Dr. Evil.

"He could become a kind of Homer Simpson," Roach continues. "Certainly his family dynamic is compelling enough to have room for many more stories. The love triangle with Mini Me and Seth is almost Shakespearean or Coppolaesque; it has a 'Godfather' aspect to it."

"Goldmember is a character from the post-sexual liberation/pre-AIDS years where people were sexual in such an uninhibited, crazy way that a mythology has developed out of that sexuality," says Roach.

Goldmember's primary interest is gold. He loves gold and plans to reroute the path of a meteor comprised of solid gold for a direct collision course with Earth, creating tidal waves and earthquakes, effectively destroying everything in its wake. Austin, Foxxy and Nigel must work together to foil Goldmember's dastardly scheme and save mankind. Despite the enormity of the looming danger, Austin and Nigel face a long-awaited contretemps of their own.

There was never a question of whom should play Nigel Powers -- everyone agreed; who better than Sir Michael Caine, the legendary actor whose early work as "Harry Palmer," in a series of popular British thrillers released in the 60s, was one of the many reference materials Myers and Roach studied in creating the original "Austin Powers."

"Michael Caine was always part of the heritage of the film," says Roach. "It was perfect for Michael to be Austin's father, it was completely organic, a sort of poetic justice that took us all by surprise. He's just ideal. When he and Mike were on set together, they were like twins and I would think, 'How come we didn't do this before?'

"Nigel Powers is even more Austin than Austin," describes the director. "He's like Dean Martin meets Englebert Humperdink with a little Tom Jones and Sean Connery thrown in -- he's like an English Hugh Hefner, and Austin is a chip off the old block. Nigel has the same teeth, the same glasses, and even though we don't see him with his shirt off, you just know there's a full chest of hair under there. When you watch Nigel and Austin together, it's a little mind-warping," he laughs.

Before being asked to join the cast, Caine had admired both of the previous "Austin Powers" films. "I thought they were very funny," says Caine. "Mike caught the essence of that period; they are a great send-up. When I first saw Austin with the glasses and realized he was a spy, it reminded me of me -- it was very funny. He caught the atmosphere, the design, the dress, everything about the '60s."

When Austin attempts to rescue his father from the clutches of Goldmember and Dr. Evil, he brings along a former associate, the beautiful Foxxy Cleopatra. Years earlier Foxxy was Austin Powers' partner both professionally and personally. She was the last girl he dated before being cryogenically frozen in 1967 while pursuing Dr. Evil.

"When Austin shows up in 1975, eight years after he's stood her up, Foxxy is mad," explains Myers. "Eight years and no phone call. Nobody stands up Foxxy Cleopatra."

The filmmakers found the perfect fox in the lead member of the multi-platinum, multi-award-winning musical group, Destiny's Child; once they met Beyonce Knowles, there was no doubt she was the real-life personification of their character.

"One of the most exciting elements in this movie is Beyonce," declares Lyons.

"She is the real deal," agrees Roach. "This young woman is a movie star and nobody knows that quite yet, but they soon will. It's exciting when you work with someone you know is about to launch the biggest career. She is absolutely a movie star; she is hilarious, she can sing and dance, she can handle drama and has an emotional sweep, even in a comedy like this. She can manage giant production numbers and big broad comedy, but she has some beautiful, subtle performances where she just reacts.

Writer Michael McCullers (who wrote the recently released "Undercover Brother," starring Eddie Griffin) and Myers are particularly fond of '70s Blaxploitation films and decided to incorporate many of the genre's signature characteristics into "Austin Powers in Goldmember."

"One aspect of the Blaxploitation genre is the partner on a vendetta mission," explains Myers. "Whether the character is a cop inside the law or used to be a cop, or whether it's someone working outside the law or even in a special branch of the FBI that's always left vague and indeterminate, they're always trying to get the bad guy in the neighborhood who's selling drugs or weapons or whatever. I think it was Cleopatra Jones who worked for the Office of the President of the United States, and who knows what that is, but she had a badge that said 'Office of the President of the United States," he laughs. "Foxxy was a composite of women like that -- strong, cool female leads.

"We hope Scott, Frau, Mini Me, Number Two, Basil and even Fat Bastard, are welcomed back as if they're family or a dear friend," Roach says. "We want audiences to feel there's something they can rely on in the world of Austin Powers, but like any good variety show, some unimaginable things have to happen and new faces have to surface that add an element of surprise.

"It's like a rock band doing a concert on their latest tour," says Roach to further illustrate his point. "The band has to play some of their greatest hits because the audience comes expecting to hear familiar tunes, and hopefully the songs are going to sound better than ever. But they are also coming to hear a couple of totally new pieces, which makes the experience rare and unique."

The filmmakers decided to shake things up, breaking the mold of the spy movie by delving further into the personal stories of their characters. If the adage is true that the best comedy originates from what is familiar and real, audiences will surely recognize their own family dynamic played out before them, albeit within a more bizarre set of circumstances.

"Everybody's character advances a bit from the last movie," Myers says. "For example, Scott still hates Mini Me, Mini Me still hates Scott, but the battle takes on a different dimension and reaches new levels of torture."

"It's difficult to discuss what happens with Mini Me because the transition he goes through is pretty significant," says actor Verne Troyer. "He changes both emotionally and physically, but that's not to say that he's the only one who's transformed in one way or another during the course of the movie."

Troyer continues, "I think the fact that Mini Me doesn't talk, and can only express himself with physical gestures makes more of an impact than if he said, in words, that he's feeling rejected or sad or upset. The audience is never confused about Mini Me, everything is right there on his face."

"Every character's make up is a little over the top," Burke says. "It's akin to what you'd do for a stage show or a pantomime performance piece. We used a lot of glitter and lashes with splashes of color, a cross between Mary Quant and Twiggy. Even Frau looks very groovy now. Her looks constantly evolve -- she starts out very tarted up and then the next time you see her she is quite chic, almost a bit too slick, and then she changes to a more severe, military look. Scott Evil will also surprise the audience. He looks quite different from the beginning of the film to the end, which was fun for Seth. Of course, the look for each character was determined long ago, but we were diligent about doing whatever we could to freshen and refine Austin and Dr. Evil."

Defining the look for Goldmember became a process of elimination rather than an exercise in creativity. "Because I play three other characters, we tried to move in a different direction," Myers says. "Dr. Evil is bald, Austin has a full head of hair and Fat Bastard has red hair, so we went blond and thinning with hair plugs. All of the characters are fair, so I thought about his having some skin damage and then Gregg Taylor came up with the idea that he eats his peeling skin. We gave him a bigger chin and green eyes because the others have blue or brown eyes. Goldmember's look really emerged out of necessity; it was definitely a process of subtraction."

"Foxxy wears the hottest outfits I've seen in a long time," says Knowles of her character's ensemble. "I've always admired the clothes my Mom wore in the '70s. They were crazy with all the leather and fringe, the colors and wild patterns, the big platform shoes and the big earrings. Foxxy's style is even a little more exaggerated. My fantasy is to be one of those sassy ladies like Foxxy. She's smart and strong and can take care of herself but she's still sexy and feminine. The cool clothes make the character. I really love Deena's designs."

As Goldmember, Mike had to perform as the perfect roller boogie guy and then as Austin he had to be klutzy, which is much harder because you have to control yourself being out of control."

"We originally thought about doing more of an action film," Roach explains. "But aspects of 'Austin Powers' have always been musical, and we decided to go in that direction instead. I kept telling everyone what a good dancer Mike is -- he can tap, he can do swing, he'll try anything, and it's completely different from what other comedians are doing these days. I would love to do 'Austin Powers, The Musical' on Broadway!"

Music takes center stage in "Austin Powers in Goldmember." For music supervisor John Houlihan, who has worked on all three films, it has been a wild ride and one of the more rewarding experiences in his career.

"Music is always the last element to go into the final film," explains Houlihan. "But it's also one of the most important because it can dramatically alter the texture of a scene. What's so great about working with Jay and Mike and John is that they are all incredibly knowledgeable about music and interested in music. Mike is a very good musician, too.

Of course, no spy movie would be complete without a couple of thrilling chase scenes followed by several heart-pounding action sequences.

Renowned stunt coordinator Jack Gill not only coordinated the movie's many stunt sequences, he also acted as the second unit director, designing the spectacular opening scene of the film in which world-class skydivers Eli Thompson and Fritz Pfnur actually jumped from a helicopter, parachuting into a moving convertible Jaguar XK8 maneuvered by a hidden stunt driver.
